Casita de Padre, Old Town Albuquerque

Sleeps4

Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

Overview

About the property

Named "La porte du ciel" (Heaven's Gate) by a priest who lived here for years, he was only referred to by locals as the priest. No one knew his name but they saw him often as he walked about the area he knew as home. This is the second house to be completed in an old 19th century family compound of adobes that is being renovated just blocks away from Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza. A typical "shot gun" style house with a pitched tin roof, the house maintains its late 1800s original footprint although it has all the 21st century upgrades -- modern bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, central heating/cooling system, WiFi. There is also access to a laundry room that was originally bathrooms separate from the houses, not completed until 1957. What has been maintained is the simple architectural features of the house, the original plank flooring, high ceilings, a private backyard patio with access to a shared coyote fence ramada in the back lot. It is across the street from the Centennial Park and all the major museums which were the agricultural fields of old Albuquerque over 100 years ago. To view the larger casita that is located in the same compound, refer to listing 3895291. This makes a wonderful multi-unit for extended families or friends vacationing together.

About Kris Linton

I am a retired therapist who has always loved local history and architecture in Albuquerque, my native home. My husband and I have lived in and renovated old homes for over 35 years. We have one daughter who lives in London and also loves old buildings.

Kris Linton purchased this house in 2014

Why Kris Linton chose Albuquerque

It had been for sale for over 3 years and 3 of the 4 homes on the property were not inhabitable. Because of its wonderful location close to Old Town and across the street from the park, we were afraid someone may raze the old buildings and build something modern. We loved the old modest adobes.

What makes this house unique

We have made every effort to maintain the integrity of these old houses while providing modern conveniences that 21st century families expect. We have worked side by side with craftsmen that work with adobes, tin roofs, hand plastering and technicians that have made electrical wires, heating elements and plumbing features as discreet as possible.

Perfect location. Large city Park across the street

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time. I was in Albuquerque for business and my husband came along. Within walking distance was the Old Town Plaza. It has wonderful food, local artists with small shops, it was fun to just walk around and look. Fantastic park across the street. 10/10 would definitely do this again!!

all the little touches were endearing

Everything about this little house made for a great vacation. Kris made me feel very welcome. Loved the breakfast empanadas, and the dogs enjoyed their treats as well. Such a great location, history, and overall experience.

Amazing Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This home made our trip to Albuquerque perfect! It's location is just a 5 minute walk from Old Town, a short drive to downtown and there are numerous museums nearby. It's the perfect size for a couples getaway and our dachshund loved the backyard. If you are going to stay in Albuquerque, I would highly recommend.

Beautiful labor of love

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in one of four beautifully restored adobe houses in a compound Kris and Terry have lovingly and meticulously brought back to life. If you love history and architecture, this stay is a gift. This renovation was a labor of love as they bought a compound where only one building was even habitable and many of the walls were crumbling. Kris has placed beautiful art and objects all around to further enrich the experience. The kitchen is perfect for any meal and there is a huge amount of parking and lots of little sitting areas in the huge, gated front and back yards. The park is a delight right across the street. Kris is available for every detail, even storing some things when I had a four day break in my month's stay. I can't imagine a better choice in Albuquerque.

Simply wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

First time using Homeaway and it was a great experience. Our home was so comfortable and offered so many little extras. The property is walking distance to Old Town, museums, and lovely park across the street. The home is decorated with the warmth of a quaint Albuquerque home. Thanks to the owners, Kris and Terry, for sharing their lovely home.
