Trout Hollow is a fantastic location to start your Northern Michigan vacation. Located south of Traverse City on the South Boardman River, this is a outdoor enthusiasts playground. Situated on an acre and on the bend of the river, here you can listen to the babble of the river, hop in a kayak (2 are provided) and meander down miles and miles of pristine waters. If fly-fishing is something you like, there are many spots on the river that allow for this great sport. Nature wraps around you everywhere you go. You may never want to leave! After a hard day's work having so much fun outdoors, relax in the hot tub that overlooks the river. Ahhhh!

There is a sofa bed in the living room. Large flat panel TV, satellite and WiFi round out your No central heat, but there is a gas fireplace, wood fireplace, and space heaters to keep you warm.

Not worth it

  • 1 of 5

Rating Details:

The property manager was adequately helpful.

The vacation rental was somewhat dirty.

I was happy with the location.

I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental.

Reviewer Comments:

This cabin is overpriced and NOT worth it at all. In fact, had I not signed a contract, I would have requested a partial refund. We go on 1 family vacation a year with money that has been saved all year and this was by far the worst lodging ever. For the amount of money we paid, we could have stayed in a VERY nice hotel in town and had less stress. Let's start with arrival where we were met with a dead bird on the patio that had been there a few days (probably since during cleaning time between visits) and was still there when we left, then there were the non-stop bees by the front door and the hot tub, the floor is sinking in spots amd is in need of repair, there is alot of areas that could be updated. It was NOT what was expected, especially for someone wanting an easy relaxing vacation and recovery from surgery. The only positives that I can think of are the view to the river, the fire pit, and an updated large shower-bathroom. However, the town was GREAT and had plenty for us to do. I would visit it again and definitely not rent from Visit Up North Vacation Rentals PLC again. We have used other websites like VRBO, which in my opinion offer better services.

Owner's Response: We are sorry for the difficulties you experienced during your stay. We do have the property treated for bees (yellow jackets). They can be a problem in this area. Most likely the bird hit the large window as they sometimes do. Whether it was there for awhile or not we do not know. We are sorry if we did not care for this matter. Trout Hollow is a rustic cabin however the owner wants to offer comfortable lodging. As far as VRBO goes it is a listing site only. They do not manage homes or care for the issues at them. VRBO is used by private parties and management companies. You found our rental on VRBO where we list.

This was a very charming place to stay. It was neat, clean and cozy! We enjoyed the hot tub while doing some star gazing. The kitchen has updated appliances and had everything we needed to make our meals. We would definitely stay here again.

Trout Hollow rental on the Boardman River

I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.

Reviewer Comments:

Excellent. The accomodations were good, but the best part was the location on the Boardman River. I have only one very minor concern. I was unable to easily turn the hot tub off. Had to pull the circuit breaker. The hot tub is noisy, enough to disturb the silence of the location and interfere with the beautiful sound of the river.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us! We have had the hot tub serviced and should be in much better working order. The sound of the river is wonderful indeed.

Reviewer Comments:

I am going to try to give an honest review on this location that we recently srtayed at. After reading the past several reviews I was extremely hesitant about staying here. I did call Up North twice and was reassured about the property. The cabin is located in a beautiful setting. There are neighbors right across the river so not as private as I was hoping. We enjoyed the fire pit but no real furniture to sit on outside. They had a rustic swing but you had to put a towel down to sit on it but it was so splintered. The choice of outside seating was wooden furniture that was is bad shape or plastic chairs that were child sized. The inside of the cabin is very "rustic." It is in desperate need of a very thorough cleaning. The carpet in the bedrooms are filthy and we kept our shoes on at all times. The worst part for me was the smell of the cabin. There is a very strong musty smell especially in the master bedroom. There is only one bathroom in the cabin and was less then desirable. I never felt clean the whole time I was there. Their cabin has it's place. If you are coming up with the boys and they don't care about these things...then it works. Although my husband and sons description of the the inside of the cabin was "this place is gross." We ended up leaving a day early because we all agreed that we would much rather be at home then staying at this cabin. It's my opinion that updating and a good cleaning needs to happen here. We would never rent this place again and definitely would not recommend it to any of our family or friends. When we arrived back home my husband said to me "I feel like I never could relax while we were there." Isn't that the point of vacation??

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and all of your good suggestions. We have made the owner aware and we will be implementing changes in the spring of 2018. It indeed is a rustic cabin very close to the rivers edge. Like many older waterfront properties you can get a musty odor. We do deep clean the cabin in the spring as well as clean the carpet. We truly are sorry that you did not enjoy your time spent at this cabin.

Good location. I expected more of a well maintained house. Door locks and screens needed maintenance. Grass was cut but all weeds.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Trout Hollow is a rustic cabin on a river. The age of it is early 1900s. The locks and screens have al been addressed. All grass lawns are not something you will typically see on river fronts. It is healthier for this wetland areas to have natural grasses. If there were only grass lawns it could cause flooding in the house as drainage changes with a grass lawn.
