About this property

5BR Hilltop Wine country home w pool and spectacular views near Alba and Barolo

As far as "enogastronomic" touring, wine country hiking and road cycling destinations go, this area cannot be beat. As a base from which to explore the area, I have a restored but still rustic country home on a hilltop surrounded by vineyards of the Langhe Roero and Asti areas, with views to the alps. Ideal for families and groups up to 12 people. Five bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, large family room / kitchen with fireplace. Outdoor cooking, dining and entertaining areas with barbecue and pizza oven, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fruit trees, herb garden, 4 car carport, solar panels. A real home, not a hotel-style rental property. Short drive to Alba, Barolo, Barbaresco, Canale, Asti and less than 1 hr from Torino. When not rented this remains my home, so care and respect are necessary ingredients. Additional pictures available on request.
Custom tours, catering services, bicycle or Vespa rentals, horse rides, wine tastings and much more can be organized on request.

Just perfect for a three generation, very happy family holiday
Mart’s pre-holiday advice and information were spot on. So were his directions! This meant that we had a good idea of what to expect when we arrived and that the welcome would be warm and friendly. It felt like we were staying in a friend’s home, full of character, not one of those holiday houses with little ambience. The atmosphere of trust was really relaxing. With three generations, the setting, facilities and informality worked particularly well. We could walk, talk, swim, cook, play and enjoy the stunning views, just as we wanted. Baloo, the dog, was a big hit with our grandchildren, too! The ‘open house’ approach where we could use basics (olive oil, tea, coffee etc) made us feel at home quickly, while acting as a good starter for shopping lists. We loved all our al fresco meals, including BBQs and celebratory dinners. (Smoke from the barbecue and citronella kept biting things away quite well, too.) We had a lot of laughs over trying to work out which switches controlled which lights on those occasions! Mart offered to organise various trips and treats for us, which we really appreciated and the wine-tasting at Ca’Rossa will live long in the memory. (Yes, Mart, we did manage to take four bottles home in our suitcases!) Mart was very thoughtful in briefing us about any comings & goings (cleaner, gardener etc) and prompt in problem-solving when the dishwasher stopped working briefly. That’s just what you hope for - that if there are any problems, they will be resolved quickly and so they were. It all added up to a wonderful stay. We were very reluctant to leave, not least as the house, garden and surrounding vineyards are so photogenic and there is so much more exploring to do. We would all love to return. Thank you for a very memorable fortnight.

Lovely family holiday in the vineyards
The house is very much the host’s personal home, and as such not a typical holiday let. It is quirky and individualistic and very special. We were a large family party of three generations and we all had a wonderful time. The pool is great, the outdoor spaces beautiful and the views awesome. The really special thing about the place, however, is the way the owner Mart seemed to know exactly the perfect places to recommend for us. He organised wine tastings, suggested restaurant visits and arranged for a pizza chef to come to do a tutorial for us around the pizza oven. Mart and his amazing dog, baloo, were a real asset to our stay. He was staying nearby and on hand to arrange a cot for a child when we’d forgotten to ask for one and was always friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The only suggestion I could make to improving the holiday experience would be better mattresses and better bed linen. Both were a little worn. The villa, however, was clean and there was plenty of hot water and other necessities. This was a great place to stay. We had a memorable holiday.

Beautiful villa set in the middle of the most amazing countrysie
The villa is a refurbished farmhouse but that understates its grandeur. The size of the property take a while to get your head around. The pool was perfect as was the location. The host was extremely helpful but kept out of our way. Perfect for a family getaway.

Piedmont paradise.
Magnificent hilltop rural setting.Spacious large family home exhibiting the features of 18th century architecture of the region.Large pool in pretty garden setting and views over the vineclad hills. On a clear day the snow clad alps can be seen.Mart was a fabulous host and could not have been more helpful in all respects. We found it very central for ease of visiting the sights and attractions of this great food and wine region. It is an easy 2 hour drive from Malpensa airport. We would love to return .

About the host

Host profile image
I have been a resident in Piedmont since 1988 and have always enjoyed sharing the beauty of this place with friends and visitors. Food and wine have become my passions and also a great way to meet new people. I have a 'short list' of favorite local wine producers and restaurants but I still feel like I am a beginner, a kid in a candy shop. I am happy to make introductions and suggestions.
My three girls are now grown up have left the nest for far and wide. I want to keep the house, but don't need to live in it full time. It is a place that deserves to be shared and loved. This house has been home for all of us and has grown with us, restored and improved bit by bit over these 20+ years (with many more improvement projects in the hopper). We are travelers and the house reflects that, with lots of objects and details that are very personal (and sometimes quirky) and tell stories. There are lots of books to read and browse, including guide books of the area. I can be around during rentals or not, depending on the preference of renters. I enjoy meeting people and am happy to share my knowledge of and appreciation for this area. I am also happy to participate in local tours, shopping, cooking, wine tasting, singing, ping pong games and other good times. I hope that guests will contribute ideas, thoughts, reflections, advice and suggestions for improvement in benefit for future guests.
The name "il mestolo", literally a ladle, is intended to suggest the stirring, mixing and tasting of various ingredients put together. We have had seminars, parties, reunions, retreats, concerts - of all kinds and have enjoyed them all.
Every opportunity to learn is a gift. Every new person we meet presents an opportunity to learn. I look forward to meeting you.

Why they chose this property

When you see it you will know. When I first saw it in 1997 it was just a country house on a hill, in need of a lot of work, but what a location!! (What were those 3 important things? Location, location and location?) Now I think the house and garden area are nearly up to the level of the views. Some of the house is still "in the rough", but that's one of the fun things about being here - you can imagine the next set of improvements. Most people who have spent time here use words like 'magical' to describe it. Very good energy. There are multiple 'outdoor rooms', different gathering places for different times of the day or for different sub-groups of your party. In the summer the pool is an obvious point of convergence but the indoor spaces are also special and accommodating. The spaces lend themselves to groups and sharing.

What makes this property unique

Amazing views, peace and quiet, lots of character. Great space for cooking together.
