Luxurious and quirky get-away

  • 5 of 5

My family of four and a friend's family of four wanted to have a relaxing weekend to catch up and explore the Berkshires. We found this house to be exactly what we wanted; we spent a lot of time inside, enjoying the jacuzzi and baking in the quaint kitchen. All of the amenities worked well, and the kids really loved the PS3 and Netflix. Since we're from the city, we were really looking forward to the gorgeous leaves and lots of space, which was exactly what we got. We will definitely be coming back again.

Renter’s Beware/Be Prepared

  • 1 of 5

I really wish I didn’t have to write this negative review, because this house does have a few key positives to it (namely space and location), but our experience renting/living in this house for the past week unfortunately had several unexpected drawbacks that it seems like other renters should be aware of.

-This house is extremely run down for the price. I think if the nightly rate were lower, or the house description a little more accurate, this may not have made the list. But for what it rents at, and what you get, it seems important to make other renters aware. Things like not being able to use the toaster oven and coffee maker together without tripping the circuit breaker (and having to go into the basement which is, even among New England basement standards, pretty bad), the weird layout of the kitchen, the cabinets doors falling off their hinges, thermostats falling out of the wall upstairs, the ‘curtain rod’ in the closet falling anytime you touch it to get the broom because it isn’t actually attached with anything but it’s just sort of shoved and bent into place, etc.

-it’s really dark. The ‘great room’ is nice to sit in but half the lights don’t work.

-half the lights in the lamps in any of the rooms don’t have light bulbs in them.

-the bathrooms are freezing, dark and the shower heads don’t work well. Only one of the bathrooms is light and clean and it does not have a shower in it.

- you have to haul your own trash and recycling to the dump which, again, even for New England rental standards is a first. And the dump is not exactly close, FYI. Depending on how many people are in your party plan on taking time out of your trip to make several trips to the dump.

-the fire alarms are VERY sensitive which is a good thing on one hand given that it’s such an old rambling house with questionable wiring that could go up in a second, but makes it really hard to cook (especially when you factor in the dirty oven) such that, if you want to spare the constant phone calls from the fire department and blaring alarms at every meal you end up having to cook with the windows open. It was below zero most of the days we stayed there. So it was cold and smokey just kind of really sucked.

The upsides are that there are 5 big bedrooms and the house is close to town and Butternut. But for all of it’s hassle, we won’t be renting here again. :(

Great location, spacious & private but needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

Four couples rented this property and enjoyed the 5 bedrooms w/4 bathrooms. It's a short 10 minute drive to Lennox, Stockbridge & Great Barrington with all the attractions these towns offer (we came for Tanglewood). We enjoyed the privacy, air conditioning, well-equipped kitchen, spacious living & dining room and large porch. It's fairly priced for these amenities in this area. The property, however, needs work; it's a "camp-like" residence(seems home-made) and not luxurious; the obscured long overgrown dirt driveway is a poor first impression; vines have overgrown side and back decks (no railings) that are in disrepair; minimal mixed linens, area rugs and bed covers need laundering; cleanliness (especially in the kitchen) is below average; bathrooms have chipped tiles and missing towel racks, but are all very functional. The owner was responsive and helpful.

Owner's Response: Cheryl, Thank you for the feedback. We apologize for the issues you encountered, especially with regards to cleanliness! The home is regularly cleaned, but is set in a rural area so there is definitely nature around. As far as usable porches go, the front porch is approximately 30 feet long and 12 feet deep with mountain views. We have shared your feedback with the homeowner so they can make any possible adjustments to address the issues mentioned. Thank you for letting us know, as we want guests to have the best possible vacation experience in this home. Best, The Evolve Team

Owner's Response: Tyler, We are very sorry to hear your stay fell short of expectations. We’ve shared your feedback with the homeowner who let us know that the there are two twin mattresses in only one of the bedrooms. We do apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temperature in the downstairs bedroom. There are air conditioners in all of the other bedrooms, but this one doesn’t have the right type of windows for a unit, and the homeowner is looking into another solution for this. Additionally, the upstairs drain was unclogged and the jacuzzi is working. Thank you for letting us know, as we want to ensure future guests have an excellent stay in this home. Best, The Evolve Team

Location but not luxury

  • 3 of 5

This house was great for size and location. We had nine people and had space for all. And it's an easy drive to anything in the Berkshires. The deck is a relaxing place for the afternoon. Things to know: You are not getting luxury, and one of the bedrooms does not have an air conditioner, so if it is warmer than about 60 at night it can be rough. The kitchen is functional but seal your food as ants are an issue, and you have to take your garbage to the city garbage site every other day or so. The gas grill is functional but very rusted. The welcome packet is more about checkout and what not to do, but management was accessible. Make sure you have GPS because the driveway is unmarked. If you are looking for location this is it, but if you want luxury (or near luxury) think twice.

Owner's Response: Barrett, We are sorry to hear your stay fell short of expectations and we appreciate your feedback. We’ve shared your comments with the homeowner who let us know that the windows in the downstairs bedroom don’t allow for an air conditioning unit, but he is looking into another solution. The home is regularly cleaned and well maintained, but it is in a rural setting so there is definitely nature around, but we do apologize for any uninvited “guests.” Thanks for letting us know, and we hope to assist you in booking a vacation rental that exceeds your expectations in the future! Structure of house is NOT SAFE

  • 1 of 5

Location was ok - but I do not recommend staying at this house if you have children. They have 2 staircases and both are very dangerous (even for adults). There was a door opening out of the master bedroom straight into the staircase. Unfortunately, one child fell backwards all the way down the stairs - the parent jumped out, trying to grab her - he fell down as well and got badly injured. We made sure the owners were aware of this but we did not get any response from them at all - I was expecting at least a light apology, but nothing at all.

In any case, I just want to prevent anyone else from getting injured in the future.

Also, the heat stopped working the last day we were there. The thermostat read 58 degrees! Contacted the person in charge and someone came to look at it about 2 hours later. Unfortunately we were told it was not working so we used the space heaters that were available at the house. Ended up leaving earlier than planned since it was cold in the house.

We will not be going back to this house... I hope they fix some things up in the house before renting it out to anyone else.
