About Susan Barnes

Susan Barnes, Owner

Born and raised in a small village just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland where her family owned and operated a small full service hotel. Upon leaving home and many travels, Susan decided to settle in the great Finger Lakes Region in upstate New York. She chose the area because it reminds her so much of Scotland. Susan can be found picking fruit on the farm or selling gorgeous locally grown produce on the farm stand.

Cathy Barnes, Manager

Cathy has spent most of the last 20 years living in and loving upstate New York. She is entering her final year of college for hospitality management. When she is not digging in the gardens, pruning trees or serving customers on the farm stand, Cathy works at the local Cornell Cooperative Extension office assisting with adminstrative duties and marketing.

Susan Barnes purchased this apartment in 1997

Why Susan Barnes chose Seneca Lake

The family decided to settle in the Finger Lakes Region some 30 years ago because it reminded them so much of Scotland. Now, we would like to share a wee piece of Scotland with you! We truly hope you enjoy your stay in the Buchanan Suite, which is named after our clan. Take a left or right turn from the farm and we promise you will not be disappointed!

Great location for the outdoor enthusiast, beautiful natural surroundings

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to write this review and would prefer to keep this place all to myself. Small suite with modest kitchen and bedroom with a dining area. Comfortable enough for a 1 week stay for two people and a dog. The kitchen is suitable for cooking simpler meals, but not well equipped utensil wise. There is a dining area outside the suite under the tree. Awesome location if you like biking and hiking. The view from the hillsides are beautiful. The National Forest is nearby with lots of trails. The back roads are excellent for biking if you avoid the gravel roads. Even 414 has a wide shoulder, stunning views of the lake and good riding, except on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The nearest grocery is 5 miles away in Watkins Glen. Lots of Vineyards, Orchards, Farmers Markets, Brewery's and sophisticated dining nearby.

I prefer this property due to it's natural beauty and there are few choices in this category nearby. The suite is in a Cherry Orchard inter planted with flower and herb beds. There is white steepled church next door. Rows of Concord grapes and an apple orchard surround the property. Located in the Village of Hector at a crossroads, across the street from a convenience store, close to the road, but still quiet. Comfortable, affordable, awesome location and they take well behaved dogs.

Comfortable and relaxing getaway near Seneca Lake

  • 4 of 5

First of all, Susan and Cathy were utterly charming and helpful in getting us anything we needed and guiding us on ideas about touring around the area. The apartment was very clean: one large bedroom with a comfortable queen bed, one reading chair, a wardrobe, and a table for two. Kitchen was pretty basic and stocked with coffeemaker, cook-ware and dishes that enabled us to prepare breakfasts and a couple of dinners, which we often took to the little table outside the door by the orchard. Fruits and veggies at their stand just steps away. Just 10 minutes from Watkins Glen gorge and a number of fabulous wineries and breweries -- seemingly one every quarter mile or so. Vineyards everywhere you look and many lake views from the roadside and hills (though one cannot see the lake from this property). Recommended food and drink stops include the Stonecat Cafe (lunch more reasonable than dinner), Grist Iron for craft beer and food with live entertainment at dinner, and Dano's Heuriger (Austrian) - try to time your meal with the sun setting west over the lake. The Lucky Hare and Two Goats breweries are great spots for beer lovers, and Hazlitt's for cider and wine. Hike in the Finger Lakes State Forest on dozens of different trails, including to the "Queen's Castle", a beautiful and serene spot on Seneca. Sit by the lake or swim at the nearby Smith Campground, or a little further north at Lodi State Park. The only down-side to this beautiful location was the traffic noise during the day, as the house is on the major north-south route along the eastern shore of the lake. If you bring chairs toward the back of the gardens behind the house, it's a little quieter -- but that's the only reason we give this a 4 vs a 5. The hosts made our stay so comfortable. We'll be back!

Charming place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was a delightful place to stay right along the Seneca Wine Trail and within close proximity of Watkins Glen, Geneva, and other neighboring lakes. Susan and Cathy were so welcoming and accommodating. They both recommended Toni's Diner, a very short walk from the suite - it's a definite must for breakfast. The suite itself was immaculate and stocked with an assortment of coffees, teas, hot chocolates as well as some kitchen basics for preparing meals in the suite if one chooses to do so. I highly recommend this property as a place to stay and plan to stay here on future trips to the Finger Lakes region.

Vacation in the Finger Lakes

  • 4 of 5

Me and my wife stayed at this lovely rental in Hector. Susan and her daughter Cathy were very nice people. The cherry trees that were right out the front door still had ripe sweet cherries to pick. The rental is small, but has what we needed for our 5 day stay. Susan helped suggest places to eat and things to do. They are perfectly located in the middle of everything. The rental was clean and very quaint. Loved our stay and we would go back when we can.
