I am originally from New Jersey 30 minutes from New York City. I don't miss it one bit. Wahington is one of the most beautiful states. I have lived here for 35 years and if you love the outdoors this is the place.
Klara Higgins purchased this cabin in 2013
My family has been coming to Curlew Lake for several years. We stayed at a small resort. The cabins were built in the 40's and not very comfortable. I new that this area was a place I wanted to come to whenever I could. One day while fishing we saw a for sale sign on the end of the dock. The owners invited us in and I new this was a special place. We made an offer and they accepted. When you arrive in Republic you feel like you have gone back in time. It is an old gold mining town and many of the buildings are original. The population is barely over 1000. I drive 3 hours to get there and it feels like 5 minutes. There are so many outdoor activities! It is sooo quiet at night all you here is the breeze. This place is my little piece of heaven. I have been all around the world but my heart is here.
The house is great. There was quite a bit of snow on the ground when we arrived, so I was a little concerned with the driveway. Thankfully I had a 4-wheel drive vehicle, so no problems there. However it would have been a bit more challenging in a car or 2-wheel drive. Klara did have the driveway plowed and the walkways shoveled prior to our arrival which was really helpful.
The kitchen was pretty well stocked, which was nice. We were there for a couple weeks and it was nice to be able to cook at the house.
The neighbors were pretty quiet. I would imagine that the property is even more fun in the summer with the deck and grills and the lake just a few feet away. I would definitely stay here again.
Five men came to ice fish during the first week of February. It was cold. It snowed just before our arrival and again while we were there. The fishing was great! The catching was adequate. The cabin was perfect for our group and I can't imagine anyone finding fault with it. The huge kitchen made meal preparation a real pleasure. The beds were as comfortable as home and the wood pile allowed us to keep the wood stove going as much as we wanted. We will definitely be looking forward to a chance to visit when the ground is bare and the temperature a bit warmer. Keep up the good work Klara!
We loved staying at this cabin on Lake Curlew! We loved that it was a quiet cove, where we felt comfortable letting our children kayak, boat, and fish safely! There was plenty of bass and perch to catch! The house was beautiful, well taken care of, and furnished with all we needed for our vacation. Our children want to move to this house - mom and dad wouldn't mind either! Within a half mile there is a walking trail that you could bike or walk on back to Republic, this was a nice option for us. We hope to go again.
Quiet retreat on Curlew Lake. Everything you need is there while you get away from it all.
We did know Lake Curlew when we decided to spend a week on it in this large cabin. The lake is thick with milefoil and other vegetation as well as algae. The cabin is not on the main part of the lake, but on a small northernmost arm and consequently the water is stagnant and mucky. The cabin is on a small lot that slopes to the dock and lakefront; there are a few ponderosas and a screen of shrubbery that obscures much of the view of the lake. The most remarkable feature of this rental is that there is absolutely not one scrap of information about the cabin, appliences, near activities, etc. I had to rumage around in all the drawers to find an instruction book on the coffee maker, a type that I had never seen before and had no idea how to operate. I can't imagine how more than six people would be comfortable here. There are just four chairs at the dining table, one small bathroom, and the so-called loft is suitable for average-sized adults only in the center of the ridgepole; the ceiling slopes steeply to about a foot above the floor at the wall.
The house is very spacious, attractive and comfortable. There is no sign or street number on the road to indicate its obscure driveway from the main road.
The approximately 5 large trees on the property are very badly in need of trimming both for safety, esthetics and for views . The house is basically well equipped although it could do with some sharper knives , pan lids and wine glasses.
The lake is beautiful but very drastically afflicted with "sea weed" ,making swimming very un-appealing and potentially hazardous.
The dock is in good repair although there is no real path to it ,just a rather steep dirt slope .
A surprising lack was that of ANY written instructions about the property, equipment , etc.
The weather was perfect and we enjoyed our week on Lake Curlew.

Curlew Washington is a few miles north on HWY 21 on the Kettle River. It was once considered a ghost town. Barrel Derby Days Festival is the first Sunday in June. Guess how long it takes for a barrel to travel from Midway Bridge to Town Bridge. This annual event gets it's roots from Prohibition bootleggers. They filled barrels with whiskey and floated them from Canada to the. US on the Kettle River. Afterwards you can enjoy a lazy afternoon float tubing on the river.
