Julie and Peter
We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.
Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011
We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.
Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.
And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).
Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.
We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.
The house is lovely, well-maintained, and comfortable. This may have been my most comfortable house rental experience since there were all these little considerate touches like a well-stocked amount of toys and puzzles and little extra toiletries in case you need.
The location is great and we spent a good amount of time on the beach despite the cold. We also enjoyed going to nearby Coupeville, which is a cute little town.
I also appreciate how communicative the owners are and how they provide information in a timely manner. It just made our overall trip all the more simple.
We would gladly book this place again!
This was our second stay at Sandpiper Haven and I'm sure it won't be our last. The owners are so responsive and helpful - we always heard back from them quickly. The house is right on the water with an amazing view and is clean, well stocked and quaint. It is a short drive to town. We love the fire pit! Perfect on a cool evening. Thanks for sharing your home with us.
I'm almost at a loss for words when it comes to Sandpiper Haven's special touches, unsurpassed comfort, level of cleanliness, the practical and whimsical little details, and - of course - the amazing location. Julie's and Peter's communication, preparation, and availability to provide feedback are incredible. Walking into Sandpiper Haven is like walking into our own home - just better! Frankly, this place has spoiled us consistently (for the 4th time this fall), and it is the *only* vacation rental we can confidently give a five-star rating. This time, we brought my retired parents, who are seasoned travelers from Germany, and none of us wanted to leave after our too-short stay. Our days were filled with snacking and reading on the large porch, watching the wildlife on Penn Cove, digging in the sand, safely kayaking along the beach, playing fun family games, and admiring the stunning moon rise over the water one night and the fall fog the next morning. Everything is thought of in this place - you just have to bring yourself and a willingness to sit back and truly breathe in all the sensory experiences beautiful Whidbey has to offer. We can't thank you enough, Julie and Peter, for offering an allergy-safe environment for a family of three generations and for trusting us with this gem of a vacation home. We vow to be back soon. Vielen Dank!
We had a wonderful visit to Sandpiper Haven. The house is directly on Penn Cove, providing beautiful views of the water. We visited in mid-October when the crisp air made for the perfect atmosphere for autumn walks and sunset views. There were only two of us, so the second bedroom in the home went unused, but it was well-appointed. While the house isn't enormous, it would easily be big enough for a small family.
It would be fair to say that Julie and Peter have truly thought of every single detail a guest could need, which made the cottage genuinely feel like a home away from home. From the moment we arrived, we noticed that extreme care had been taken to make sure that all of our needs were covered. There was also extensive information about the area, personalized restaurant reviews, and plenty of board games for rainy PNW days. We didn't use the TV much, but there are tons of channels and a streaming box. We found everything to be very clean and in good, working condition.
As soon as we booked the home, we received extensive detailed information about the house. Julie and Peter were also easily available to answer any question, but we honestly didn't have any since all of the information we received was so thorough.
We really had a wonderful few days on Penn Cove and wished with all of our hearts that we could have stayed much longer to enjoy the charm, beauty, and serenity of Whidbey Island.
Even though the weather(storm worse that the Columbus Day storm in 1962) cut our trip short by one night and day we had a wonderful time. We will rebook for next year because we loved it so much. Right on the water, close to Oak Harbor and Coupeville. Because of the storm we did not get into Coupeville so we will return in 2017 to see all we missed. Many things to see that are close by. We ordered pizza in and played cards and watched a movie on Friday night. Would recommend this cute home to anyone wanting a quiet weekend or longer. Beautiful place to stay. Thank you to owners Peter and Julie for all their help. Can't wait until next year to be back.
The beautiful view of Penn Cove and the Olympic mountains from Sandpiper Haven exceeded our expectations! We enjoyed experiencing even more incredible scenery and wildlife while kayaking around the cove…so nice of the owners to let us use their boats. Julie and Peter provided excellent directions and instructions and have thought of everything needed to make one’s stay comfortable and relaxing. Sandpiper Haven wins the prize for the best equipped home we’ve ever rented! It's only a short drive to Coupeville, Oak Harbor, and fun places to go hiking. Dinner at Christopher’s in Coupeville was delicious. We hope to return and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sandpiper Haven to our friends.
