Casa Cielo, The Dwelling

Located on 40 acres of high-desert pinon juniper terrain on an open canyon ridge, this retreat vacation home floats above the Montezuma Valley. Off the beaten path, the only noise you might hear is the occasional contented mooing of grazing cattle or the yipping of skittish coyotes on graceful moonlit nights.

Your separate dwelling features two bedrooms ( 2 queens), 2 baths, and an open kitchen-living area. The large expanse of encased windows let you contemplate the geologic intersection between valley, mesa and mountains. A sleeper couch in the upper-level open den which looks over the canyon from your front door can accommodate two additional people. A second building on the premises can be used for an additional dormitory or retreat space.

Personal guided fly-fishing trips with a resident master-fisherman and therapeutic massage sessions are available upon request. Enjoy our private hiking/mountain bike riding trail for those daily cardio workouts by stepping out your back door. The separate 400 square foot meeting hall can be used for secluded creative endeavors such as writing, music, meditation, yoga practice or other quiet activities.

The Locale

Need to escape your daily routines and hectic schedules? Get creative, get quiet, or get active with unparalleled, thrilling, year round, outdoor experiences in a locale that offers hiking, biking, skiing, 4-wheeling, fishing, canoeing and rafting as starters.

In a more northerly direction, only an hour and a half drive away, is the glamour and glitz of the transformed mining town and ski area of Telluride. This Victorian vintage-style village is world famous for its annual outdoor music, arts, culinary and wine events, and film festivals.

Rich in First American cultures, we are within half a day’s drive to the pueblos of northern New Mexico and their festive feast days and unique artistic expressions in pottery, silver-smithing and upright loom weavings. Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque bring the colorful architectural and art influences of the old country of Spain and its more modern expressions through its mingling with southwestern traditions and landscapes.

About Jeanne Cain

Leonard and Jeanne Cain were drawn to New Mexico and southwestern Colorado by the crystal clear skies, aspen and pine forests and rivers with their majestic red rock canyons. After working in rural health care clinics, they moved to the Cortez area where Leonard had a family medical practice. Mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, skiing, and fly fishing have been a few of their passions.

Their many years of zen study are reflected in the open quiet spaces they have built and the sculptural ceramic and fiber arts Jeanne currently pursues. After 35 years of living in the southwest, the family is eager to share their enchantment with this retreat setting and rich cultural crossroads of native american life, cattle ranching, and outdoor splendors.

What makes this house unique

This quiet setting allows you to contemplate expansive vistas of mesa and mountains or catch the migrations of elk and deer foraging on grasses up to your windows. A shared hot tub lets you take in even greater views on star lit nights of the Milky Way and orbiting planets. Early morning or evening walks on the private trail built by the creator of Phil's World, a nationally heralded biking park, is a soothing and easy amble through sage brush and pinon...

a great stay-cation spot

way out of the way, which was what we loved about casa cielo. it was quiet. at night, we sat outside & could see the stars. the location is perfect for all we got to do. my husband & son enjoyed fishing. son's girlfriend, my daughter & her family accompanied me on day trips to durango & mesa verde. there are lots more to explore & we got only got a taste. jeanne is way cool. we loved it. and .... if she would have us back, we would definitely stay at casa cielo, again.

p.s. the only complaints from my family were about the skunks & bees. i still rate 5/5.

This is a great remote southwest Colorado getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We brought friends from Louisville, KY for a visit to Mesa Verde and enjoy the ambiance of southwest Colorado. We could not have been more pleased and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Cielo. Jeanne has provided an authentic experience with all the natural plantings and landscape. We spent evenings and mornings watching the deer play and a coyote prowling the property. The house was clean, spacious, well decorated and extremely comfortable. A short visit with Jeanne made us wish we had more time to spend and get to know her story and interesting lifestyle. Jeanne you have provided an experience that is not that easy to find in rental properties. Thanks for the effort you have made to present a natural environment and unique home for many to enjoy.

Perfect location for our Southern Colorado Visit

  • 5 of 5

Location, location, location.Casa Cielo was perfect for us while visiting Mesa Verde, Telluride, Canyons of the Ancients and a lot of the local spots in Delores and Cortez.

Casa Cielo is well stocked so check in before buying a lot of condiments and supplies. What it may lack in some areas it is well made up for in others. Highly recommend and would stay here again if in the area !

Just amazing!

  • 5 of 5

I just came back from Colorado where I stayed 4 nights in Casa Cielo with my husband and a friend of us. The house is impressive!! Very good taste decorated, very well equipped, spacious, clean, quiet, great views and I can go on and on. It has 2 big bedrooms and 2 bathrooms so we were completely comfortable. We were visiting Mesa Verde every day. Is not far away and when you go back home is a pleasure to be quiet and with a nice view. The house has everything you could need which is very important when you are not close to civilization. I strongly recommend this property and thank Jeannie for having us. If I would return to the area, for sure I'd go back to Casa Cielo!

I want to move here

  • 5 of 5

I really want to move here. Jeanne was great. House was great. Hiking trail was great. The brewpub in Dolores also great. But weather wins out. Cools off to 68 around 9-10 PM. Sitting on porch may require a jacket and this is August. cannot wait to go back.

Beautiful Property and lovely experience

  • 5 of 5

This property was stunning! Beautiful majestic mountain views complete with deer, elk and coyotes. We sat outside every morning and evening to watch nature's show. Property close to Mesa Verde National Park and many other outdoor activities...too many for one trip! Comfy beds, hot shower, and all the comforts of home. We will definitely be back soon.
