High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Location: In Hound Ears Club near Boone, North Carolina in Blue Ridge Mountains. USA (15 minutes to Blowing Rock) View map.

Accommodations: House, 3 bedrooms + loft. 3 baths (sleeps 8)

You will experience the ultimate relaxation sitting on our large private deck surrounded by a canopy of mature trees and listening to a bubbling mountain stream as it rushes through the yard of our enchanting mountain home. This may be a time to read, reflect or just take a nap as you enjoy the wonders of nature. A meal cooked on an outdoor grill and served on the deck will provide many hours of family togetherness and conversation. A huge rock in front of the deck also provides a sitting area to enjoy this clear flowing stream as it journeys down the mountainside. This unique place has an unusual and fascinating history. It was never built to be a rental. The original builder was Terry Sanford, former Governor of North Carolina and U. S. Senator. This charming home served for many years as the summer home and family getaway for the Sanford family. Neighbors still recall how the Governor walked down the mountain each morning to the Hound Ears clubhouse for his coffee and daily newspaper.

This comfortable home with 3 bedrooms and a loft can sleep 8 people. 3 colorfully decorated bathrooms join these sleeping facilities. The Governor's master bedroom has a king bed with a private bathroom and a flat screen TV. A second bedroom has a queen bed with a private bath and a flat screen TV. A third bedroom has twin beds and the full bathroom is just outside the door. The loft has twin beds. There is a new large flat screen TV in the family room. WiFi (high speed internet) is provided.

You will find all the comforts in this well equipped home to make your vacation one to be remembered. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need to prepare a delicious meal is provided. The kitchen has new appliances. A beautiful stone wood burning fireplace can cultivate an atmosphere of coziness and warmth on a cool mountain evening.

You will feel safe and secure in this mountain retreat. It is located in Hound Ears Club, a prestigious gated community with 24 hour security. The Watauga River, one of the best trout streams in the south, borders the Hound Ears property and is very convenient for those who dream of the ultimate fishing experience.

The Hound Ears, Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk area provides all the opportunities necessary for a fulfilling vacation for adults as well as children. Many fantastic hiking trails are easily accessible including those on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain. Blowing Rock is a haven for antique shoppers and for those who enjoy outlet shopping as well as live theatre. Excellent restaurants can be found in the entire area. Tweetsie Railroad, Hawks Nest Zip line, gem mining, and Valle Crucis park (picnicking, playground, swimming, basketball) and the wildlife park at Grandfather Mountain will provide unforgettable fun experiences for any child, as well as your entire family. During the winter months, avid skiers and snowboarders can enjoy some of the best ski resorts in the eastern US only a very short drive from Hound Ears.

Keywords: House in gated community, large deck, mountain stream, near great entertainment/arts/ restaurants/fishing, hiking and skiing.

About Barbara Hammond

Barbara is a retired surgical nurse and Ron is a retired pastor. This home has been in our family since the mid 90s and we have come to love and appreciate the enchanting surrounding area of Boone and Blowing Rock. The lure of the mountains draws us here again and again as we enjoy all that the area has to offer. We have spent treasured hours with our children and grandchildren in Hound Ears. Kids and grownups alike can have fun and good times in our mountain home. We are sure you can have the same experience.

Why Barbara Hammond chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

My brother bought this home from Gov. Terry Sanford in 1993 and we secured the property in 1996. Through the years we have enjoyed so much getting away to this special place. The mountains truly are magical.

Very relaxing and very beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Hammond's beautiful mountain home for one week. It was quite beautiful and everything for which we could have asked. Sitting on the deck listening to the stream bubbling down the mountain, trees, birds and NATURE was worth it just for that alone. I recommend this vacation home MOST highly. We will definitely be back!!

The Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our all-too-brief stay at Hound Ears. This quaint home provided an excellent base for our hiking expeditions to nearby waterfalls and an unforgettable mountain climbing experience for our girls. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen functional and the location of the home over a babbling brook was simply ideal. We made good use of the plentiful dry wood and took the chill off of each evening with a roaring fire. We will definitely be back!

excellent choice of mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful week vacation. It was great to sleep listening to the stream that passes under the cabin. It had easy access to the roads to all the local attractions and the cabin was well equipped and very comfortable. Also the club had great and helpful staff. Thank you so much Mr and Mrs Hammond for sharing your place !

Great cozy place, wonderful people!

  • 5 of 5

Our total experience regarding the house was amazing.

1. The owners were very accommodating. I spent some time with them on the phone and emailing them back and forth with requests and they were able to meet all of them. In addition, they were also super friendly that I felt very comfortable with them. I didn't hesitate to make those phone calls or send those emails any time I had a question.

2. The house itself was great. Outside, you'll see plenty of trees and hear the calm rushing of a stream running beside the house. Inside, the place is cozy and welcoming. We cooked twice and everything we needed to prepare the food was available.

I highly recommend this place!

Adorable Private Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Cozy cottage home settled in the mountains with plenty of trees for cool breezes. Our GPS could not find the house. Maybe the address of the gatehouse would have been better. Speaking of the gatehouse, all the security men were very nice and extremely helpful. Close to Boone, Linville and Grandfather Mountain plenty of views and shopping. We went to the Highland Games so the house was very close to the event. We traveled with 6 adults and one infant. Plenty of privacy, rustic decor, and very clean,. Two bedrooms have their own baths which made it nice for the couples . one bedroom with twin beds is located on the same floor with a third bath in the hall. The fourth bedroom is a loft overseeing the livingroom. The kitchen and livingroom were spacious for our group. The kitchen, bath and bedrooms were all stocked with plenty of linens and dishes etc. The temperature was very comfortable, we really did not need the air conditioning on the house keeps quite cool with all the trees. The deck is off the front of the house with a cute creek running through it. The grill was large enough to cook burgers brats and chicken at once and their is plenty of seating on the deck. During the day there were very little bugs but a night I would definetely not have a window open! As expected being in the mountains. Barbara responds quickly, she was not at the house when we arrived but was very easy to get ahold of. Very nice place we look forward to our next visit.

Ahhhhhh!!!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful rental was the perfect place for our "girls getaway". The home is amazing and in the perfect location for seeing the sights--or just taking it easy and listening to the sound of the stream outside our window. The bedrooms/bathrooms were great for our group of 7 women and the kitchen was well stocked with items needed for us to enjoy our meals in-house. The location is between Boone and Blowing Rock--just perfect! The owner was fantastic to work with as we planned our visit to this lovely retreat. Looking forward to another visit!

Our home is kid friendly but there are steps to the loft. Our grandchildren enjoy playing in the mountain stream. Valle Crucis Park is located behind the original Mast General Store. This park is a wonderful place for family activities- picnicking, fishing, soccer, basketball, and playground area. Kids can play while parents walk the large oval track along side the scenic Watauga River. Children as well as adults will enjoy the thrills of Tweetsie Railroad Amusement Park' , 'Grandfather Mountain with its hiking trails, museum, wildlife park and fantastic views is a must ' , 'Great base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and leaf watching in autumn' , 'The Watauga River, which runs along side Hound Ears, provides outstanding trout fishing amid the beautiful scenery' , 'Collegiate sports at Appalachian State University' , 'The area provides many opportunities for golfing'
