You will experience the ultimate relaxation sitting on our large private deck surrounded by a canopy of mature trees and listening to a bubbling mountain stream as it rushes through the yard of our enchanting mountain home. This may be a time to read, reflect or just take a nap as you enjoy the wonders of nature. A meal cooked on an outdoor grill and served on the deck will provide many hours of family togetherness and conversation. A huge rock in front of the deck also provides a sitting area to enjoy this clear flowing stream as it journeys down the mountainside. This unique place has an unusual and fascinating history. It was never built to be a rental. The original builder was Terry Sanford, former Governor of North Carolina and U. S. Senator. This charming home served for many years as the summer home and family getaway for the Sanford family. Neighbors still recall how the Governor walked down the mountain each morning to the Hound Ears clubhouse for his coffee and daily newspaper.

This comfortable home with 3 bedrooms and a loft can sleep 8 people. 3 colorfully decorated bathrooms join these sleeping facilities. The Governor's master bedroom has a king bed with a private bathroom and a flat screen TV. A second bedroom has a queen bed with a private bath and a flat screen TV. A third bedroom has twin beds and the full bathroom is just outside the door. The loft has twin beds. There is a new large flat screen TV in the family room. WiFi (high speed internet) is provided.

You will find all the comforts in this well equipped home to make your vacation one to be remembered. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need to prepare a delicious meal is provided. The kitchen has new appliances. A beautiful stone wood burning fireplace can cultivate an atmosphere of coziness and warmth on a cool mountain evening.

You will feel safe and secure in this mountain retreat. It is located in Hound Ears Club, a prestigious gated community with 24 hour security. The Watauga River, one of the best trout streams in the south, borders the Hound Ears property and is very convenient for those who dream of the ultimate fishing experience.

The Hound Ears, Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk area provides all the opportunities necessary for a fulfilling vacation for adults as well as children. Many fantastic hiking trails are easily accessible including those on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain. Blowing Rock is a haven for antique shoppers and for those who enjoy outlet shopping as well as live theatre. Excellent restaurants can be found in the entire area. Tweetsie Railroad, Hawks Nest Zip line, gem mining, and Valle Crucis park (picnicking, playground, swimming, basketball) and the wildlife park at Grandfather Mountain will provide unforgettable fun experiences for any child, as well as your entire family. During the winter months, avid skiers and snowboarders can enjoy some of the best ski resorts in the eastern US only a very short drive from Hound Ears.

Keywords: House in gated community, large deck, mountain stream, near great entertainment/arts/ restaurants/fishing, hiking and skiing.

About Barbara Hammond

Barbara is a retired surgical nurse and Ron is a retired pastor. This home has been in our family since the mid 90s and we have come to love and appreciate the enchanting surrounding area of Boone and Blowing Rock. The lure of the mountains draws us here again and again as we enjoy all that the area has to offer. We have spent treasured hours with our children and grandchildren in Hound Ears. Kids and grownups alike can have fun and good times in our mountain home. We are sure you can have the same experience.

Why Barbara Hammond chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

My brother bought this home from Gov. Terry Sanford in 1993 and we secured the property in 1996. Through the years we have enjoyed so much getting away to this special place. The mountains truly are magical.

Cozy and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Barbara Hammond was communicative and helpful while I was planning my vacation. The Hammond's home was cozy and well equip to accommodate eight guests. The faint sound of the stream running under the house at night was very relaxing. The large patio and gas grill made for very pleasant evenings under the stars. I would certainly recommend the Hammond's mountain house to my friends and family. I hope I can get back up there this Fall!

Long weekend at Hound Ears Club

  • 3 of 5

Six of us stayed at the Hammond home and enjoyed our stay. The location is easily accessible to many of the attractions in the High Country. Barbara was most responsive to our questions, and I enjoyed getting to know her over the phone and through email. However, we did find the mattresses on the single beds downstairs to be rather hard. All together, our stay was very positive.

Overall we would rate it 70-75 out of 100

  • 3 of 5

The property was beautiful. with the streams trees and boulders under the home it was pleasant. The large porch was great. The home had everything you could possibly want available in the kitchen

However I must also tell you about the problems .The inside of the home had very bad musty odor. 2 of the toilets needed flapper replacements. I had to fix the flapper by hand after each use.. The outdoor cook was so dirty we could not use it .The living room chandelier

did not work .We kept most of lights on when we where at home .The home was clean .The owner was fine..

Overall we would rate it 70-75 out of 100

Owner's Response: My mountain home is surrounded by lots of trees and has a beautiful stream flowing along side the house. The issue of a musty smell can be attributed to the heavy rainfall this summer. This issue will be resolved when the normal weather patterns resume. In addition, I have added a dehumidifier to assist with any moisture that might occur. A new air conditioning unit is also helping to alleviate this concern. The toilets have been repaired and a new switch for the living room chandelier has been installed. Plans for a new gas grill are in place. Things malfunction in any home. We try to be punctual in making repairs. Our ultimate goal continues to be that of providing our guests with a cozy, comfortable mountain retreat.

Sadly deteriorating!

  • 1 of 5

I'm sorry to say that despite having a gracious owner, & residing in a beautiful golf club, this dismal, depressing A-frame is in need of a total renovation. The odor of mildew was overwhelming & required 2 large, noisy dehumidifiers & overhead fans running constantly & several Air- Wick plug-ins. Kitchen & bathrooms are archaic; little was provided. We emphatically cannot recommend this cabin to anyone. If we hadn't prepaid for the month, & another was available we would have left.

Owner's Response: The issue of mildew has never been expressed by any of my former guests. My mountain home is surrounded by trees and has a beautiful stream flowing on both sides of the house. This year, there has been an enormous amount of rain during July and August....more than usual. With all of these factors, one might expect to have a moisture issue. I have had my home checked out, and was told that as the weather conditions return to normal, this issue should be eliminated. In addition, I have a dehumidifier in place as a back up to assist in handling any moisture that might occur. My home has a fully equipped kitchen with new appliances. There are extra sheets and towels in the linen closet. Everything that is necessary for a comfortable and enjoyable stay is provided. My home is a mountain retreat tucked away in a beautiful forest surrounded by nature and wildlife, with comfortable accommodations for all who come to visit.

Very relaxing and very beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Hammond's beautiful mountain home for one week. It was quite beautiful and everything for which we could have asked. Sitting on the deck listening to the stream bubbling down the mountain, trees, birds and NATURE was worth it just for that alone. I recommend this vacation home MOST highly. We will definitely be back!!
