Overview

Kenai Peninsula Cottage Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4 adults + 2 kids)

This property is located across the river from the Kenai Princess Lodge at the beginning of the Upper River Rapids. There is about 130 feet of low bank river frontage and an additional 700 feet of wade access under normal water conditions. This property can be rented with the neighboring River House upstream (VRBO #252577).

We have completed a significant remodel during the winter and spring of 2016 which included adding a new washer/dryer, new flooring, upgrading the kitchen, adding five windows, full length dormer, new interior and exterior paint and a Norwegian stove to better experience this river front setting. For this reason the property will not be available until June 1st, 2016.

The Kenai River is open for fishing between June 11th and May 1st. The ADF&G website is a great source of information on the latest fishing regulations.

About Ryan and Robin

There are few things I enjoy more than floating down the Upper Kenai. I was lucky enough to spend the month of September fishing in Cooper Landing for about a decade before owning this property. For any guests that have not experienced the fall in Cooper Landing, I strongly recommend it.

Ryan and Robin purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Ryan and Robin chose Kenai Peninsula

There are many houses available for rent in Cooper Landing, but few have the river front privacy and fishing as the Bear Den. Sitting by a warm fire down by the river after a great day of exploring Alaska is one of our favorite features of the property.

If the world class rainbow fishing was not enough, the upper river is one of the most beautiful places I have come across. The house sits across from the drift only marker on the Upper Kenai (No motors allowed). Just upstream from the property, the river begins to narrow and pick up current.

What makes this cottage unique

Rainbows and Dollies can be caught easily for most of the summer and fall. In late September and October the second run of Silver Salmon start to stack up behind the house. In March and April the property is home to a concentration of bald eagles that are feasting on spawning silver salmon creating some fantastic photo opportunities.

25-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

  • 5 of 5

We just reluctantly returned from Cooper Landing, Alaska. This house was great! There is no prettier location. We fished in the morning and evening right from the back yard and caught and released more trout than we could have dreamed possible. The back deck was great and we roasted marshmallows on the fire by the river. There was even a nesting pair of eagle’s right across the river from us to keep us company. The interior was very comfortable and felt like home. If you are interested in spending time in a great little house with some of the best Trout fishing in the country, this place is for you!

Bear Den stay in July

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Cooper Landing while staying at the Bear Den. We did not spend a lot of time at Bear Den because of the activities we had previously scheduled. The water had an odor to it when we took a shower but seemed to lessen as more water was used. We were very busy and not having access to the washer and dryer that was on site was an inconvenience that we did not appreciate, and not a very friendly attitude to have towards guests. The TV, which we would have liked to see the news and weather on, was not hooked up to the antenna or cable. The wifi signal was weak probably because it was located under the deck so that the adjacent property could access it as well (just a guess). The pots and pans could be updated and/or added to. I probably overlooked the washer and dryer availability when I booked the rental, had I noticed that there was no laundry facility I probably would not have stayed there. The bottom line is that I want it to feel like home and it didn't, I could have rented an RV and had the same amenities. The property location was beautiful it is a shame a few simple fixes are holding it back. I will see how quickly my deposit is returned and will decide if I will use the owners again IF they add laundry access. My stay in Cooper Landing was great just not long enough.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing the Bear Den and we appreciate your VRBO review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in Cooper Landing. The mountains to the North and South of the property have prevented the use of a satellite dish at the property. We are planning to bring out the cable company again this fall to see if there are any alternative options with the latest dish technology. The TV antenna at the house only gets one station and the reception is poor. Our well is tested every spring by a third party and the filtration system is maintained as per manufacturer specifications. However when the river is high, there can be a sulfur odor. This is a common problem on the all Kenai river front properties during high water. The water remains potable during high water, but the palatability can deteriorate. The washer and dryer is located in a congested garage making it impractical to provide guests access at this time. In 2010 and 2013 we invited contractors to bid on installing a compact washer and dryer in the house, but they were not able to propose a practical solution. We own the property upstream and it shares the same Wi-Fi as the Bear Den. We will investigate why the signal was weak during your visit. The total price for the rental is provided at the time of booking. This amount includes the rental rate, tax, cleaning fee and additional guests if applicable. We require a down payment for 25% of the total rental amount to hold the reservation at the time of booking. The remaining 75% is due one month before arrival. We do not require security, cleaning or damage deposits. Thanks again, Ryan

Bears Den

We had an enjoyable stay. No TV access which I did not mind but some days it would have been nice to catch the news. Would have liked a washer and dryer for our clothes but a laundramat was close so no problem. View of river was awesome. Could have used more cooking utensils such as pots and pans. Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Coopers landing stay

  • 5 of 5

My father and I stayed while fishing the Kenai. Great location! You can fish from the property if you like. Property is very clean and kept up. There was no cable connected to the TV but didn't bother us. They did have movies to play at night if you like. There also was a gas grill that came in very handy to cook your fresh fish from that day. I would recommend staying at this location.

Owner Ryan and Manager Jessica very accommodating and easy to work with. Clean, comfortable and met our needs and expectations. The small downfall was the fact that the river was closed for fishing. The next time we will definitely plan it so we can fish right there. Ryan provided us with a new BBQ grill and we had a nice cookout on the deck. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again a day recommend this place to our friends who would want to stay in the area.
