The hiring of a car or moped is the easiest way to get around. The Villa is located in the quieter part of Koh Samui, unlike the busy north of the island. Villa Sapphire has outstanding ocean views and where you have this, you have a hill to climb. The villa is positioned in an outstandingly beautiful location, and is a 250 mtr length of steep hill from the entrance at Sitara Retreat. We strongly recommend the use of a four wheel drive, or if you are a very confident rider, a moped, which we can arrange for you, and have waiting at the villa on your arrival. It is a condition of Sitara Retreat that if you hire a car it will need to be a four wheel drive. Once you have booked we can assist in the hire of these vehicles at a competitive price.
With the villa being located in a quieter part of the island, driving can be a more pleasurable experience. To go to the beach, restaurants, local attractions etc, we do strongly recommend the hiring of your own transport. If you do not feel to be a confident driver, there are several private hire car companies (of which we can give you telephone numbers) that can pick you up at the entrance of Sitara, which is a 4 or 5 minute walk down the hill.
There is private parking for a vehicle at the Villa.
We have been awarded Superhost status and the Certificate of Excellence for Villa Sapphire and also for each of my 7 additional villas on Koh Samui.
There is still the feel here in the south on Koh Samui of over 20 years ago, unlike the north of the island which is more commercialized and crowded. We are frequently told by guests they find the Thai people in this southern part of the island extremely hospitable, and welcoming. In the north where it is far more crowded and touristy on the island there is not always the opportunity to discover the true warmth and charm of the local people.
Within 5-10 drive from the Villa there is the charming area of Laem Sett, with fine restaurants serving delicious Thai and European food, small coffee shop, 3 mini-marts for your daily needs, several laundry shops, couple of small bars, two well reputed massage shops, Yoga, taxi services and a local travel agency. Within this area there is also local Laem Sett beach, which is quiet and secluded. Here one can enjoy and admire a beautiful sunset, and see the local fishermen with their long tailed boats come into shore. Located on the beach is the rustic Thai style Cool Bar when you can enjoy good food and a drink whilst soaking up the tranquil atmosphere. Also close by is Sha Sha Resort, Centara Villas Resort and Samui Orchid which opens its doors to non residents and has many facilities to enjoy, including smart restaurants and bars. Less than 10 mins away by car you have the fishing village of Baan Hua Thanon where fresh fish, fruit and vegetables are sold daily at the local market and also the home of several small local shops, a doctors surgery, 24 hour Seven-Eleven grocery shop with ATM and a Chinese Temple. Lamai is a beach side tourist town a 10 min drive from the Villa. There are many shops lining the streets offering locally made souvenirs and clothes. When the sun goes down the streets come alive with lights and music from the night market and variety of bars while the restaurants serve excellent Thai and western dishes in the town and on the beach. Thai boxing is also popular and Lamai has its own professional and amateur boxing ring. Nearby to the villa many of the island's main attractions are less than 10 mins drive away, which include Namsuang Waterfalls, Crocodile Farm, Aquarium, Tiger Zoo, Butterfly Garden, Elephant trekking, The Grandmother Grandfather Rocks, horse riding, water sports, cookery classs, a snake farm and many temples, amongst others. Just remember nowhere on the island is more than 35 minutes away. The southern part of the island, where the villa is located, remains pretty much unspoiled, especially compared to the north. It still has that rustic charm appeal that the whole of Samui boasted years ago. The beaches on the south remain pretty much undeveloped, due mainly to the shallow coastline. If you like to explore you can still find areas where you have the beach to yourself, and never too far away will be a rustic Thai restaurant where you can enjoy true authentic local dishes.
