|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Our apartment is located in the Castro, one of the famous neighborhoods in the city. The living room gets good natural light and the windows allow you to have a nice view of the city. Our furniture is cozy and guests are welcome to use the kitchen, although we recommend you to try the restaurants in the city. If you have leftovers, our dining room accommodates 4 people. After a long day exploring, you can enjoy a shower. Sometimes there is a telescope, so you can look at the stars from our window. The bedroom is in the back of the apartment, it is usually less noisy than the rest of the house. We are located one block away from Corona Heights Park, a nice meadow to enjoy the sun and have a picnic.
The Castro is famous for its sidewalk with rainbows, plenty of bars, cabarets, the Castro Theatre (where you can sometimes sing along to movies!), bakeries, restaurants and good food and entertainment, especially for the gay community. This is the friendliest are for the LGBT community. Also, it is usually sunny as it doesn't get as much fog as other parts of the city.
It is easy to get here. The F line starts from the corner of Castro and Market; it's the line with vintage street cars. You can also take the underground, lines K, L, and M. Bus 24 stops right in front of the apartment.

I waited a while before leaving this review, because I was afraid I would be unfair if I wrote it right away. Let's start with the positives -- the location. It's near public transportation and has a great little market down the street. The apartment also has a nice view and was clean.
As for the not so positive -- The two convertible twin beds were awful -- one was actually broken. We found an air mattress in the closet and were able to use that, but there were no sheets for it. The bed in the master bedroom was hardly better -- the mattress was sunken and awful. We ended up going to Target and buying a mattress topper, as well as sheets for the air mattress and pillow cases for the pillows, as there were a number of pillows with no cases. (Wish I could post photos here so you could see for yourself.)
There were exactly 4 bath towels for the 4 guests. No wash cloths. No hand towels. No toilet paper. No soap. Nothing.
The living room did have a lovely view, but no blinds to shield the sun. By the afternoon the heat was unbearable. We opened the windows at night and woke up covered in mosquito bites.
While it's not the property owner's fault, the upstairs neighbors partied ALL NIGHT LONG.
Parking was hard to come by, despite the management company's assurance that it was plentiful. We ended up paying $30 a day to park in a hospital parking lot 4 or 5 blocks away.
This property was a huge disappointment.
Thank goodness we only stayed for 3 days. I had to contact the management company, Pillow, the first day that we arrived. One of the convertible beds was broken and there was no hand towels or wash cloths in the unit. "Pillow" said they would contact the owner. My 6' son had to sleep on the two seater couch for the night. I called a couple of times the next day and the management company promised they would have an air mattress delivered to the apartment. They could not help us with the hand towels or wash cloths as they are not typically provided (?). I have never stayed in a VRBO which did not have hand towels or wash cloths! When we returned after our evening tour of Alcatraz, there was no air mattress. I called again and they stated that someone had been dispatched earlier. We were exhausted and in need of some sleep. At 11:30 pm a delivery person was at the door with the air mattress. I don't generally leave bad reviews, but this is the worst VRBO that I've stayed at. Readers should take note of the amount of time between reviews. This is my 2nd attempt at leaving a review and I feel that all negative reviews are not posted.
The apartment is in a perfect location and offers stunning views of the city, but the upstairs neighbour ruins the experience of staying there. At times he played his music so loud that the walls were literally shaking. I had to ask him to be quiet twice in two days and then complain to the property manager. We actually thought about leaving and loosing our money to stay at a hotel instead. Eventually the music was turned off, but we could always hear the upstairs neighbour stomping around with a large number of guests. If you prefer peace and relaxation, I wouldn't recommend staying here. Otherwise, it was actually a great place. Such a shame really.
279 Castro St is a great location; fantastic views; comfortable & spacious for 2 people; nice bed/bedroom; new bathroom; old style kitchen with limited utensils/appliances; noisy upstairs neighbour with loud music at weekends; apartment had not been cleaned on our arrival but was eventually cleaned later in the day nonetheless disappointing on our arrival after travelling 10 hours + from London!!
This apartment was beautiful and the location cannot be beat! It was convenient to everything in the Castro. However, there was no toilet paper in the house when e arrived (not a single sheet!) which of course we didn't realize until someone was already going to the bathroom and needed it! There were two adts and two kids in our party, which we were charged for, but one of the twin beds was broken so we had to use the couch for sleeping. Only two tiny, thin pillows were on the king bed, and sheets were missing for the twin fold-outs (that should have been a red flag one was broken). Again, the location and views were incredible, though.
This apartment was every bit as good as advertised. Great location in the Castro - easy to get anywhere from there and close to great restaurants and bars. Kitchen is not fancy, but perfectly acceptable.
