Back to Sandpiper Haven - which we have owned and managed since 2011. Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Evenings can be spent by a private firepit roasting marshmallows, curled up with a book on super comfy new living furniture by a gas fireplace, playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the new HDTV.

Or, you may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Langley, Oak Harbor and beyond.

We have added many updates including high speed internet, new HDTV with cable, Roku and ipod docking stereo, new outdoor furnishings, gas grill, fire pit, enhanced promontory, new Queen Sleeper Sofa, and much more. This is a low-allergen environment. For this reason, no pets and no smoking are permitted (and please don't ask). Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting.

During Peak Months, also enjoy access to two sea kayaks and a 12' Rowboat to Qualified Guests to explore the cove, fish or crab (and yes, we have crabbing and fishing gear too).

Also, access to the local heated outdoor community pool as our Guests Memorial Day Weekend and mid-June through Labor Day.

The house sleeps up to 5 comfortably (6 under special circumstances and with additional fee), and generally best for groups up to 4, with a heavenly pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two twins in the 2nd bedroom. A new sleeper sofa with additional memory foam topper in the Living Room. We even provide a portable crib and bedding for infants. Dine comfortably inside or out. We can make exceptions for a sixth Guest, but this approved on a case-by-case basis.

An outdoor private promontory allows you to get further away from it all, boasting even more fabulous views down the beach and across Penn Cove.

Action seekers may kayak the cove or explore the many hiking and bike trails within minutes from the house. Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch it from our private community-owned boat launch and dock just several houses from the property.

The house was built in 2003 so is well-insulated and perfect for year-round enjoyment. Many Guests spend their holidays here, finding plenty of cookware and warmth for a joyful getaway.

More about the area: The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, visible across the cove, can be reached in minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the North, is also minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. And to the West lies Historical Ebey's Landing Preserve and the nearby Coupeville Ferry with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, the town of Langley, and Deception Pass are also nearby.

About Julie and Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.

Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie and Peter Mattson chose Whidbey Island

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this house unique

Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.

And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).

Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

Snuggled in quiet Penn Cove with a perfect southern exposure for beautiful sunrises and sunsets

  • 5 of 5

Julie and Peter have thoughtfully furnished their cottage with everything you will need for a relaxing getaway. The cottage lived bigger than its 1000+ sq ft with a perfect layout. The back deck with a southern exposure and open view of Penn Cove provided long days and evenings to relax and take in the spectacular view. The protected inlet was perfect for kayaking and we were lucky enough to be out when a pod of porpoises came to visit. Being close to Coupeville for dining and Ft.Ebey for hiking was an added bonus.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

It was our "Girls Weekend" and we had so much fun. We were there last year also but this year the weather was beautiful just like the picture. We walked the beach, sat in the sun, visited the local communities which were wonderful and close. Everything we needed and more was available. All around a super place to stay. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet, fun place to stay. Barbara

Beautiful Place!

  • 5 of 5

Sandpiper Haven is a beautiful place. The home was spotlessly clean, the interior was tasteful and very comfortable and they had everything you could need for a wonderful stay. Penn Cove is the clearest water I've ever seen on Puget Sound. There was a constant wildlife presence including seals, herons and a spectacular appearance of a pod of Orcas right out front. Hiking at nearby Ebey's landing was amazing and there was even a local market a few blocks away with goodies like home made pies and local produce. The owners were super friendly and helpful. It was a perfect vacation spot!

Sandpiper Haven is Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We spent a marvelous 2 weeks at this exceptional property. The owners go out of their way to ensure your comfort and enjoyment-from the welcoming emails, the second day check in to ensure everything is to your liking and the "enjoy your final evening and have a safe journey" message. The house is spotless, the beds are comfortable and the view is beautiful. We will miss Harold the Heron, Sammie the Seal, and the rooster who does not know what time it is. We look forward to returning to this treasure in the Pacific Northwest....and if you go-don't miss the Oystercatcher. Perhaps one of the best restaurants ever.. And the Whidbey Ice Cream bars at 3 Sisters Market....

Great View and Gardens

  • 5 of 5

We stayed four days at the Sandpiper Cottage and were extremely happy with the accommodations . It was very clean and equipped with all the amenities you can imagine. You could tell the owners take great pride in making your vacation relaxing. The landscaping was neat, flowering and beautiful. The smell of lavender from the bushes makes being outside even better. With the great views and location we were very pleased to chosen such a wonderful place.

A true delight, NW "island time"

  • 5 of 5

The Sandpiper Haven was perfect for our family. The owners provided games, movies, kayaks, and great coffee to top it off. We enjoyed watching the wildlife: herons, bald eagles, deer, and a seal? The tides came and went and constantly changed our view of Penn Cove. We felt like we got away, and good restaurants were just 10 minutes up or down the road. We highly recommend the place and the owners made it easy to come in and feel right at home.
