We are very involved in the community and heritage properties.
John and Michèle originally are from Montréal and have lived in several towns, cities and countries. John is a graduate of Parsons School of Design, NYC
The 'Old Surgery' is located at a corner in the centre of town, diagonally across from the post office.
Shopping, restaurants, marina, Riverwalk Park and Fort Wellington heritage site are only a short walk away.
The Old surgery was just the right size for the two of us. It had everything we could possibly want. It was very clean and well appointed. John and Michele provided the historical information about the house which added a little something to our stay. The little garden is delightful, an oasis in the middle of town.
We did most of our own meals so found O'Reilly's Independent Grocery a great place to get groceries. I hated to leave the lovely, cozy kitchen.
The location of the house was perfect for the trips to family spread around that part of Ontario. We visited Fort Wellington which is about 4 blocks away - excellent look at history in the area. Brockville is not too far away and is also a great place for Upper Canada's history; nor is Upper Canada Village and the U.C. bird sanctuary. A nightly walk along the river was a great way to end the day.
People in town were very friendly. The farmers' market has some very interesting vendors - both their products and their personalities.
We would not recommend the place for someone with mobility problems as the stairs are rather steep but for all others, definitely a good affordable home away from home.
Thank you, John and Michele, for looking after us so well and for making this historical building available to travelers.
A charming well-appointed historic home conveniently located. There are restaurants nearby and the amphitheater is also within easy walking distance. A couple of blocks in the other direction leads to a pleasant beach which we enjoyed.
What a wonderful place to stay, very quaint and well equipped, beds were great. Everything was top notch. Owner made us feel very comfortable and accommodating!
Lovely home, lovely garden, lovely townsfolk! Went for a girl's getaway and didn't want to leave. John and Michèle were gracious hosts that thought of every item one could possibly need/want! Close to so much and we made day trips from the Old Surgery. 50 minute drive from Ottowa airport. So much to do from here and they made us feel welcome and right at home. Beautifully decorated and even better than the photos depict! First class and first rate furnishings! The ONLY drawback, if you are a light sleeper would be street noise as the home was on a corner lot; however, we kept the big beautiful windows wide open to let the breezes flow through...it may well have been quiter at night with them closed. Overall a fab stay, fab price, great location and WONDERFUL host and hostess! I highly recommend and will return! Thanks for a lovely four days!
We both needed a break from Ottawa, so we looked up this restored heritage house on VRBO. My wife had seen it during a previous visit and wondered. Our stay turned out very well. It is close to everything in the downtown by walking and not a long drive to the major grocery store too. The interior is nicely decorated and has all the modern appliances one could ask for. The owner is very pleasant to deal with and attentive. The only thing missing was a fireplace...
The listing with its pictures cannot do this little gem justice, it is much nicer. We really did not want to leave again and regretted that we could only stay for three nights.
One really notices that John and Michele were rebuilding this house for themselves and lived here. And then they left it for us to enjoy, keeping the great interior design and all the amenities one needs not only for a vacation but for a home.
Thank you so much, John, for showing us everything and the wonderful stay.
