I love the Spring Green area. I originally moved here in 1983 to work in the costume shop at American Players Theatre. Since then, I have worked at the Santa Fe Opera and The Goodman Theatre in Chicago enjoying painting and dyeing costumes. I have also worked professionally as a Textile Designer for Lands End and American Girl. I like to travel and visit parts of the world where beautiful costumes are still created by indigenous artisans. I collect textiles and enjoy having them around me in my home.
Judith Smith purchased this house in 2013
In 2013, I purchased this property. I was learning to golf and am an admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style. When I learned this house was the first "model home" built for the resort and was designed by Wright's chief draughtsman, John Howe, I became even more thrilled! The home is unique to The House On the Rock Resort complex. It is independent of the resort but is part of it's former history. I have moved farther north of the SG region but my family and I love the house and want to continue to enjoy it as well as share it with others!
The first thing I notice about the property is the gorgeous tall pines surrounding it. Once inside the house, the view outside towards the golf course is spectacular. The outside comes inside through the expanse of windows! The space feels serene, open and light. The screen porch brings one even closer to nature. I love sitting there and listening to the spring peepers--or frogs! So many birds frequent my yard-bluebirds nest in the bird house, grosbeaks at the feeders. In the winter I have deer come right up to my windows. I also have noticed coyotes in the snow frolicking!
Beautiful setting and views. Fun to discover all the Frank Lloyd Wright touches around the home. Perfect setting for four friends to share meals, play cards, read and explore.
Nice touches that owner provided coffee and tea and basic spices plus towels and sheets.
Only negatives were slow DSL service, which may not disturb most people, and no garage available. Had we known we were traveling partially on a gravel road daily and that the pictured garage would not be available, we would have driven a different car.
All in all, a great time was had by all!
We had such a great time in Spring Green! We were there for a wedding, but found so many great places to eat and to shop. You have to go on one of the Taliesen tours - they are fabulous.
The house was immaculate, welcoming, and well, just perfect. We can't wait to go back again. Spring Green is our new destination!
We loved our stay in the area and especially in this lovely home. All the amenities that make a vacation memorable - stunning setting on the golf course, clean and beautifully decorated, and many touches of hospitality that made our stay delightful. We would definitely recommend this listing to our friends and relatives and we hope come back again. We enjoyed touring Taliesin, golfing, the American Players Theater with outdoor plays and picnics in the woods, the town and merchants and artists of Spring Green were so welcoming and friendly - many great conversations with local folks.
From the time we drove into the driveway until we left, we had everything we could possibly need for a wonderful weekend in Spring Green. This home is tastefully decorated, breathtaking views and quiet and serene. Everything you need for a short trip to an extended stay is in this home. The owner is easy to work with and provides you with all that you need. Thank you and our compliments to the owner on a fabulous property.
It is a wonderful place with a hint of Frank Lloyd wright design. The views are great. The house is fresh and clean. Very welcoming and charming.
Located only 45 minutes west of Madison, this home is in the heart of the Wisconsin River Valley. Enjoy close proximity to American Players Theatre, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, The House on the Rock Attraction (15 minutes away), Tower Hill State Park and it's historic Shot Tower, the WI River, and the town of Spring Green (pop.1622)-noted as one of the top 20 small towns in America by Smithsonian magazine in 2014.
The house is adjacent to The House on the Rock Resort and it's beautifully designed 27-hole golf course-----
The 18 hole Springs Course was designed by world renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and is rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest. The course winds along the valley floor, has generous landing areas and water hazards on nearly every hole.
Equally as challenging and visually breath-taking is the North Nine, designed by Roger Packard and Two-Time U.S. Open Champion Andy North. The course, also rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, offers dramatic changes in elevation and subtly sloped greens.
TALIESIN-Taliesin was the home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He first designed the home for himself in 1911. From that time until his death in 1959, Wright continuously changed the home and the surrounding landscape, which included buildings that he had designed for his family.
At the time of Frank Lloyd Wright's death, "Taliesin" referred to the home, the surrounding 600-acre estate, and 4 other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center is your gateway to all things Frank Lloyd Wright. Overlooking the scenic Wisconsin River is a Wright-designed building where you can purchase a tour, shop in the Taliesin Bookstore, and enjoy a meal in the Riverview Terrace Cafe, all while taking in the picturesque view through windows which sweep the entire building.
The regular season runs May 1 through October 31 and includes six types of tours. House Tours are also available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in April and November. Because the Taliesin Estate is privately owned, it is accessible only on a guided tour.
All tours begin at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, which is free and open to the public while tours are going on.
Riverview Terrace Cafe
The Riverview Terrace Cafe has a warm, friendly atmosphere with casual dining.
THE HOUSE ON THE ROCK-- a home built in the 1960s by architect Alex Jordan. Over the years, the house has expanded to house multiple fanciful rooms (like the Infinity Room, which juts out 200-feet over the forest below) and bizarre collections.
AMERICAN PLAYERS THEATRE-- a nationally-known and renowned theater that features plays outdoors and indoors. Each season APT features 6 plays in their Up the Hill Theatre, an outdoor stage that sits atop the valley within the woods, and 4 plays inside their intimate and captivating indoor Touchstone Theatre. Their touching, funny, dramatic plays are a must-see for those visiting the Spring Green area. The real treat are the plays Up the Hill, you will never see such great theater in such a beautiful, awe-inspiring setting. Watch the masterpieces of Shakespeare, Coward, Stoppard and others as you hear the crickets and birds chirping and gaze at the moon above. You may even see a play one night and the next day see the actors around Spring Green relaxing in a local cafe or bookstore!
