A spacious and lovingly restored house with stunning views in the centre of Alcoutim, a delightful village by the River Guadiana. The house has 3 double rooms and 2 bathrooms.
The house has been recently restored, by the owners, in a modern but traditional style. All the rooms are spacious, light and airy. There are two outdoor spaces, the private courtyard with a shaded dining area and a view down to the river, then there are steps up to the roof terrace where there is a sun lounge area and fantastic views of Alcoutim, the river and across to Spain.
Casa Andorinha is an ideal place for those who love the countryside and a river scene but who also want to experience traditional Portuguese life away from the busy coastal areas. Situated an hour from Faro Airport and half an hour from the coast, the charming village of Alcoutim is found on the banks of the magnificent River Guadiana, the border between Spain and Portugal. The house is located on a quiet cobbled street near the river and close to the centre where there are a choice of cafes and restaurants serving local dishes many with riverside views. Across the river is the typical Andalusian village of Sanlucar where one can enjoy a Tapas and watch the sun set over Alcoutim. A regular ferry service runs between the two villages.
The beautiful hills and countryside that surround the villages are wonderful for walking, bird-watching and biking with many paths and tracks to follow through the valleys of olive and almond trees. The river is a great place to get out on the water, with local kayak hire available or charter a boat to take you up river. For the more adventurous there is a 800m Zip Wire which carries you from near the castle in Sanlucar over the river and lands in Alcoutim. For those wanting to relax , swim and sunbathe there is the delightful fresh water beach close to the village, and a popular place for a picnic amongst the shade of the trees.
A hire car is recommended as public transport is limited and it allows for days out. Within ½ hour there are a variety of beautiful un-crowded beaches to discover on the Eastern Algarve, and the nearest towns of Vila Real and Tavira are great places to wander around the pedestrian cobbled streets both for shopping and eating out. For those wanting to see more of the interior of Portugal, head north to the Alentejo, and the stunning Moorish town of Mertola in the Guadiana National Park..
Christian and I bought Casa Andorinha as a ruin in 2005, we then spent the next 6 years renovating the property ourselves which was a lot of hard work but enjoyable. While we were working our two teenage daughters Lily and Maya went to school llocally in Alcoutim village. At the end of the day we all went home by boat to our land on the banks of the Guadiana 1km down river from Alcouitm on the Spanish side. There we live surrounded by our animals and garden.
In our previous life Christian was a school teacher, specialising in French, German and Spanish. In his holidays he loved to sail which is how we came here in 1997 by boat and never left!
I grew up in England studied Architecture at University but soon realised that working in an office was not for me and that working outdoors with my hands was how I wanted to live my life. So re-building Casa Andorinha was a great way of combining work, my interest in old building and being a Mum!
Now that the work is done we are both enjoying taking things a bit easier and having the chance to be more sociable and meeting new people.

We just retired from the US and were going to travel to Europe for a year. We chose Portugal and Spain to be our first 3-month stay and found this lovely Alcoutim house as a base to travel to Spain, Portugal, Algarve, etc. In all, we headquartered in Alcoutim for 2.5 months. It was a perfect place for that central setup as we did a lot of travel to Sevilla, Ronda, the Algarve, Sagres, Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, and Cascais. When back in Alcoutim, it was a nice, slower pace in a really beautiful area along the Guadiana River. The house was perfect for our needs and is very well equipped. The wifi worked very well and the kitchen was also well stocked. The deck downstairs and upstairs were great for relaxing and reading. It was perfect 'down' time. The beds were comfortable and we even had wood to burn in the free-standing stove in the kitchen area that was welcomed as the nights got cooler. I have to say meeting the owners, Polly & Christian, was a decided treat. They are fun, charming, extremely accommodating, friendly, engaging, and gave us all the space we needed in a rental. They also provided a lot of info about the village, where to go for shopping, where to eat, where to get a good vet, inside 'tips' on their fellow villagers. We even had many interesting and pointed political talks about the US election (nobody understands the Trump phenomenon) and Brexit as they are well versed in politics, economic matters, and even entertainment (books, movies, music, etc.). I am not sure we'll ever go back there but I can't more highly praise our experience with this house and its owners. In addition, they welcomed our small dog as part of the family. There also is plenty to do along the river and outdoor activities. The setting is peaceful and quiet but again, a great place to see the Algarve (plenty of towns and beaches to visit and trips into Spain as Sevilla is only a 2-hour drive). Thanks, Polly and Christian, Lilly, and Maya for such excellent hospitality. (A side note, we found the best Indian food at Shiva near the center of town that rivaled anything we've had in the US.)
We stayed along with another couple at this beautiful apartment in Alcoutim from April 16-29th, 2016. Alcoutim is a beautiful little town on the Spanish border and the apartment is special in every way. It is well equipped for two couples or a large family. The kitchen is fully equipped with all you need for great meals and there are a number of good restaurants nearby. The terrace is a nice place to eat and the top balcony provides a spectacular view of the river and Spanish town. Pollyanna was a great host and helped us with tourist information for the surrounding area. Alcoutim is only 30 minutes from the beaches on the Algarve and there are many towns and beaches to explore. We would highly recommend this stay. Ed and Claudine, Canada.
This house is absolutely incredible! I have never seen a kitchen like this in Europe. It was well equipped just like the rest of the house. The place was extremely spacious more so than the photos show. On the patio and terrace you have a picturesque view of Sanlucar de Guadiana, Spain and you are even able to watch as people zipline from Spain to Portugal. My friends and I were very pleased with our stay here which made it difficult for us to leave.
We stayed for 12 nights and were very reluctant to leave. The house has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard and the attention to detail in the décor and furnishing is outstanding. The kitchen is well equipped with cooking utensils and appliances which was perfect for a self catering holiday. The bathroom has a large bath and wonderful walk in shower, there is also another shower room with the same style walk in shower and there was always plenty of hot water. There are two terraces for eating out on and for sitting out and enjoying the glorious weather. We had a car so were able to do a lot of exploring of the surrounding area, there are some lovely villages along the river and further inland that are well worth the drive. We were spoilt for choice when it came to walks with designated footpaths, they were doted around everywhere. The owners are a truly lovely couple and could not have been more helpful in advising on things to do in and around the village. They really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Our stay in Casa Andorinha was relaxing, comfortable and we would not hesitate in recommending to family and friends. Thank you Christian and Polly for making our stay in Alcoutim memorable.
