A huge rock in front of the deck also provides a sitting area to enjoy this clear flowing stream as it journeys down the mountainside. This unique place has an unusual and fascinating history. It was never built to be a rental. The original builder was Terry Sanford, former Governor of North Carolina and U. S. Senator. This charming home served for many years as the summer home and family getaway for the Sanford family. Neighbors still recall how the Governor walked down the mountain each morning to the Hound Ears clubhouse for his coffee and daily newspaper.

The Governor's master bedroom has a king bed with a private bathroom and a flat screen TV. A second bedroom has a queen bed with a private bath and a flat screen TV. A third bedroom has twin beds and the full bathroom is just outside the door. The loft has twin beds. There is a new large flat screen TV in the family room. WiFi (high speed internet) is provided.
You will find all the comforts in this well equipped home to make your vacation one to be remembered. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need to prepare a delicious meal is provided. The kitchen has new appliances. A beautiful stone wood burning fireplace can cultivate an atmosphere of coziness and warmth on a cool mountain evening.
You will feel safe and secure in this mountain retreat. It is located in Hound Ears Club, a prestigious gated community with 24 hour security. The Watauga River, one of the best trout streams in the south, borders the Hound Ears property and is very convenient for those who dream of the ultimate fishing experience.

About Barbara Hammond
Barbara is a retired surgical nurse and Ron is a retired pastor. This home has been in our family since the mid 90s and we have come to love and appreciate the enchanting surrounding area of Boone and Blowing Rock. The lure of the mountains draws us here again and again as we enjoy all that the area has to offer. We have spent treasured hours with our children and grandchildren in Hound Ears. Kids and grownups alike can have fun and good times in our mountain home. We are sure you can have the same experience. Ron and Barbara, Maryville, Tennessee
Barbara Hammond purchased this House in 1993
Why Barbara Hammond chose Brushy Fork
My brother bought this home from Gov. Terry Sanford in 1993 and we secured the property in 1996. Through the years we have enjoyed so much getting away to this special place. The mountains truly are magical.

Beautiful location! Great 2 family home
We wanted a place to comfortably house 2 families for a snow tubing weekend, and this worked well. The stream that split around both sides of the home was beautiful! The decorations were a little dated, but that did not affect the quality of our stay, the quality of the home, or the quality of the owners! Easy to rent, check in and out, etc. Great people to deal with, and a safe gated, scenic location. A short hop to the slopes as well! Would recommend you checking out this home!
Thank you for writing such a nice review that will give future travelers a feel for my home. So glad that your two families enjoyed your stay. It was a pleasure to share my home with you and hope you will come back soon. Barbara
Smal cute and comfortable home that makes good use of every inch!
We were in the mountains for skiing and horseback riding so to us location was paramount. This home did not disappoint and the owners are truly caring compassionate people. We had to leave a few days early due to a unforeseen emergency at home and the owners reached out to us to work something out. Extremely classy and not the usual landlords we deal with when renting through sites like VRBO though I would argue that was the intention of these sites when they were originally started. Rent and stay as family and the Hammonds treat you like family. We enjoyed our stay and will be back.
Hey Mike, it was our pleasure to share our home with you and your nice family. I do hope you can come back and stay another time and not have to leave early. Thank you so much for your kind words and the positive review. Warmest regards, Barbara
The cabin was wonderful! Very cozy and quiet.
We had a wonderful relaxing stay. The cabin was very comfortable and we'll furnished. The area was very quiet and private. We will definitely stay here again.
So glad you folks were able to get away and spend some time in my home. It was my pleasure to have you visit and hope you will be able to return again sometime at a future date. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and writing this review. Please come back whenever you can.
Truly tranquil last minute get away!
We really enjoyed our stay in this special home and so appreciate the owners working with us last minute. The sound of the stream and the beautiful boulders covered in mosses were really magical. Everyone associated with the club was very helpful and my husband was able to play the beautiful golf course a couple of times. We hope to be back to the area again.
Thank you for your positive review and for taking the time to send it. I am so glad that everything fell into place (especially the golfing for Dean), and that you enjoyed your stay. I do hope that you will be able to come back and visit me again soon. Take care!
Great Place to Stay
Ideal place for our family. Owner was very accommodating.
I enjoyed so much our conversation by phone and am pleased that my home was comfortable for your family. If future travels bring you back my way, I would love to accommodate you and your family again. Thank you for taking the time to send in your nice review. Barbara
House is very much as advertised
The decks and running stream along the sides and front of the house are really special. We ate every meal outside on the large spacious deck.
Both the king and queen beds were very comfortable and kitchen was unusually well stocked with dishes and every needed cooking pot/pans. The master bedroom is far enough away from the other bedrooms that it is quiet. Bathrooms in the smaller bedrooms are Small but that seems to be the case in most of the older Hound Ears homes. Location at the top of Cherry/Hickory was Very Quiet and never heard any of the neighbors which is not generally the case in the homes closer to the clubhouse.
Thank you for all the positive comments. It has been a pleasure talking with you and I am happy that everything went well and you enjoyed my home. I hope you will come back and visit again while your new condo is being remodeled.
Our home is kid friendly but there are steps to the loft. Our grandchildren enjoy playing in the mountain stream. Valle Crucis Park is located behind the original Mast General Store. This park is a wonderful place for family activities- picnicking, fishing, soccer, basketball, and playground area. Kids can play while parents walk the large oval track along side the scenic Watauga River. Children as well as adults will enjoy the thrills of Tweetsie Railroad Amusement Park' , 'Grandfather Mountain with its hiking trails, museum, wildlife park and fantastic views is a must ' , 'Great base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and leaf watching in autumn' , 'The Watauga River, which runs along side Hound Ears, provides outstanding trout fishing amid the beautiful scenery' , 'Collegiate sports at Appalachian State University' , 'The area provides many opportunities for golfing'
