Whidbey Island House Rental Photos and Description

2 bdrm/2 bath, Sleeps 5, Comfy Yr Round, Direct to Beach, VIEWS, Boats, Pool

Sandpiper Haven is a charming two bedroom, two bath, single story, low bank waterfront house located on world famous Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, with direct beach access , phenomenal views, a great deck, nearby boat launch, and much much more. Conveniently located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, enjoy fabulous VIEWS south across Penn Cove of the Olympic Mountains and Coupeville, and east of the Cascades! With annual rainfall of just over 21 inches, nearly half of the regional rainfall, you can enjoy being in the rainshadow of Whidbey Island.

We are also very PROUD to announce our NEW Vacation Waterfront Sister Property on Whidbey Island, about 10 minutes from Sandpiper Haven, on the dramatic west beach of Whidbey Island: visit Sunset Beach Haven, property VRBO/Home Away ID number #4059156 for more info on our new listing.

Back to Sandpiper Haven - which we have owned and managed since 2011. Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Evenings can be spent by a private firepit roasting marshmallows, curled up with a book on super comfy new living furniture by a gas fireplace, playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the new HDTV.

Or, you may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Langley, Oak Harbor and beyond.

We have added many updates including high speed internet, new HDTV with cable, Roku and ipod docking stereo, new outdoor furnishings, gas grill, fire pit, enhanced promontory, new Queen Sleeper Sofa, and much more. This is a low-allergen environment. For this reason, no pets and no smoking are permitted (and please don't ask). Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting.

During Peak Months, also enjoy access to two sea kayaks and a 12' Rowboat to Qualified Guests to explore the cove, fish or crab (and yes, we have crabbing and fishing gear too).

Also, access to the local heated outdoor community pool as our Guests Memorial Day Weekend and mid-June through Labor Day.

The house sleeps up to 5 comfortably, and generally best for groups 2-4, with a heavenly pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two twins in the 2nd bedroom. A new sleeper sofa with additional memory foam topper in the Living Room. We even provide a portable crib and bedding for infants. Dine comfortably inside or out. We can make exceptions for a sixth Guest, but this approved on a case-by-case basis.

An outdoor private promontory allows you to get further away from it all, boasting even more fabulous views down the beach and across Penn Cove.

Action seekers may kayak the cove or explore the many hiking and bike trails within minutes from the house. Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch it from our private community-owned boat launch and dock just several houses from the property.

The house was built in 2003 so is well-insulated and perfect for year-round enjoyment. Many Guests spend their holidays here, finding plenty of cookware and warmth for a joyful getaway.

More about the area: The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, visible across the cove, can be reached in minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the North, is also minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. And to the West lies Historical Ebey's Landing Preserve and the nearby Coupeville Ferry with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, the town of Langley, and Deception Pass are also nearby.

Best suited for: families, romantic getaways, couples retreats, girls weekends away, small reunions, great stays when attending a wedding, holiday gatherings, anniversary present for the grandparents, rewards for employees, adventure-seekers, and many more.

About Julie and Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.

Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie and Peter Mattson chose Whidbey Island

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this house unique

Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.

And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).

Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

Exceeded high expectations

  • 5 of 5

Reviews were stellar so our expectations were set pretty high, yet our 3-night stay exceeded the high expectations! House was perfect for our needs, comfy and cozy but not cramped. Our toddler settled in immediately with the toys and view, and we relished the views, the water, the birds, the quiet and the sandy beach below. Idyllic and restorative, and we can't wait to come back. Thank you Julie and Peter!

The jewel of Penn Cove

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful vacation at this beautiful home on the waterfront at Penn Cove. The owners are beyond outstanding to work with, made us feel like we were family from the moment we inquired about their property. They did not miss a single detail, from an impeccably appointed home, to suggestions of restaurants, things to do on the island, and even a welcome note with a bottle of wine to greet us when we arrived. This home just blew away our expectations. Their home is clean, comfortable, warm and inviting. If it weren't for the gorgeous beach 10 steps away, we would have been happy to stay and enjoy the spectacular view from house! We spent hours on the beach picking Penn Cove mussels, and digging for razor clams down the beachfront. Our kids had fun and we got to spend quality family time together. We will definitely have to return in the summer to take advantage of the kayaks and the row boat, but there was still plenty of fun to be had on the beach without it as well. They even have a bonfire pit out back, which we enjoyed making s'mores and singing silly campfire songs.

If you are like me and read all the reviews, believe it, this home and these owners are the real gem. I would not hesitate to return and tell all my family and friends. Thank you Julie and Peter for a spectacular vacation and giving us these irreplaceable memories and bonding moments for our family!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Relaxing weekend...

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at the Sandpiper Haven! The house is right on the water, with very nice stairs to the beach. The weather was very stormy during our visit and we enjoyed watching the storm from the comfy furniture in the nice warm living room. We even saw six eagles hanging out together one morning! The house was very clean and it was just t short drive to Coupeville. Julie and Peter are very responsive and we could tell they really care about the house and their guests. We stayed for 3 nights and we were not ready to leave. :-)

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, more amenities than we were expecting, charming grounds and outside seating areas that were surprising and very well thought out. We had a lovely, relaxing weekend at this house. The owners were also great with their quick responses and suggestions of things to do on the island. Check in and check out processes were very simple. Location was great for the things we were looking for, piece and quiet, to be on the water, and close enough to do some hiking at Deception Pass. Stayed for two nights and would have loved to stay longer. Highly recommend.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

Have been reading other reviews and agree with them all. This is an exceptional vacation rental. Will we be back, no doubt about it!

It was so warm and inviting it just felt like home. Having access to the beautiful beach was amazing.

We stayed with another couple and there was plenty of room. All four agree that there was nothing lacking. We cooked two great dinners there but the first night we went to the recommended Christopher's. It was fantastic, seemed like everyone went home with doggy bags, not surprising, the portions were large. Bonus for us was that it was their 14th anniversary, all main meals were $14 and bottles of wine 14% off.

I will be telling everyone about Sandpiper Haven, my husband said it was my best pick ever and we have stayed many places.

Thank you for providing an excellent vacation rental.

Owner's Response: Wow Cynthia! You folks totally made our day with such a kind review. And you were there during stormy January weekend! So glad you enjoyed and also got to take in some of the lovely local culture and great restaurants (yes, Christopher's is our favorite, too). How fun about the #14! Come again. -Julie and Peter

Fabulous home with even more fabulous owners

  • 5 of 5

I've rented numerous properties through vrbo/HomeAway, and this was by far the best experience I've had. I was familiar with the property having visited friends who were staying there, and I knew it would be a great location for our group of four to bring in the New Year. The property was, as expected, lovely and just perfect for our needs. Though we were two couples and the house is not huge, it was plenty of space for us and we were not falling over each other. I think the open spaces and all the light makes the house feel larger than it is.

There is nothing I could say less than 100% positive about the home itself, from its perfect location on a quiet beach, to the ultra-comfy furnishings and well-stocked kitchen, and most importantly to the outdoor spaces which are just beyond compare. We used the firepit and decks even in the chilly winter months and felt very comfortable. We did view the kayaks and fishing gear with some sadness and vowed to return in the summer months.

I must also mention that I have not seen such a well-stocked house from top to bottom. There is literally nothing that they have not thought of! OK, OK, my husband complained that there was not a whisk, but come on...really? Having been a vrbo owner myself in the past, I was unbelievably impressed and in fact felt a little bad that I hadn't done such a good job with my guests of thinking of every little need! The house is also stocked with more games and puzzles and books and fun things than you could shake a stick at.

Despite the property itself being fantastic, what really sets this listing apart is the responsiveness, kindness and fantastic communication from the owners, Julie and Peter. An enormous amount of useful information was imparted with apparent happiness to do so. Communication was frequent without being overbearing and, for lack of a better word, "sunny." The messages were always a joy to read and full of tips and good information. The owners also, without my asking, allowed us to have a slightly early check-in and slightly late check-out, which were much appreciated.

Julie and Peter should make a business of giving seminars on how to run a rental property. Seriously.

Owner's Response: Wow Krista, We are speechless. You really made our day. You describe the home and vacation experience we really want to provide for our Guests so it warms our hearts to know we have achieved that. My only comment - we will DEFINITELY have a whisk for your husband for your next visit, ha ha :). All the best, and we look forward to having you and your family back. -Julie and Peter
