Please watch the video we made showing the cabin and area. The link is located in the top left corner of the cover photo, "VIDEO"
The cabin sits 100 metres from the beach in a private off the road garden setting at the edge of the jungle. We are 3 km from town centre, a $1 taxi ride or an easy 15 minute bike ride. We are conveniently located near the 'Y' in the road where it splits towards Paunch/Bluff beaches on the coast road and towards Bocas del Drago on the interior road. The 'Y' is a small community mixed with locals and ex-pats.
The cabin is 2 floor 24x16 (7m X 5m). The bedrooms are on the 2nd floor with a 1/2 bath. Each room has a double bed with orthopedic mattress and wall fan.
The monkey room looks look out into various fruit trees with a filtered view to the beach. The sloth room(smaller) looks out over the farm and the tree tops towards the jungle. Both rooms have a reading light and open closets. There is floor space in the bedrooms for extra guests mattresses.
Down stairs is a large tile counter kitchen with a 4 burner stove, double sink and a refrigerator. The kitchen is equipped with a blender, toaster and juicer as well as all the pots, pans and utensils you will need. There is a bar counter top separating the kitchen from the dining area and an Lshaped bench and a dining table. Opposite of the dining area is a 8x12 living room with a couch, hammock and rocking chair. And finishing off the first floor is a small storage room that acts as the lockup room for your valuables.
The main bathroom is 10 feet from the front door, a bath house is what it is..It has a hot shower, toilet, sink. We have a washing machine we share with our guests.
All the posts and beams are made from round wood poles. There are no windows like you may be used to, just screens to keep the bugs out. There is no AC. The house is in a relatively shady spot and the screen windows allow good air flow..On a hot sunny day the bedrooms upstairs are unpleasant from about midday until 430 or so. Downstairs stays pleasant even on a real scorcher..There is a wall fan downstairs too which adds to the freshness. It is cool at night and normally quiet except for the buzz of the jungle and sounds of the waves breaking.
Off the front of the house is a 16x20 covered patio with a cement floor. Excellent bird and wildlife viewing!!! The patio is surrounded by flowers, coconut and other fruit trees, palms and bananas filled with birds and butterflies. A family of howler monkeys are regular visitors and the random sloth can be spotted. We keep chickens in a coop NO ROOSTER!! We have a dog and a cat as well who you will meet. We also have a large green house and veggie garden which we share with our guests. We live simply and try to keep expenses and impact down riding bikes and growing food.
We live across a small creek on the same property and are happy to help our guests as needed. We can help you to arrange tours, kayaks, scuba trips, bird watching and animal viewing, etc. and make suggestions about all there is to do and see in the islands and elsewhere in Panama. I am a 14 year resident of Bocas.
We hope to attract guests who will appreciate the cabin in its natural setting. Photographers, bird watchers, gardeners, musicians, divers, surfers, etc..Bocas is gifted with such a rich diversity of plant, animal and night life.. We hope you will come and enjoy it with us.
2 beach cruiser style bicycles are included.
We operate a small veterinary clinic on the same property helping our 4-legged friends.
There is also a 400sf dedicated music studio here on the property. It was built with soundproof walls thus it does not disturb the cabins peace and quiet. Musicians of all levels are encouraged to come stay, practice, teach, rehearse and record. Please contact me about studio use scenarios and the equipment we have.
If someone has a special skill set we will consider work trades to mutually benefit each other. ( Veterinarians and musicians especially!)
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions you may have. Si hablo espanol.. Gracias..

I am originally a West Coast gringo who sailed the Caribbean for some years. I moved to Bocas 14 years ago. Sailing has given way to island life with my Panamanian wife Gloria. She is a Veterinary Doctor and we operate the only animal clinic here in the islands helping our 4 legged friends. We both enjoy observing wildlife (especially birds) and photography. Recording and preserving Caribbean music is my latest passion.
Lucas purchased this cabin in 2005
I bought the land and built the house. It was ideal for me being close enough to the center to ride a bike yet far enough out that you don't feel the busy pace of town. The large lot has given us the room to plant and grow allot of our own food. We also have planted many flowering ornamentals which attract countless birds from the neighboring forrest.
There is a dedicated music studio here on the property. Musicians are encouraged to come stay!! The studio was built with soundproof walls and does not affect the peace and quiet of the compound.
You will love the sounds of the waves crashing and the songs of the birds at day break. We are at the edge of the jungle so the colorful garden pulls in countless birds and a family of howler monkeys are regular visitors.
We share the bounty of the garden with our guests. Lot´s of coconut trees too so you can drink real coconut water. We have a rain catchment tank that we collect our drinking water from.
And of course the ping pong table..
Our stay at Lucas and Gloria's place was more than amazing!! We decided to make a last minute trip to Bocas from Puerto Viejo. We planned to stay for only 4 nights, but loved it so much, we had to extend to a week, and then really wished we had time for a month or two. Lucas and Gloria were easily able to accommodate our family of 5 and they were such wonderful hosts. The house was very clean, everyone was comfortable and we had plenty of space. Our kids absolutely loved it here! The hammock in the living room was a hit with everybody. We got to see monkeys up close every day, and a lot of cool birds we had never seen. One of our favorite parts were the coconut trees! We absolutely loved the fresh coconut water and coconut meat every day. And to be able to get fresh eggs from the hens was great as well. We were also thankful that we were able to do our laundry when we needed. We loved the location- far enough from town so we weren't in the middle of parties and crowds, but close enough to get there easily when we needed to. Lucas also arranged for a boat tour with a local guy and Gloria called a taxi for us when we needed to leave. They had great advice for us on beaches and cool local spots to go to. We definitely got a lot more out of our stay than we would have in a hotel! So thankful that we found this gem!
my friend and i stayed at lucas and gloria for 4 nights and it was a great experience overall! we felt at home the moment we got there. the cabin is cozy, clean, we slept like babies and we really enjoyed hanging out on the patio in the morning or for the apéro. beautiful gardens around and the place is very close to bocas town or the beaches (approx. 15 min. by bike either way), yet secluded enough to experience to real bocas. lucas and gloria are super hosts with a very positive attitude and open minded. thanks for this great stay in your little piece of heaven :)
Our family 2 adults and 2 children ages 10 and 7 had the pleasure to stay in this delightful cabin in Bocas in November 2014. This was the perfect place for our family to stay, it gave us a lot of space to cook and enjoy the jungle. We love adventure filled and active vacations and this was the perfect location for us. We especially loved exploring the island by bikes which was a lovely option provided by Lucas. Our kids loved to spend time with Lucas and Gloria and the chickens and dogs and cat. Lucas chopped coconuts right out of the trees in the yard for the children to enjoy. My husband enjoyed visiting Lucas's music studio and taking a CD home with us. Lucas was great at suggesting wonderful restaurants, arranged a great snorkel tour for us, told us all the places to search for monkeys and sloths, and gave great biking directions to deserted beaches and great swimming areas. We really enjoyed visting the Bastimentos Island and visiting Up The Hill chocolate farm and eating at Alvin's which was a very enjoyable water taxi away. In Bocas we enjoyed wonderful coffee at the new Coffee Shop (close to town) and eating at Refugio. November was a great time to visit Bocas, great weather and almost no tourists, we would highly recommend visting at this time and staying at this great cabin.
My girlfriend and I just got back from a one week stay in Bocas and we loved this place. Lucas and Gloria were great hosts. Lucas knows all about the island and was a huge help in recommending things to do during out trip. He scheduled a chocolate farm tour for us, had bikes available at the property, recommended a couple of restaurants that we loved, and even set up a tour guide in Panama City for us to kill time during our layover on the trip home. He even made us breakfast our last morning there. Location was perfect. You can hear the ocean and wildlife at night. Getting into town is a 5 minute cab ride (cabs are all over the place) or an easy 20 minute bike ride. Great local feel to the area around the house that we really loved. Plus the only brewery in Bocas is right down the street! The house is in great shape. Clean, everything works, and honestly the pictures on this site don't do it justice. We were very impressed and will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Bocas.
Our month’s stay at Lucas’ cabin was great: great location, great price, great host. It was easy to spend a lot of time on the patio, with wonderful birds and monkeys putting on a show. Lucas is a very skilled bird watcher and loves to share his knowledge. Some nicer outdoor furniture would be a big plus for even more hanging out.
Inside was more than adequate for the two of us, although things might get a little tight with a crowd larger than 3 or 4. Again, a furniture upgrade would be nice, like a couple of comfy reading chairs.
Great to be close to town but far enough away that it was nice and quiet.
Lucas and Gloria were always there with advice, recommendations, and even some fresh eggs. Coco the dog and Franklin the cat were always welcome, entertaining guests as well.
My husband and I enjoyed sixteen wonderful days of relaxation and adventure at Lucas' cabin. You can do as much or as little as you like. Waking in the morning to the sight of a howler monkey munching on leaves outside your window is a real treat! The rental bikes were wonderful and enabled us to try a different restaurant every day, although favourites were Casbah and Maracuya. We also used them to ride to Playa Bluff and Estrella Beach, my favourite beach, although taxis were also very inexpensive. We loved the fresh eggs from the friendly chickens, and Franklin the cat is quite a character, as is Coco the dog. Gloria's surprises of soursop or coco freezies, bread pudding, or pancakes were greatly appreciated. Lucas took us on a nature/birding walk one morning and he showed us more than we have seen anywhere in Panama. My only suggestion is to establish a definite price for your nature walks, because they are truly excellent. The best part of our stay was knowing that if we needed anything, Lucas and Gloria were there to cheerfully help us!
We are located just a 7 minute walk from a 25 acre botanical garden (Finca los Monos) that has hundreds (possibly thousands) of both native and non native plants. About a 10 minute walk brings you to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Station. Both places offer guided tours. The birding and wildlife viewing in Bocas is excellent. Here in our garden you will see many species and I can arrange a naturalist/bird guide to take you deeper into the jungle. The Snyder banana canal is a must see for enthusiastic birders. As well as bird island, hope to nesting Tropic Birds. The surf break at Paunch is an easy bike ride or a $2 taxi ride..
