About the property

Named "La porte du ciel" (Heaven's Gate) by a priest who lived here for years, he was only referred to by locals as the priest. No one knew his name but they saw him often as he walked about the area he knew as home. This is the second house to be completed in an old 19th century family compound of adobes that is being renovated just blocks away from Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza. A typical "shot gun" style house with a pitched tin roof, the house maintains its late 1800s original footprint although it has all the 21st century upgrades -- modern bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, central heating/cooling system, WiFi. There is also access to a laundry room that was originally bathrooms separate from the houses, not completed until 1957. What has been maintained is the simple architectural features of the house, the original plank flooring, high ceilings, a private backyard patio with access to a shared coyote fence ramada in the back lot. It is across the street from the Centennial Park and all the major museums which were the agricultural fields of old Albuquerque over 100 years ago. To view the larger casita that is located in the same compound, refer to listing 3895291. This makes a wonderful multi-unit for extended families or friends vacationing together.

About Kris Linton

I am a retired therapist who has always loved local history and architecture in Albuquerque, my native home. My husband and I have lived in and renovated old homes for over 35 years. We have one daughter who lives in London and also loves old buildings.

Kris Linton purchased this house in 2014

Why Kris Linton chose Albuquerque

It had been for sale for over 3 years and 3 of the 4 homes on the property were not inhabitable. Because of its wonderful location close to Old Town and across the street from the park, we were afraid someone may raze the old buildings and build something modern. We loved the old modest adobes.

What makes this house unique

We have made every effort to maintain the integrity of these old houses while providing modern conveniences that 21st century families expect. We have worked side by side with craftsmen that work with adobes, tin roofs, hand plastering and technicians that have made electrical wires, heating elements and plumbing features as discreet as possible.

First time using Homeaway and it was a great experience. Our home was so comfortable and offered so many little extras. The property is walking distance to Old Town, museums, and lovely park across the street. The home is decorated with the warmth of a quaint Albuquerque home. Thanks to the owners, Kris and Terry, for sharing their lovely home.

My family of 3 stayed in this cozy house for 3 days during Thanksgiving holiday. They did a GREAT job remodeling and totally gives you the flavor of NM. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. If you like authentic, don't mind coziness, and want to be close to Old Town this place is for you. :-). Kris was awesome, super responsive and super friendly. Only small drawback is the bathroom is teeny, tiny - but that's the way it was, way back when.

The casita is within easy walking distance of the Old Town plaza, the place itself is nicely restored and nicely decorated, and the fruit empenadas Kris left for our arrival were delicious. Kris was very prompt with all communications. Highly recommended.

Location, Charm, and all the comforts of home!

What a darling casita - so clean, so nicely decorated, and with all the comforts of home -- including the invitation to help ourselves to the veggie garden - which, by the way, was fabulous! The location was perfect for attending my conference (just a 10 minute way through the beautiful park), visiting museums, taking hikes through the many wonderful parks in this city, visiting Old Town, and finding yummy restaurants. Each evening we enjoyed a fire in the fire kiva and even took advantage of the terrific grill so we could "stay in" and enjoy this sweet gem. Thank you Kris, for being such a gracious host! We will definitely return if we are back in Albuquerque!

Owner's Response: We feel it is a privilege to have the guests that we have had. So many of them (like above!) are so open to trying and seeing new things in the locale. It is a great opportunity for us to show off the old adobes and have visitors see how they were part of a rural neighborhood, at one time, of old Albuquerque. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our love of the history of Old Town.

Delightful Stay

From the moment I came through the door of this Casita, I felt at home. From the empanadas that Kris left on the kitchen table to greet me to all of the small thoughtful things that she included throughout the Casita, I had everything I needed. Kris dropped by a couple of times when I was outside and I really enjoyed my visits with her.

I was staying alone and felt very safe in the area. Truly this is a unique, special place. I will be coming back to Albuquerque and I will stay here again if it's available!

In compliance with plumbing codes since it is small, the bathroom is a "wet room" which means the entire floor and 3 of the walls are sealed. A shelf in the room was found in one of the old houses and refinished.

The headboard was found in one of the old houses. The door was handpainted in the tradition of Santa Fe's La Fonda Hotel and protected with polyurethene which also provides an element of privacy.
