After 40 years in Hawaii, we decided we wanted a little (not a lot) change, so we found a peaceful property on a big lake, with temperatures even better than Hawaii, the living a little slower, and the people a little more open.
Rand purchased this cottage in 2011
If you are looking for a place to relax and really get into nature, you will be very happy here. Toucans, parrots, etc fly across the back yard, monkeys are in the trees, 75 yards from the porch. If you are looking for a place to relax, it does not get any better than this.
Yet, if you want to turn it up, across the street is the marina and within an hour or two, you can be at Arenal Volcano, mineral hot spas, zip lining through tree tops, white water rafting, be at Coco Beach, the tourist and nightlife center, etc.
You can be as quiet and isolated or active as you choose to be. The octagon houses and cottages are unique and beautiful, the community is quiet and peaceful.

North American like accommodation, cozy, fully stocked for cooking but a couple good restaurants maybe a half mile away. Rand was very knowledgeable and available
Would go back.
We enjoyed a short stay here , drove around Lake Arenal to the volcanoe. Took a bus one day to Monteverde which took 2 hr. on a very rough road _ the suggestion for this would be to take the 4am bus versus the 0830 bus because the birds were quiet mid day when we arrived. THe studio had everything we needed and Rand was very helpful. Saw our first toucan here as we sat on deck.
My wife Martina and I visited Costa Rica for the first time from 20th February to 3rd March. We stayed at Rand's place from 21st to 23rd February. The studio was located in a gated community with an incredible view of Lake Arenal. Facilities for cooking were provided however we ate out at nearby restaurants on two of the nights and picked up a take out from a local pizzeria on the third night. Rand was always available to answer any questions regarding the studio or where to go in the area. We drove around Lake Arenal to the Arenal volcano and in general had a good time exploring the area in our 4X4 SUV ( essential for the area South of the Lake and for a lot of the roads which are in very poor shape once you get of the main paved roads) We were very pleased with the studio accommodation provided which was spacious and had an incredible bathroom with two showers. Everything was clean and had all we required. We even saw toucans flying at the bottom of the garden in the early morning. It can be a bit difficult finding the place but we received help from a local man as we had driven past the entrance. The drive into the estate is on an unpaved road. We had a wonderful time and would not hesitate to recommend Rand's place if you are visiting the Arenal area.

We enjoyed our stay. The location has a beautiful view of the lake. We saw many types of birds and some howler monkeys with babies. Rand was very helpful and accomodating and very pleasant to visit with. The casita was newer, and very clean. The bathroom was huge and there were large windows for ventilation and views. The area had a couple of nice restaurants and we felt very safe in the area. We would definately stay there again. Thanks Rand for being an excellent host!
We enjoyed our stay at this peaceful and safe gaited community. The owner, Rand, was so helpful and was there for our every need... Even found a blender for us to make smoothies and had some cold Imperial beers waiting when we arrived, since we had a long and harrowing drive! The kitchen is tiny so we didn't cook much, but there were lots of nice spots to eat nearby. The bathroom and shower were so roomy and the lovely jetted tub soothed our tired hiking muscles! From the deck, we saw keel-billed toucans and howler monkeys. So fun!
My boyfriend and I visited Costa Rica for three weeks arriving January 10. When we entered our Casita we were absolutely blown away! Very clean well kept, huge shower with dual shower heads and a large jacuzzi tub. The little kitchen area had everything we needed to cook our meals including a small toaster oven with a rotisserie. The gated community definitely gave us a safe feeling and when we did some travelling outside the gated community everyone was just simply nice, friendly and most accommodating. We visited the Brewery at Lake Arenal, the two restaurants in the village of San Luis nearby Towns of Tronadora and Tilaran. The Equus Bar BBQ Restaurant and the Macadamia Restaurant are also a must see. We even had a pizza delivered one evening on a motorcycle from a local pizza restaurant it was scrumptious.
We simply cannot say enough kind things about our host Rand he went out of his way to help us on more than one occasion and had a lot of information and knowledge to share with us. His insight and views on many things were just part of our Costa Rica experience. Everything that we experienced in Costa Rica played a huge part in making a great vacation, one that we will remember for a long time and definitely one we want to experience again and again. We highly recommend travelling here and we will certainly be returning.
San Luis is a small, quiet town with many restaurants and 2 mini marts. Puerto (port) San Luis (about 150 yards away) has a nice grassy park right up to the water. Tilaran (5 miles away) is the major town, with Restaurants, Banks, Supermarkets, Medical and Dental clinics, Pharmacies, etc. Monteverde Cloudforest preserve (approx 30 miles) has Canopy tours, zip lines, tours, etc. Arenal Volcano and hot springs are about 1 1/2 hours away. White water rafting and a big cat zoo/shelter is about 45 minutes away. After a hard day, a professional masseuse can come to the casita and give you a massage for only $30 an hour.
