Actually arriving at the Villa and seeing it for ourselves was 100 times better than the pictures. The view always changes from early morning at sunrise and chiming bells from the port town through to night time with boats, bars and restaurants lighting up the town. Dream about returning one day and bobbing in the cold deep pool, cocktail in hand, looking out to sea. The property was clean; given the 300 plus steps up to the Villa it was good to have some supplies already in the house but a few little extras would have been good to get us started. Be prepared that this is an island that does not have a sophisticated sewage system so care is needed with what one flushes down - definitely not paper! Would recommend this property to everyone who can manage the walk up. We loved it.
Our family (parents and teens) spent a fabulous week here in June. We continue to rave about the house and its wonderful caretaker, Maria. From the moment we arrived very weary from 24 hours of travel, and were met by Spiro and his donkeys, and handed glasses of cool water after our climb from the harbor by Maria, we knew it would be a perfect stay. The view was unforgettable at any time of the day, and at night it was superb to sit and watch the sunset over the sea and the lights come on in the town. We swam in the pool many times a day and were very, very happy to have that option when we did not feel like hiking down to swim off the rocks across the harbor. The breezes were wonderful throughout the house and made sleeping pleasant. The small kitchen was adequate for our very limited needs (we dined in town once or twice a day). Maria had wonderful dining and hiking suggestions, and arranged for a lovely Hydriot to come and cook a dinner for us. She also helped arrange for us to bring our luggage down the night before our early morning ferry. I have raved to many friends about this spot and would w/o reservation come again.
We came here on our honeymoon and it was the ideal place to stay for a relaxed, peaceful, get away. The house is up the hill on one side of the harbour so you have to be happy walking up steps for 5-10 mins or getting a donkey! This was fine for us and would take less than ten minutes to get to and from the town. Besides after walking up there was always the pool to greet us! Inside the house it is relatively simple with the main living area open plan. The lounge has a high ceiling and feels airy and spacious at the same time as being comfortable. Up approx half a dozen steps there is a dining area that is lovely with sea views to other islands. The kitchen is small and functional. The top bedroom again is simple and spacious with great views. We slept in this room but because there is no air conditioning in this property it could get a little hot at night. We were fine as we kept the shutters closed in this room in the day time and had the fans on whilst we slept. The other rooms remained relatively cool through out the day. Also, the toilets and bathrooms are two floors down from this bedroom. The lower ensuite bedroom was much cooler but didn't have the morning views. The ensuite is simple in wet room style with toilet, sink and shower. There is another toilet with sink and a separate bathroom which is uniquely built into the rock face. We were warned that there may be a problem with water pressure at certain times of the day (i.e. when most of Hydra Town are taking a shower!) but we only experienced having no water once. Overall the house is very pleasant and lovely to spend time in if you've had enough of being outdoors! Very roomy for 4 people though the house is not suitable for young children because of the open stairs and the drops from the outside area.
The main selling point for me was the outdoor area...it has been done well and is spacious and aesthetically pleasing - with two sun loungers, a table, chairs and umbrella, plus seating that is part of the wall. There are two umbrellas to provide plenty of shade. The pool was amazing for a cool dip and little swim and one can look over the harbour whilst in it. It is also clean and deep enough to dive into. Then there are the views...you can see all of the town, over the harbour and out to sea...they were truly stunning. Although the rest of the island is great we were happy to spend days not leaving the villa and viewing the comings and goings from the terrace. Beautiful and peaceful location.
