Spyglass House offers a spectacular view of captivating Ocotal Beach. A 10 minute walk to the ocean or just step into your infinity pool. Out on the deck you'll see the fishing boats or whales with your morning coffee.

Down the palm lined driveway and through the gated entrance, there is a rock garden and more palm trees. Enter the main house through the beaded doorway to the living area with the warm ocean breeze blows through.

The deck which overlooks Ocotal Bay and you can see clear cross to Roca Bruha, where there is some of the best surfing in Central America. You may also spot the whales coming in the bay to feed.

If you are into indoor views, there is a giant plasma screen TV for your entertainment and Firestick to access your Netflix account.

This house is perfect for a family or 2 couples. Bedrooms at each end, with king size beds in both. The west wing provides an office desk and access to the deck. You may well be visited by the howler mono's (monkeys).

There is an outdoor kitchen with running water and propane BBQ next next to the patio and infinity pool. Dip your feet in while waiting to turn the fresh fish on the BBQ.

The indoor kitchen and eating area look out to the ocean where you can take in each evenings spectacular sunsets.

Each room has its own air conditioning unit, for your individual comfort.

As you drive down to the house you enjoy the morning sun without it beating down on you till midday.

About Sterling Baker

As I was approaching retirement, I decided that Ocotal was a little piece of heaven, where I intended to spend the rest of my life.

As a building contractor myself I worked with the designer on the location and optimal view of the ocean for both the main house and the guest house over the much needed carport.

I love gardening, as you can see from the pictures of the house.

I completed the house in 2003 and have been living in the guest house with the sliding doors open to hear the soothing ocean at night.

I scooter into town in the morning to the Panaderia (bakery) to grab a coffee and people watch.

In the afternoon I tend to my gardens

Why Sterling Baker chose Cantón Carrillo

Ocotal Beach and the gated community we live in is 10 minutes down the Gold Coast from Coco Beach, a hopping town during the high season. There is great and affordable food stores, bakeries and financial institutions. However, as you drive beyond Coco to Ocotal, you enter your own little bit of heaven. As you come through the gates you can see the ocean, just minutes away. Take a u-turn up the hill and you climb, and climb and climb, until you are almost at the top and you are at your house.

I oversaw construction and paid attention to the details, which is why I have the Million Dollar view! Walk around the total estate 3km in about an hour to enjoy all of the views, while really get a workout.

I also head down to the beach in the afternoon for a swim and a run.

Just a 30 minute drive from the Liberia International Airport (LIR). Direct flights from Canada.

Close to the Congo Trail for zip lining, 4 wheeling and another spectacular beach.

Head north and you can enjoy the 4 Seasons Hotel 18 hole golf course.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Do not misconstrue the rainy season at Ocotal Beach. For a very great majority of the time it only means that you have blazing sun through the early afternoon and it often comes back before the sun sets. You will actually appreciate the break from the sun.

May to September you do not have to contend with the huge influx of winter tourists, so you can call the place your own! I had one tenant in 2014 from August to December and they had only 3 days where the sun did not come out at all

There is a full laundry room on site for longer stays. The pool is fully secluded from all other properties and the road to the property. Huge big screen television for those who prefer to just chill in front of the tube.

Stunning Views

We spent 10 days here at Spyhouse and just loved it there. Gorgeous house and pool with the most beautiful views over the bay of Ocotal.

Sterling was very helpful with information about where and what to see. We also rented his truck which is a must in Costa Rica having a car as you will get to see so much more. Hoping to return again soon!

What a beautiful Home! Spectacular view that never gets old. Refreshing pool that was in constant use. Felt very safe and comfortable there. The best was Sterling, our host. What a generous soul. He did whatever he could to make our stay enjoyable. Thank you Sterling.

Generous Owner, gorgeous view, and refreshing pool

I loved having Sterling (the owner) nearby. I enjoyed getting to know him and Bobby (his dog). Sterling is a kind hearted soul who is a very interesting person. We enjoyed taking him out to thank him for his generosity. He picked us up from the airport, took us back, and let us use his truck the week we were there. Who does that? Sterling does that. We paid him upon arrival to the villa.

The view is spectacular. We would get up every morning and sit out on the patio chilling. We would have our coffee and look out to see if we could spot the whales. We did see them a couple of times! We could hear the Howler monkeys but never saw them. The crazy blue Jay would come and try to be part of our morning ritual. I'll even miss that Blue Jay! There were a lot of birds around and I think I saw a Costa Rican Raccoon too!

After our morning coffee and breakfast, we would usually go to Coco for Happy Hour at Z's or Lizard lounge. Happy hour is 11-7 and the drinks are good and big! We went to Coco every day for something or another. We met Brett at Marlin Del Rey tours at the bank so we went to his shop in town to book the Marlin Catamaran sunset party boat (so much fun) and the River boat pottery tour (once was enough but if you want to see monkeys and alligators, go).

We ate a lot of places. La Flor Delys on the way to town from The Spyglass house was a favorite. The food and presentation are great (only open for breakfast and lunch). We ate at Father Roosters twice. Great ambience, even in low season. Great fries and Shrimp kabobs! We ate at Picante. Nice view. We went to Papagayo seafood and the pizza place a couple doors down. Papagayo's seafood was great. Pizza was nice and hot. We loved the company at the pizza place too. We ate at Citron which had great food, although it wasn't very Costa Rican. It was excellent though! We went to The Lookout (go for the sunset) and to Ginger's in Playa Hermosa with Sterling the night before we left. It was a wonderful evening of good food and even better company!

We took a day trip to Tamarindo. While we were glad we went for the day, we were also glad we did not stay in Tamarindo. My friend and I both agreed that we got lucky with Ocotal and Coco. Tamarindo is very touristy. I can't even imagine it during high season.

We would come back from our little excursions and enjoy the pool. The pool is very clean and well maintained. Sterling is the best host!

Simple Beautiful " WoW " Better then it shows

We stayed for a month Jan 15 to Feb 16th 2015...... this home has everything it show's and more... very nicely finished . The home the pool the sitting areas are all very well planned. The sunsets are awsome.... you have a great view from every room. Wake up looking out over Ocotal bay.... have coffee on the pool deck or the main deck off the living.... just fantastic !! The owner "Sterling " is a great person ... honest and very helpful . This home has a 180 degree view and Sterling has captured it all with the entire layout of the home. Minutes from a gym ... downtown Coco ..... beaches etc. We would highly recommend this property ..... it is well stocked everything you need . Thanks " Sterling " Bob / Nancy

spyglass house

We arrived in Playa Coco and stumbled across Robert Holtmans CR Properies office after a long day travelling and no place to stay. He showed us around a few rental properties in Coco and after explaining we wanted something a little more special he then quickly arranged us to view the spyglass house in nearby Ocotal. After looking around this place we agreed on a months rental. This place is a wonderful and private place to stay. It has two ensuite bedrooms with queen size very comfortable beds! There is aircon, wifi, cable tv, telephone and all mod cons as you would expect in this magnificent property which overlooks the bay in ocotal. There is a wonderful outdoor area with a BBQ and seating area and infinity pool where we spent many an evening watching the glorious sunset. A great place to stay If you are ever in this area.

The owner has been personally involved in the construction of this property requiring many years of patience and attention to details. Built on a seemingly impossibly steep slope near the ridge line, using 62 concrete pylons going 10 meters into the rock, this house isn't going anywhere. The 'broken tile' walking steps show a lot of patience in arraigning the pieces by hand. The balcony hand rails are teak wood requiring a weekly application of treatment to maintain their rich look. there is no walls facing the view instead there are floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall plate glass windows so as to not obstruct the view in any way. The cabinets through out the home are crafted of teak also with attention given to clean lines and symmetry. The finishing touch of carefully selected pieces finish the home nicely.
