About Klara Higgins

I am originally from New Jersey 30 minutes from New York City. I don't miss it one bit. Wahington is one of the most beautiful states. I have lived here for 35 years and if you love the outdoors this is the place.

Klara Higgins purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Klara Higgins chose Washington

My family has been coming to Curlew Lake for several years. We stayed at a small resort. The cabins were built in the 40's and not very comfortable. I new that this area was a place I wanted to come to whenever I could. One day while fishing we saw a for sale sign on the end of the dock. The owners invited us in and I new this was a special place. We made an offer and they accepted. When you arrive in Republic you feel like you have gone back in time. It is an old gold mining town and many of the buildings are original. The population is barely over 1000. I drive 3 hours to get there and it feels like 5 minutes. There are so many outdoor activities! It is sooo quiet at night all you here is the breeze. This place is my little piece of heaven. I have been all around the world but my heart is here.

Quiet retreat on Curlew Lake. Everything you need is there while you get away from it all.

Average and Unexceptional

  • 3 of 5

We did know Lake Curlew when we decided to spend a week on it in this large cabin. The lake is thick with milefoil and other vegetation as well as algae. The cabin is not on the main part of the lake, but on a small northernmost arm and consequently the water is stagnant and mucky. The cabin is on a small lot that slopes to the dock and lakefront; there are a few ponderosas and a screen of shrubbery that obscures much of the view of the lake. The most remarkable feature of this rental is that there is absolutely not one scrap of information about the cabin, appliences, near activities, etc. I had to rumage around in all the drawers to find an instruction book on the coffee maker, a type that I had never seen before and had no idea how to operate. I can't imagine how more than six people would be comfortable here. There are just four chairs at the dining table, one small bathroom, and the so-called loft is suitable for average-sized adults only in the center of the ridgepole; the ceiling slopes steeply to about a foot above the floor at the wall.

Nice house but needs some things.

  • 3 of 5

The house is very spacious, attractive and comfortable. There is no sign or street number on the road to indicate its obscure driveway from the main road.

The approximately 5 large trees on the property are very badly in need of trimming both for safety, esthetics and for views . The house is basically well equipped although it could do with some sharper knives , pan lids and wine glasses.

The lake is beautiful but very drastically afflicted with "sea weed" ,making swimming very un-appealing and potentially hazardous.

The dock is in good repair although there is no real path to it ,just a rather steep dirt slope .

A surprising lack was that of ANY written instructions about the property, equipment , etc.

The weather was perfect and we enjoyed our week on Lake Curlew.

Absolutely the most beautiful place to stay. The owner provides everything just bring food and drink. The grandkids had so much fun fishing off the dock and the cabin was so roomy and welcoming. We are coming back next year!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

The photos just don't do this place justice. It was a perfect place for three couples to spend time on Curlew Lake. Everything seemed pretty new, in good repair and very clean. All the beds were all comfortable and the common living area (living, dining, kitchen) is very spacious. The loft is huge, nice place to get away and read. Wifi was fantastic. We were even connected on the dock. We thought having one bathroom would be a problem but it wasn't really. There was always the port-a-can in emergencies and that was very clean. We spent most of our time on the deck and the dock. The house is in a great location on a little protected cove. The guys did a lot of fishing and caught many small perch and some bass. There were enough keepers to make a meal but nothing really bragworthy. We used the paddle boat and one kayak. Both worked out great for fishing and just boating around the lake. We found the second kayak paddle broken. Klara said she would be replacing it. There is a very good rail trail nearby for walking. One direction takes you across the lake on a trestle and the other takes you off into the fields and marshes. Both very scenic. Lots of good birding. My dog was with us and he loved the place too, but he wishes there were a beach for him to wade into the water. He learned that he likes boating but will not swim off a dock. Other fun things we did were fossil hunting in Republic, visit to the Republic Brewery and hiking in the Kettle range. We went up Gibralter Mtn not far from Republic. Beautiful views and we had it to ourselves. Overall, a great trip. I hope to return to Curlew Lake again and stay in Klara's Pine Cabin.

Pine Cabin is located 20 minutes north of Republic, Washington State. The Ferry County Airport is located on Highway 21, 6 miles northeast of Republic. There are two helipads on the west side of the airport. So drive or fly in!

Ferry County has over a hundred years of mining history. In 1896 gold was discovered and ever since, Ferry County has been the biggest gold producer in the state of Washington.

Visit the Republic Brewery. On sight brewery located at the old fire hall downtown. Their Big Mischief Porter was awarded a gold medal at the Washington Brewers Festival this last June!. The brewery is fun and friendly.

Stonerose Interpretive Center and Eocene Fossil Site. Located in downtown Republic. Dig for fossils with your kids. The staff will show you the best way to dig and find fossils. This dig site is known for the earliest record of the rose and maple family.Check out stonerose

Curlew Washington is a few miles north on HWY 21 on the Kettle River. It was once considered a ghost town. Barrel Derby Days Festival is the first Sunday in June. Guess how long it takes for a barrel to travel from Midway Bridge to Town Bridge. This annual event gets it's roots from Prohibition bootleggers. They filled barrels with whiskey and floated them from Canada to the. US on the Kettle River. Afterwards you can enjoy a lazy afternoon float tubing on the river.

Built in 1903 in Curlew the Ansorge Hotel has many of it's original furnishings and visitors are welcome to take a tour.

The Antique Car and Truck Museum has a wonderful collection of antique automobiles. For example a 1925 Howard Cooper.
