1920s Vintage Lakefront Cottage Private Sandy Beach on Newfound Lake

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

This is our family cottage and in our family for 63 years on the water's edge and private sandy beach on crystal clear Newfound Lake in Hebron NH. It is a vintage 'cottage' and certainly could use some work but it has everything for a great family vacation. It is rustic in with 100’ of frontage on Newfound Lake. There is a private beach and sitting area with a deck and an excellent location for swimming, sand castle building, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. There are two sea kayaks, life jackets, paddles, canoe, sand chairs, chaise lounge, inflatable tubes/toys and inflatable boat. There is a waterfront deck that overlooks the sandy swim area which is an excellent place for small children with a gradual slope on the beach and a very protected cove. Imagine the lake views, mountain views, private sandy beach, evening campfires, tiki torches, moon beams across the lake and ducks and loons swimming by, the outdoor living just does not get any better than this.

Back in Time lodging with wireless technology: This is a vintage 'cottage' and certainly could use a lot work, but it has everything for a great family vacation. It is a rustic summer camp with 100’ of frontage on Newfound Lake much the same as it was 63 years ago except for the technology. It is a beautiful place to be on a warm summer day but also a great getaway in the off season with very quiet kayak paddles and warm evening campfires by the lake. This is a seasonal cottage and there is no central heating but there is a Vermont casting woodstove to warm up on Fall and Spring nights.

Nightlife : In the evening, light the tiki torches and sit deck side with cocktails, enjoy a bonfire lakeside, make smores and listen to the loons. The calling of the loons is a beautiful sound in the evenings. years. The Lake views, the mountain views, the private sandy beach, the evening campfires, moon beams across the lake and the ducks and loons swimming by, the outdoor living just does not get any better than this.

Private not shared beach : The sandy beach and sitting area with a deck and an excellent location for fishing, canoeing, kayaking. There are two sea kayaks, life jackets, paddles, a canoe, sand chairs, beach chaise lounges, inflatable tubes/toys and inflatable boat all available. The crystal clear water provides an excellent swimming with easy sandy bottom walk out beach. There is a waterfront deck that overlooks the beach and swim area. An excellent place for a great family vacation and especially wonderful for small children with a gradual slope on the beach and a very protected cove. Bring the sand and beach toys and they will not want to do anything else. The beach area varies in size according to the lake levels. Late summer traditionally has more beach area and early season has less beach with higher lake levels.

There is a swim raft moored deep for you to enjoy. I also allow neighbors to use the raft.

What makes this cabin unique

Please remember it is a camp. If your worried how "campy or rustic" it is, then it might not be for you. But if you want relaxing and someplace you don't have to worry or fuss about, then it might be just what you are looking for.

•It is not set up like a typical rental. It has been in the family for a long time. Therefore it is filled with non valuable personal items and food items in kitchen and refrigerator. You are welcome to use the cabin like you are family and the food items such as spices, flour, sugar, and condiments.

•All the floats, kayaks, canoes, paddles and adult life vests are available for you to use. A quiet morning or evening kayak paddle is something you must do! Please supply your own children's life vests. There is a catamaran on the property. We ask that you do not use it or allow your children to play on it.

•You must bring your own beach towels. Limited bath towels and bedding will be for your use but there is no washer or dryer except a Laundromat in Bristol (8 miles). I will do laundry upon your departure. If you use a lot of towels and pillows, you should bring your own.

•This is a private family cabin and is set up to use as if you were a family member. There is no housekeeping. We expect you to return the house in the condition you found it. There is no cleaning fee but there is a security deposit fully refundable if it is left clean and without damage. A reasonable amount of laundry may be left.

•The hot water shower is only located outside and there is no shower inside. There is a claw foot bath tub but we request very limited use.

•The beach area varies over the summer according to weather and lake level. Traditionally it is least amount of beach in early summer but this will vary according to weather factors.

•PERSONAL BOATS and OFF ROAD VEHICLES, ATVs, SNOW MOBILES and MOTORCYCLES are ONLY allowed with prior approval and a signed addendum listing such boats or vehicle.

The simple life is the good life!

Wonderful long weekend family retreat at the rustic vintage lake house! Weather turned a bit chilly but the wood stove kept us cozy. We played games, read, cooked, napped and just "looked" for hours at the beautiful lake, watching ducks and breathing in the crisp Autumn air. Cottage was clean and well stocked with cooking necessities. We stayed in all weekend and cooked all our meals there. Our family really needed this peaceful break. The vintage cottage had everything we needed. We really didn't want to leave. We look forward to returning again next year. Thank you for sharing this special place with us.

When I rented this property, I figured that the “rustic” would be a tradeoff for the “rural and private”.

This property is not private, not rural, not peaceful, and not quiet, despite what the owner’s narrative and carefully angled & cropped pictures would lead you to believe.

This property is in a densely populated lakefront area with multiple properties packed close to this property with people/children who have no qualms about hanging out and using the lake access directly in front of this cabin. Your enjoyment is entirely up to fate and the politeness, quietness of the neighbors.

This is not a quiet part of the lake with loud motor boats passing very frequently. Our canoe almost tipped several times due to constant wake.

We did not use the outdoor lawn space at this cabin as it was not relaxing for us to be outside- think hanging out on a school playground at recess from 6am until after dusk.

The cabin is grungy, dusty, and very cluttered. There are a lot of spiders and spider webs.

To access the only and outdoor shower you must walk across the driveway and past the neighbor’s overlooking deck - I would liken the experience to camping in a suburban neighborhood where your neighbors can easily see you walking around in your towel and bathrobe.

Huge disappointment that I traded modern conveniences and comfort only to find congested lakefront and constant noise from every angle.

For the amount I paid, I feel that I was robbed blind. I’ve spent a third of this amount to stay in superior lakefront properties in New England.

When I brought my concerns to the owner- I was completely ignored- no response, no concern.

I was required to sign a contract, very unusual, in order to do a 5 day short term rental. The owner’s contract focused solely on removing the owner’s liability for accidents or harm to the renters. I think this is telling of the condition of this property.

I write this review because I dearly value my vacation time and when people are not honest about a property’s conditions and assets, not only do you waste your money, but your precious time which is more valuable. I offer this review to prevent unhappiness for future renters and also to send a message to the owners that they need to listen to people who place their trust in them; and need to offer a fair representation and fair price for the actual conditions and amenities of their rental property.

Idyllic Setting For A Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are a lover of nature, of lakeside bird watching, of roaring firepits, and sitting beneath a wide open sky at sunrise and sunset, this is the place for you! Newfound Lake is spectacular, its sparkling clean water and wild, untarnished landscape is a rare treasure. We spent a long weekend here at the Vintage Cottage during peak foliage season and the vista took our breath away. It was peaceful and private, the perfect antidote to the busy-ness of everyday life. Despite unseasonably cold weather during our stay, we were happy to bundle up in the Adirondack chairs that hang out over the water on the two-tiered deck to take in the incredible views. We were visited by loons, mergansers, and a bald eagle, and warmed ourselves in front of the large waterfront firepit, glasses of wine in hand. We dined in the lovely screened porch just steps from the sandy beach. And when the chill became fierce, we stepped inside the adorable cottage that remained toasty all weekend long from the brand new woodstove we kept stoked. This was a memorable getaway that will be the first of many trips to Newfound at the Vintage Cottage. Hosts Eileen and Paul are gracious and generous and we look forward to a long lasting connection with them and their beautiful lakefront home.

Post summer vacation on Newfound Lake

We had the perfect vacation. For anyone wondering, the photo of the cottage is exactly as is. Absolutely beautiful. It is simple living with no central heat and outdoor shower, but you have all that you need to enjoy the lake and a restful getaway.

The cottage is located on the West shore of Newfound Lake in the town of Hebron, NH. It is situated down a dirt road in a protected cove. The view from the porch is looking at the widest part of the lake in a very peaceful and quiet part of the lake.

This glacial lake is a beauty in the middle of New Hampshire and is 2.5 miles wide and 7 miles long, reaching depths of up to 180 feet, with 22 miles of shoreline. The water, fed by eight springs, is considered the most pristine in the state.

Newfound Lake had many camps. The greatest impact on Hebron from the establishment of these camps, especially the ones that survive to this day, was unintentional. Large areas of shoreline and many acres of surrounding land have been kept in natural condition because of these camps. Further, in several cases, the land is now locked away in perpetual trusts that insures that these many acres remain forever wild. The great camps that owned so much of the lakeshore on the north end kept the tourism activities and population density in Hebron much lower than that on the south end. This is still true today. Whereas, cottages and bungalows dotted the southern half, the northern half of the lake was limited to campgrounds, inns and private camp complexes.

We are blessed to be in this special part of Newfound Lake!

Newfound Lake has been referred to as New Hampshire's best kept secret and is known for excellent trout and bass fishing.

All rentals have a 9% New Hampshire Meals and Room Tax (License # 062247).
