Sandpiper Haven is a charming two bedroom, two bath, single story, low bank waterfront house located on world famous Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, with direct beach access , phenomenal views, a great deck, nearby boat launch, and much much more. Conveniently located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, enjoy fabulous VIEWS south across Penn Cove of the Olympic Mountains and Coupeville, and east of the Cascades! With annual rainfall of just over 21 inches, nearly half of the regional rainfall, you can enjoy being in the rainshadow of Whidbey Island.

We are also very PROUD to announce our NEW Vacation Waterfront Sister Property on Whidbey Island, about 10 minutes from Sandpiper Haven, on the dramatic west beach of Whidbey Island: visit Sunset Beach Haven, property VRBO/Home Away ID number #4059156 for more info on our new listing.

Back to Sandpiper Haven - which we have owned and managed since 2011. Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Evenings can be spent by a private firepit roasting marshmallows, curled up with a book on super comfy new living furniture by a gas fireplace, playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the new HDTV.

Or, you may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Langley, Oak Harbor and beyond.

We have added many updates including high speed internet, new HDTV with cable, Roku and ipod docking stereo, new outdoor furnishings, gas grill, fire pit, enhanced promontory, new Queen Sleeper Sofa, and much more. This is a low-allergen environment. For this reason, no pets and no smoking are permitted (and please don't ask). Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting.

During Peak Months, also enjoy access to two sea kayaks and a 12' Rowboat to Qualified Guests to explore the cove, fish or crab (and yes, we have crabbing and fishing gear too).

Also, access to the local heated outdoor community pool as our Guests Memorial Day Weekend and mid-June through Labor Day.

The house sleeps up to 5 comfortably, and generally best for groups 2-4, with a heavenly pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two twins in the 2nd bedroom. A new sleeper sofa with additional memory foam topper in the Living Room. We even provide a portable crib and bedding for infants. Dine comfortably inside or out. We can make exceptions for a sixth Guest, but this approved on a case-by-case basis.

An outdoor private promontory allows you to get further away from it all, boasting even more fabulous views down the beach and across Penn Cove.

Action seekers may kayak the cove or explore the many hiking and bike trails within minutes from the house. Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch it from our private community-owned boat launch and dock just several houses from the property.

The house was built in 2003 so is well-insulated and perfect for year-round enjoyment. Many Guests spend their holidays here, finding plenty of cookware and warmth for a joyful getaway.

More about the area: The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, visible across the cove, can be reached in minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the North, is also minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. And to the West lies Historical Ebey's Landing Preserve and the nearby Coupeville Ferry with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, the town of Langley, and Deception Pass are also nearby.

Best suited for: families, romantic getaways, couples retreats, girls weekends away, small reunions, great stays when attending a wedding, holiday gatherings, anniversary present for the grandparents, rewards for employees, adventure-seekers, and many more.

About Julie and Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.

Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie and Peter Mattson chose Whidbey Island

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this house unique

Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.

And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).

Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

Wonderful place to stay on Penn Cove!

  • 5 of 5

The beautiful view of Penn Cove and the Olympic mountains from Sandpiper Haven exceeded our expectations! We enjoyed experiencing even more incredible scenery and wildlife while kayaking around the cove…so nice of the owners to let us use their boats. Julie and Peter provided excellent directions and instructions and have thought of everything needed to make one’s stay comfortable and relaxing. Sandpiper Haven wins the prize for the best equipped home we’ve ever rented! It's only a short drive to Coupeville, Oak Harbor, and fun places to go hiking. Dinner at Christopher’s in Coupeville was delicious. We hope to return and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sandpiper Haven to our friends.

Beautiful, comfortable, great view and easy beach access.

  • 5 of 5

Sandpiper Haven was a delight from the moment we got out of the car! The property is nicely landscaped and the lavender was in bloom. The grounds and landscape lighting are well thought out. We were delighted by the inside of the home as well. The furnishings were in good condition and very comfortable. The house and kitchen are well stocked with anything you might need: games, puzzles, CD/iPod player, spices, a blender, waffle iron, clothes iron, even an apple corer. The neighbor across the road picked his apple trees during our stay and so we had baked apples for dessert, finding a pie pan, apple corer, and spices in the cupboard. What a treat! The master bed was comfortable (we did not use the 2nd bedroom). We enjoyed time around the fire pit every evening and ample firewood was provided. Morning coffee out on the deck, listening to the water, enjoying the great view, was relaxing and healing. There was not one thing we needed which wasn't provided. We even went to the community pool for a swim, and it was nice too (not resort style, but nice, clean and the staff was friendly). We very much look forward to our next get-away at Sandpiper Haven, and highly recommend this lovely home.

Relaxing Vacation on Penn Cove

  • 5 of 5

We have rented many homes over the years but, the Mattson's lovely home on Penn Cove certainly has to rate among the top two or three we have ever rented. The home is exceptionally clean, well maintained, well equipped with whatever you might need. and is located on scenic Penn Cove. We previously rented this home for one week in October of 2015 and promptly booked it for a three week period in July/August of 2016. We were not disappointed. The Mattson's are quick to respond to your every needs and they obviously take great pride in their rental property. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a home that is clean, well maintained, and located close to restaurants, shopping, and opportunities for kids to explore the many attractions on Whidbey Island. You will not be disappointed.

Sandpiper Haven-Oak Harbor Washington

  • 5 of 5

We had the opportunity to stay at Sandpiper Haven the week of July 4th, 2016 and had a wonderful time. The home was spectacular scenery was fabulous and Julie and Peter Mattison provided all of the comforts of home.

We were visiting our son at the Naval base in Oak Harbor and just wanted a place to relax and unwind. We viewed several places on the internet, but Sand Piper Haven's site seemed to call to us and the scenery depicted on the site was even more spectacular in person.

The house was conveniently located to town and to the ferries, as well as a 2 hours drive to Seattle.

If you are in the Oak Harbor Washington area and looking for a great get away, we highly recommend Sand Piper Haven.

Outstanding property and owners!

  • 5 of 5

Sandpiper Haven is very much a place of refuge that provides peace and relaxation for more than just it's namesake. Myself, husband, 18 month old, dad and brother came here for a 3 night Father's Day trip. We were all blown away by the beauty and cleanliness of this property and ALL OF THE AMENITIES. We literally were provided every single thing we needed (+ some) for our stay. The attention to detail is obvious and the explicit instructions, helpful hints and books packed with referrals for anything you'd like to do or eat were all so helpful.

It is really special that Julie and Peter allow the use of their kayaks and row boat. My brother did some fishing and my dad and I took the kayaks out for a paddle almost every day. We also grilled daily and used the fire pit every night. We were struck by the landscaping and overall feeling of the property - the layout is perfect and feels very private even though there are a couple close neighbors and the house is right off of a road. Lastly, I was a bit nervous about bringing our young child with us because she is at age that she wants to touch and examine everything. But, we easily put up anything we felt might break and supplemented with the many awesome bins of blocks, toys, etc. provided. The portacrib and washer dryer were also very helpful for bringing children along!

We will definitely be booking again, but potentially Julie and Peter's other property now that we know the kind of "innkeepers" these two are. Thank you!!

Owner's Response: Dear Emily, Thank you so much for taking the time and posting such a wonderful and glowing review, and we are really pleased that your family enjoyed your Father's Day Weekend here. We are glad you got to get out in the boats and hope your brother had success fishing too! We appreciate your noticing and enjoying the extra things provided. Our goal is to have a home WE can visit ourselves without worrying about all those little things. So we figure Guests will enjoy that and appreciate that too. Thanks again and come visit at our new property, Sunset Beach Haven, when you get the chance, too (or back to Sandpiper Haven). - All Our Best, Julie and Peter

Neat, clean and comfortable beach house

  • 5 of 5

We needed a quiet, comfortable place for rest and recreation. The Sandpiper Haven was a perfect setting for what we had in mind. The house was very welcoming inside and outside. It seemed every window had a beautiful view of either the waterfront or lovely gardens. The notes/labels left for information or instructions on how to work things (example: DVD player)was very helpful. The Sandpiper Haven is a jewel of a place and we were fortunate to have found it! The quietness made us feel very peaceful and relaxed. Although the weather did interfere with us being able to use the boats and kayaks, regardless, there was plenty to do with birding and small hikes around the area. We also enjoyed visiting the delightful small town of Coupeville a few miles away. There was an annual water festival doing on with canoe racing and booths of food and crafts to buy. Our weekend at the beach house was unforgettable and we definitely recommend this piece of paradise.
