Xanadu is the closest you can be to the ocean without taking a cruise vacation. As you arrive on location, driving over the bluff, you are confronted with a panoramic view of water. This exclusive custom (ICF) constructed property is brand new with luxury appointments both in and out. Great for those who want to relax on the New Brunswick quarried slate patio watching I fishermen directly out front in the early morning, whales, seals and eagles during the day or Hawaiian like sunsets, shooting stars and satellites during the night. To the discerning chef, the kitchen has it all. If swimming is your thing, the water at the beach has been termed the 'Warmest North of the Carolina's'.
The area is great for the active individual interested in water sports, hiking at Cape George(lighthouse site which inspired Robert Munsch book of the same name) or cycling around 'The miniature Cabot Trail' of the Cape.
The town of Antigonish, site of Highland Games and St. FX University, is only 15 minutes away. Here you can access any amenities you may require. The town also hosts an 18 hole golf course. For the serious golf enthusiast, the world class Cabot Links Golf Course is a 2 hour scenic drive away.

My wife and I chose this location as it is only a 2 hour drive to Halifax Airport and it was one of the few properties on that shore where we could gain such access to the ocean with a house/cottage.
My wife and I both enjoy cooking and this was never far from our minds when we designed the kitchen for Xanadu. The area is open concept with high beamed ceilings and no matter where you stand, all you see is ocean. There are speaker systems both in and outside the living area, so you can have soft background music playing while you create dinner for the evening.
We stayed in Xanadu by the Sea for 8 nights in Early November (off season).
We chose the Cottage as a place to base ourselves for a week of Nova Scotia sightseeing, but also had to plan on having some bad/cold weather keeping us inside at that time of year. Xanadu by the Sea was perfect for us, having a great location on the water (and sunsets), plenty of places to drive to on our day-trips, and warm and cozy on the days we decided to stay at home and relax by the fire!
Paul was fantastic and answered all our questions promptly. We met just outside the airport for a coffee, got the keys and took advantage of his local knowledge to plan some of our excursions. The cottage had everything we needed, including plenty of firewood (thanks Paul), coffee maker, utensils, washing machine, TV, internet, etc... just buy your groceries and enjoy your stay.
We prefer to travel to places outside of the tourist season. Most tourist attractions were shut down by November, but there is still a lot to see and do and you can enjoy the beautiful sights with nobody else around. Antigonish has everything you need for dining, many distilleries and breweries are open year round and are happy to give private tours since there are no tour groups, and it's a great time to meet the locals in the small towns when you stop in for some lunch.
We didn't get the chance to sit out on the porch as we went sightseeing on the warm days, but I can certainly imagine relaxing out there in the summer, listening to the ocean or music.
Xanadu by the Sea is a place I would highly recommend and will certainly come back to for another getaway! Thanks again Paul for a wonder stay!
In August we (mom and 2 kids - 7 and 9) spent a week at Xanadu by the Sea. It was truly memorable.
The cottage is AMAZING and has every amenity you need (including an outdoor shower which was blissful in the morning sun). It's beautifully decorated in East Coast style and super comfortable. From the comfy beds to the big tub and the sprawling couches we really felt pampered (and relaxed!). The views are spectacular and with the big cottage windows and open concept layout you can see for miles from every angle. The cottage is perfectly situated for sunset. Having morning coffee (or sunset cocktails) on the patio or outdoor seating on the edge of the cliffs was breathtaking.
Heidi, Paul and Sidney are wonderful hosts and keep an immaculate property. They were so helpful, hospitable and full of East Coast spirit. We especially enjoyed our nights by the bonfire.
The beach was fantastic for kayaking, swimming, boogy-boarding and fishing. A highlight was catching Sea Bass right off the rock in-front of the cottage! The rocky coastline made for great hikes and hours of exploring and entertainment.
There is lots to discover in the area; great little towns, sandy beaches, lighthouses and more. Travelling around with our awesome tour guide, Sidney, was so much fun. Of special mention would be the 'secret' Rock she took us to that we spent hours jumping off of.
I also have to mention Bella. 'Best Dog Ever' as my son still calls her. We loved playing with her, throwing rocks in the water for her, and going for long kikes with her.
We had so many favorite/best experiences over the week and are looking forward to returning again next year. I highly recommend this property!
Our time at Xanadu by the sea, Paul and Heidi's oceanfront chateau, was absolutely magical!
From the time we pulled up into the driveway and caught a glimpse of the ocean until we walked into the spacious and beautifully appointed home, we were absolutely thrilled!
The views were breathtaking. We spent hours and hours on the patio watching the waves and the lobsterman. We were greeted with friendly kisses by Bella, their sweet golden retriever. And we enjoyed so much visiting their family when we arrived.
We were made to feel so comfortable and there was not one thing that was missing for a totally, enjoyable and relaxing stay.
We loved the music that was piped throughout the home and onto the spacious patio, as well as the Wi-Fi and satellite entertainment system.
The fireplace created a cozy, glowing ambience for evening unwinding.
We enjoyed the best fresh lobster we have ever eaten as Paul connected us with one of the local lobstermen… Yum!
We also had an amazing time walking along the beautiful, rocky beach picking up stunning pieces of granite at every turn. Our little girl, 7 years old, was in heaven....picking, throwing and painting rocks!
We drove the Cabot Trail and experienced absolutely, spectacular views of Cape Breton.
We also enjoyed shopping in Antigonish and some fabulous pizza from The Wheel… Tell Mike we said hi! Also, the Dreamcatcher deli and pub had the best chocolate chip cookies and muffins ever! Thanks Roseanne and Mike!
I could go on and on but you get the picture. We highly recommend this vacation spot for your Nova Scotia dream getaway.

Where do I begin about our stay at Zanadu? As you are driving down the hill to the driveway, you are greeted by green grass, flowers and beautiful roses surrounding the cottage with a backdrop of the Northumberland Strait. Zanadu has everything you would need, from sunrise in the morning, to awesome sunsets in the evening. It is just steps away from swimming, fishing off the rocks or kayaking along the shoreline. The kitchen, bath and bedrooms are so comfortable and well equipped..Taking a morning shower in the outdoor shower with the sun peeking in,and again after our afternoon swim was so refreshing. The sunroom, where you can escape to relax with a cup of coffee and watch the activity on and in the water, is so cozy.
I grew up in Antigonish and it was great to come home to see family and friends and catch up,once again. My friends were equally awed by the fantastic view and the cottage, as were my family.
Paul,Heidi,Sidney and Ann made us so welcome, Paul even went out in the kayak to catch some bait fish for my grandson so he could catch bass, which Paul deep fried for us. Yummy! "Bella" had a big part in teaching my dog, "Maggie" that the waters of Nova Scotia were a wonderful place to learn how to swim. I think Maggie loved "This Little Piece of Heaven", as much as my family and I did. Thank you Paul and Heidi, we'll be back!
You never know what to expect, but honestly it was an unbelievable week. From the grand welcome we received to the calm and peace of the surroundings - it was a vacation that surpassed any others we've taken. The unobstructed view is breathtaking and the piped in music to the outdoor patio made it so relaxing. The home is outfitted with everything you could possibly need and it appeared professionally decorated and comforting. Its too bad we couldn't make use of the fireplace (it was warm that week) but I bet curled up on a Fall evening it would be spectacular. Having the ensuite washer/dryer and clothesline was very convenient while on holiday. Don't forget to try the outdoor shower, it is private and the sun is very warming on your back! The property while secluded is still very accessible to Antigonish, New Glasgow and a short ride to Caribou if you wanted to catch the ferry to PEI. There are many opportunities for sightseeing in the area. Thank you to the MacLean family including Bella who greeted us every day, you were all very gracious and attentive. We will be back!
Absolutely beautiful... both the cottage and the setting/view! The cottage was just perfect - well-appointed, decorated, and so comfortable; even my 13 year-old son remarked how incredibly comfortable the beds were. Everything we could possible need was there. Paul and Heidi were so welcoming, and we also enjoyed some visits from their sweet dog, Bella. Words are not adequate to describe how much we enjoyed our stay, and we can't wait to return!
