About the property

Views Stunning From One Thousand Year Old Watch Tower.

Santa 10 is an ancient medieval watchtower (circa XIV a.d) sits on a hillside of olive trees and vineyard facing Siena. The Tower still stands high on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside, from where the gates of the city of Siena are visible as well as vineyards, olive groves and the ancient pilgrimage route- the Francigena.

The cellar was excavated in the tuff (the indigenous earth of the area) featuring an imposing vaulted ceiling and it is still being used today (this is where organic wines and a brandy are produced). Guests can still walk along a little path, which was used to escape from the Tower.

The east side of the Tower was enlarged in 1800.

Santa Dieci is 2.5 km from one of the ancient gates of the city of Siena and it is one of the few wineries in the area that lies within the jurisdiction of the City of Siena.

All natural, local materials were used in the renovation of the buildings so that their beauty and the integrity of their history could be maintained. The area where we live (Santa Regina) must respect all regulations governing the protection and integrity of the natural landscape.

The flooring was restored with a particular mix of mortar and the local earth and oxides were applied to vary their colours. The staircases feature travertine from the mines in Rapolano. In order to maintain the large vaults and ancient beams, we rebuilt the roof by using techniques that fostered natural insultation and air circulation.

The perimeter walls were entirely covered with a 10 cm layer of cork, which allows for acoustic and thermic insulation. The farm house is reassuringly warm in the winter and blessedly cool in the summer, not only on account of the restoration work but also because the ancient stone walls are quite thick and filled with the local tuff earth reaching a metre in diametre.

The plaster, which was used on the buildings inside and outside, were made with natural limestone, so the walls are well ventilated. The bathroom walls and the flooring were made with an eco-friendly mix of mortar composed of copper powder, local earth and oxides. We left the red bricks of the ancient Tower as is in keeping with the other buildings in our area and respecting the historical architecture of the period when it was built. The part of the Tower that was enlarged was covered with limestone and a coffee coloured brown earth.

The Tower

The entire building is 250 squared metres and is divided on 3 floors. It was originally decorated with a mix of modern and antique family furniture but over the years, interesting objects were added a little at a time by pieces we collected on our family trips all over the world. Pieces of artwork in pastels painted by Gianni, which evoke unexpected mathematical themes, bring a personal touch to the Tower.

On the ground floor of the villa, you can step into the large family kitchen and admire a rustic table, which seats 10 people, a refined powder bathroom featuring a copper sink in an ancient wine barrel and a large living room which boasts a fireplace surrounded by books and pictures from our trips. So on the ground floor, there’s the kitchen and the family living room and in the living room there are two large glass doors that open on to a great terrace overlooking the 500 square meter garden. The garden is entirely surrounded by a stonewall.

The terrace is made of ancient bricks and runs the length of the farmhouse. You can enjoy a wonderful meal on the terrace sitting around the table, canopied by soft curtains, or just lie around reading a book or sipping an aperitif with the view of the Torre del Mangia and the Siena cityscape in full view.

The garden features three ancient trees (a cedar, a sycamore and a maple tree) under which there are tables and chairs where you can enjoy the shade and have breakfast on hot days. You can also discover many kinds of flowering plants: hydrangeas in the acidic area under the cedar tree, ancient rose and lavender bushes scattered around the rest of the grounds. In a private area of the garden, you will find a heated stone jacuzzi which is also illuminated at night. This relaxing area is shaded and it makes for quite a pleasant experience, letting all the tensions go as you admire the Siena cityscape.

On the first floor, guests will find a double bedroom with bath and shower. There is also another double bedroom and a large bedroom with a queen size bunk bed. These share a large bathroom with shower. In all the bedrooms and the two bathrooms luminous sunshine streams in through large glass windows. The first bedroom also offers a lovely balcony from where you can see a stunning view of the underlying valley and the Siena cityscape. On the first floor, there is also a laundry room with all the amenities: washing machine, drier, ironing board and iron.

The oldest part of the Tower is on the third floor, which features a large master bedroom with bath and shower and from its windows you can see all the property and surrounding landscape. There are windows on each side of the Tower. There’s a wooden loft in the master bedroom where you can find an ancient Indonesian bed, which can serve as a sofa or an extra bed. This part of the tower has air conditioning.

The apartment "Lemon house":

in 2012 we restored the old house of lemon trees. This very kind indipendent apartment on the groundfloor has a big room with 2 double beds, a little equipped kitchen and a bathroom. To restore it we used natural material like "tufo" typical land of our region. The roof is ventilated and built with wood, cork and tiles. The heating is autonomous and radiates under the floor. In the he apartment you will find a homemade cake, our jams, fresh bread, milk, coffee, tea, orange juice, eggs, pecorino "cheese", our oil ... to a welcome breakfast "do-it-yourself". The apartment is wi-fi and has air conditioning. . The apartment is self-catering. We supply sheets and towels, which will be change once a week, but you can request an extra change.

The swimmingpool, our bikes and a completly equipped laundry (washing machine, dryer, iron) are available for you.

The apartment looks over the farmyard. Sleep 4: 2 double bed in the same room.

The Swimming Pool

You can get to the private swimming pool from the large terrace and it is open to the all guests of Santa Dieci who are staying in the Tower and the Lemon Grove Cottage. The pool measures 11 by 6 metres and it faces west towards the breathtaking view of the Siena cityscape. The deck around the pool is constructed with the original old bricks where you can lie around on sunbeds, sit in the sunchairs and a table shaded by a large umbrella where many people choose to have lunch. And lastly, the pool is illuminated at night for those who enjoy a midnight dip.

About Elisa Massone

We are 4.. Gianni is an accountant, a yachtsman, and a farmer who is jealous of his tractor, he is quite and meditative. Elisa is a chatty mathematician, always in ferment. Tommaso and Teresa are our sons. They are 20 and 16 years old. Tommaso is curious, lazy, ironic... Teresa is lively, sharp, curious...

We can’t do without traveling, sharing , smiling. We are curious, outgoing and we prefer “true” relations. We love meeting people from all over the world traveling and even better experiencing the world here in our home, Santa10.

We like to be treated with care and we do so with our guests!

Why Elisa Massone chose Siena

The entire village was a donation given by Gianni’s maternal grandparents at the beginning of the 1900s and from that point on, it became our family home and business.

In 1996, Elisa and Gianna got married and decided to live in the family farm house in front of the Tower and their dream has been and continues to be to keep the small family business going while working in different sectors: Elisa is a mathematics professor at the University of Siena and Gianni is an accountant, farmer and artist. They manage the affairs of the hamlet with passion and with the help of their two children and of course.

The hamlet features the Tower, the Lemon Grove Cottage and a large multilevel farmhouse, which has been renovated over the years, a vineyard and a winery. The Tower was the last building to be renovated and that took place from 2013 to 2014.

What makes this villa unique

The views are just simply stunning. From its strategic position the One thousand year old watch Tower controlled one of the main roads that led up to the gates entering into the medieval city. We like the position, in the country, in the middle of olive trees and vineyards but facing Siena close enough that it feels like you can just reach out and touch the city’s famous skyline. The tower is beautifully decorated by an harmonic mix of modern and antique family furnishings as well as quite interesting objects collected on our trips all over the world. Characteristic oil-paintings, painted by Gianni, are decorative items. In the garden we have a heated stone jacuzzi which is also illuminated at night. The garden area and the hot tube are just perfect for a relaxing and pleasant experience, letting all tensions go away as you admire the magic view of Siena drinking our natural wine. We feel to live in an historic side in harmony with environment and its biological rhythms. We make our natural wine with passion.
