About Julie and Peter Mattson
We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.
Julie and Peter Mattson purchased this House in 2011
Why Julie and Peter Mattson chose Island County
We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.
What makes this House unique
Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory. And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town). Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

My wife and I spent a week at this beautiful cottage perched above a driftwood-strewn beach. Large widows make the most of the views. Very clean, comfortable, well appointed, good selection of local literature, maps, bird books, etc. Gas fireplace was great on blustery days. Peaceful, relaxing, chill.
Dear Andrew, Thank you so much for choosing our home and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Yes, I love to curl up and enjoy the views too out the big windows across the cove to the Olympics. It's one of my favorite spots on blustery days! We look forward to having you back again. -Julie and Peter
I have no complaints
This house is lovely. There were five of us: me, husband, son, daughter, daughter's friend. The kids are young teens. We had a nice relaxing couple of days at Sandpiper Haven. The house is very clean and well stocked with towels, cookware, blankets, etc... We went into Coupeville one day and also to Deception Pass. The second day we went to a family farm near Oak Harbor and hung out with baby goats. I mostly wanted to lay around and enjoy the view. Mission accomplished. If you would enjoy a cozy and clean getaway, I suggest you give this place a try!
Perfect little house
We had a wonderful time at this property. Fully stocked with just about everything you'll need, including toys, board games, puzzles, books. The inside of the house is bright and felt roomy for our family of four. If you have toddlers or school aged kids then check out Fort Nugent Park 7 mins north, or Christopher's in Coupeville for lunch. Julie and Peter were very responsive and wonderful hosts. There is a reason they've kept this place 5 stars. We hope to be back someday.
Dear Joel, Thank you so much for sharing your nice experience at our home. You and your family were wonderful Guests and we are so glad even your kids had fun and found all the toys and games, and you got out to enjoy some of the great parks and sites in the area. We'd love to have you back! -Julie and Peter
Amazing, clean and peaceful getaway
The entire experience at Sandpiper Haven was perfect!!
A charming house with a stunning view!
This house was perfect for our mini-vacation with friends from Vermont. It was well-situated and very quiet at night. The views of the cove were wonderful, with sunrise and sunset being particularly stunning. The birds were fun to watch, as well as the harbor seal.
The house was well-appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed and the owners have clearly worked to make sure extra supplies were provided. The gas fireplace was great: cozy with no fuss! The two nearby towns are close enough for convenience and the hiking options were numerous.
All in all, it was a great get-away spot!
More than 5 stars!
We loved everything about this place. EVERYTHING !
The location and setting are fantastic. We enjoyed waking up to the views of Penn Cove. Sunrise to Sunset you will love it. The home is fully equipped. It has all one needs to feel just like home. We can't wait to come back. Julie and Peter are fabulous hosts. There are not enough superlatives to describe our stay. Short distances to all Whidbey has to offer and more. When we toured the area from Anacortes to Langley, we could not wait to get back to Sandpiper Haven. Thank you for everything!
Dear Vickie and Chris, Thank you again your stay, and then extending it after arrival! And we can't thank you enough for your kind words. We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves and your words warm our hearts. It's really our goal to create a space folks want to come back to time and time again :). Looking forward to your return visit - Julie and Peter
