About Elissavet Iakovidou

I come from Athens. The house built 1888 and the land was bought by my husband and me. It was renovated and extended with lots of love and care. I am a Greek and English teacher working at the state schools Athens and I was pensioned in 2010, that is why I decided to move to the beautiful area of Mani. It is a fantastic place with a lot of energy and here I can be inspired and write, since I am an author as well. At the same time I play music with my guitar, mostly Greek music and we are organizing at times concerts and cultural activities so that we'll keep ourselves fit and always on the move. I am absolutely happy living here the whole year long!

Why Elissavet Iakovidou chose Githio

We've been coming since 1994 in the sandy beach of Vathi for holidays and then we thought it would be the ideal place to build our own house. My husband was a German and he felt like settling in Greece. That area means a lot to me since there is a background of tradition and historical events of the past centuries. Besides that the sea and the fantastic sandy beaches made it a very attractive resort not only for the summer but for the winter as well!

What makes this villa unique

There is a lot of sightseeing in the area from medieval and ancient times. The natural environment is unique, since it combines sea and mountain and it is ideal for all year holidays! Swimming in the clear water, climbing on the beautiful mountain ranges of Taygetos and Parnonas, walking around in the area, visiting the small villages and enjoy the hospitality of the people in the tavernas with delicious Greek dishes. The picturesque earthly island Gythio is something beyond your expectations and the stone-built Areopolis is its history and tradition. It is a challenge to visit the area of Mani because it can be still discovered! It is simply a "treasure"!

The area is very interesting concerning historical and ancient sights. Dyros Caves, Mystras byzantine churches, Monemvasia peninsula and build-in town surrounded by the Enetian historical castle, Mani peninsula with all the old stone built towers and castles. Ageranos along with Vathi is a famous among travellers holiday resort with golden sandy beaches and picturesque small bays ideal for families with children, older people and romantic couples as well. Ageranos is a wanderer area as well among the olive and acorn trees, a bird watching area with hawks, falcons and the very rare imperial eagles. The view from the house is breathtaking to the mountain range of Taygetos on the one side and the gorgeous sandy beaches up to Mavrovouni on the other side right into the Lakonian Bay. The very picturesque town Gythio, like a mainland Greek island and the stone-build Areopolis are ideal for strolling, shopping and looking around, with cafes and small tavernas with fresh fish.

Very special house

  • 5 of 5

Elise Cottage is set in the lovely countryside south of Gythion close to the long and unspoilt beach of Vathi. Not so much a cottage but a stylish and well furnished house set in a wonderfully planted, generously large garden full of colour and interest, which is itself set in beautiful countryside.

The house is a home and this shows, every thing works. (Yes, lots of hangers, cutlery, bits and pieces that you hadn't thought about), the room sizes are generous and all lead on to their own balcony/terrace. There are lots of outside sitting areas to accommodate the splendid views over the countryside. You can see the sea, but a word of caution, the views come at a price, it's a steep walk and a careful drive to the beach! Altogether highly recommended.

Une belle maison arrangée avec goût et dotée d'une belle âme

  • 5 of 5

There is a historic and traditional interest in the area. The area of Mani starting from Taygetos range and extending up to the end of the middle foot of Peloponnese is commonly famous for its stone-built castles and towns to defend themselves from the pirate's invasions and the Ottomans subordination during the 1453 till 1821. The Maniates have never surrender to the Ottomans, Turks, during that time and have been fighting constantly on the mountains against that domination. Churches and chapels from the 12th century with fresco and wall paintings mostly from the Byzantine era. The castle city of Mystras, Monemvasia Peninsula built in the Enetic castle, the amazing cave of Dyros, the Tainaron Cape up to the end of the peninsula Mani's with Poseidon Temple, the stone-built Areopolis with St. Taxiarchis church where the flag of the Greek Revolution was raised in 1821 by the Maniates family of Mavromichalis. Last but not least, beautiful and picturesque like an earthly island, Gythio lying in the Lakonian Bay where visitors can enjoy anything they wish. Every small village and town is an attraction. It's up to the visitors to discover those hidden treasures.

Besides historical and archaelogical attractions Mani offers alternative tourism as well, with mountain climbing, wandering, bird-watching, forest walking, hiking, a variety of herbs and botans collection, fanstastic bays for swimming and fishing. A pure natural environment untouched by modern civilization for nature lovers.
