Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom Cabana, Full Kitchen, Sea View, 30 Seconds From the Caribbean

From our air-conditioned thatched-roof cabana, you can see the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean. We clocked it--30 seconds from our front porch to having your toes in the water. The view is spectacular. This is a get-away-from-it-all vacation spot. If you're looking for a party atmosphere, you won't enjoy our cabana. This is an ideal spot for people looking for peace and tranquility. No traffic noise other than the occasional boat, just that beautiful breeze whispering through the palm trees. Our resort has an on-site restaurant and bar, so you don't have to go anywhere the whole time you're staying here, if you don't want. Relax and enjoy the beach.

Our one-bedroom cabana is comfortably furnished. The king size bed frame is made of local hardwoods, as are the kitchen cabinets, and the furniture in the kitchen and living room. Full kitchen with refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, blender, stove and oven. Dishes, pots and pans, and linens provided. Daily housekeeping is not provided for guests who book directly with us, but is available for $10 per day, time permitting. Restaurant and bar on site, plus a dive shop on site, for diving, snorkeling, and fishing excursions! You might be visited by an iguana or two if you're lucky. From our front porch, you have a great view of the water, and it takes just 30 seconds walking normally to get your toes in the Caribbean.

Our resort has wifi so if you MUST work, you can... or you can send pictures to your friends and family back home. A vacation is more fun if your loved ones are jealous of you. The wifi in our unit works well enough that I'm able to stream Netflix.

The Road North (as they call the only road that comes up the length of the island) passes directly behind our resort, so it's very easy to get back and forth to town or the other resorts. Most people on the island travel by golf cart, and our staff can arrange to have one delivered to you if you want to explore. There's a small grocery store not too far away that has all the essentials. If you want, you can even order your groceries in advance to have them waiting for you when you arrive. Ask me for details when you make your reservation.

Please note: When you arrive at the resort, you will need to provide a credit card to pay 9% Belize hotel tax, 1.75% business tax, and 5% service charge.

About Jenel Looney

We spent 10 years as expats in the Middle East, and when we returned home to Texas, we got a little restless. Belize was the perfect place for us to buy a vacation home, since it's only a little over two hours from Houston to Belize City, and then a quick puddle jumper to Ambergris Caye. Larry liked that English is the national language in Belize, and Jenel liked that the exchange rate is 2:1, so the math is super easy.

Jenel Looney purchased this condo in 2009

Why Jenel Looney chose Ambergris Caye

The moment we stepped onto the beautiful, white sand beach at our resort, we fell in love. In our opinion, this is the most beautiful beach on Ambergris Caye. The decorative thatched roofs make it look like a high-end version of Gilligan's Island, while the concrete construction is far safer and sturdier than anything the Professor could dream up. The resort just keeps getting better and better, especially with the addition of the restaurant. The little poolside tiki bar offers a casual menu if you don't feel like going inside. The dive shop on site can take you snorkeling or scuba diving at some of the most spectacular dive spots in the world, or on a fishing trip for fish or lobster (in season). With wifi, I can catch up on work right there in the living room before spending the rest of the day at play. If you want a party-style vacation, this might not be the right place for you. But if what you're looking for is a low-key, phenomenal relaxation experience, you'll love it.

What makes this condo unique

Our unit is called a Cabana unit, and there are only six of this style at the resort. They're much closer to the water than the other one-bedroom units, they're larger, and they have vaulted ceilings that make the place feel even more spacious and luxurious. The full kitchen is nice if you don't feel like eating out every meal. It has a good sized refrigerator, plus a stovetop, oven, and microwave. I'm an avid cook, so I furnished the place with high quality pots, pans, and utensils.

The wifi works particularly well in our unit because of its proximity to the doohickey that sends the signal. ("Doohickey" is the technical term.) I uploaded very large video files while at the resort, and the upload went quickly. I also watched Netflix streaming while cooking, and didn't have any problems at all.

Notes:
World-class snorkeling and scuba diving at the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, second only to the Great Barrier Reef, and there's a dive shop right at our resort. Swim with sharks, sting rays, and sea turtles. There are very few cars on Ambergris Caye. In San Pedro, most people use golf carts. We rent a golf cart and drive back and forth to our resort, which is super fun, riding on the road that goes right up the island behind our resort. If that doesn't sound like fun to you, you can rely on water taxis to go get groceries or take an adventure tour or try some of the restaurants and bars in town. Our resort has a dive shop on site. Book diving, snorkeling, and fishing excursions at the front desk. Daily housekeeping is available for an additional $10 per day.

Beautiful Beach, Awesome Resort

  • 5 of 5

10 Days was not nearly enough to get rid of the winter blues. The house, resort, beach and staff were all amazing. No Worries tours were very accommodating with helping us book our tours. The staff always kept our room clean and fresh towels for the beach. Golf cart rentals are a must as the resort is not very close to anything, but that is a big part of the attraction for this resort for us. We look forward to another visit in the future.

Had a great time

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our vacation in Belize. The condo basically had everything we needed. A couple of the electrical outlets didn't work in the kitchen, we had to plug into the floor outlet for coffee and toast. But it didn't really bother us. We didn't try the stove as we planned on eating dinner out. The restaurant there was mediocre. We did find some other places for good food, it was a drive in our golf cart but it was fun. If you want a place to really get away from it all, this is the place. We kept wishing there were some screens in the windows, after being inside in Michigan for months we wanted fresh air to breath in the house, but did not want to invite lizards and bugs in. There were no planes flying overhead, no jet skies, very few boats, it was super quiet. The people who work there are top notch, very accommodating and helpful. It is a pretty long hike in a golf cart to get to town. The road is dusty, dirty, bumpy and full of potholes. At first we didn't know what to think but it all became part of the fun of the trip. The biggest drawback was the litter; plastic pollution on the beaches on either side of the resort and in fact everywhere except for the resorts who kept their beaches cleaned. It was sad to see such a beautiful country with so much litter. It was a wide awakening for us to see the effects of plastic pollution. All in all, we had a great time, met some really nice people and will be back someday we hope! The snorkeling there especially at Mexico Rocks was outstanding!

Owner's Response: Oh, that's so great to hear! Thanks for staying in our cabana. We're thrilled that you loved our little home-away-from-home as much as we do. The staff really have a heart for guests, and they do everything in their power to make sure that every guest has the best vacation ever. Hope you had the chance to try out a beach massage from the masseuse on staff. Hope you can visit us again!

Very nice getaway location.

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property for a four night stay at the end of a ten night vacation in Belize. We were looking for a place to 'chill' and it was perfect for that. The condo was clean and nicely decorated with a well equipped kitchen. The grounds and beach are well maintained, although there is still some evidence of the hurricane. Just be advised that if you plan to do your own cooking, you will need to bring not only your food, but seasoning and basics like flour and oil. There were salt and pepper shakers, but that was it. We brought our groceries from San Pedro (you'll need a cooler), but you can order them online and have them delivered before your arrival, too. We didn't eat at the restaurant at the resort. It just doesn't have a tropical ambiance - not even a beach view. The pool bar is handy if you're hanging out at the pools - not so much if you're on the beach. No wait service, either.

Keep in mind that you're not close to much of anything at this resort. If you're looking for nightlife, this isn't the place to be unless you don't mind 30 minute rides into San Pedro. If you're looking for a quiet beach to lay out and read, you found the right place. That's exactly what we did for the first part of our visit here. Then we discovered a golf cart path heading northward up the beach that took us , by foot, to a beautiful resort called El Secreto. We spent the afternoon at their pool/bar and then had dinner there. Excellent! They then took us back to Sapphire Beach with their boat free of charge. If you don't want to walk, they will pick you up and return you by boat, free of charge. Other couples from Sapphire Beach used this service as well. We highly recommend it.

The following day we hiked even further to the north and ended up at Tranquility Bay Resort. It's not as luxurious as El Secreto, but you can snorkel from shore. And it's secluded - thus the name. We weren't equipped to stay, so we returned to Sapphire Beach and had them pick us up, with our snorkel gear and a change of clothes, shortly after lunch. We spent the afternoon snorkeling (nurse sharks, rays, and many colorful fish and corals) and hanging out at their beach. We then had one of the most delicious seafood dinners of our trip. They do charge a nominal fee for the boat service, but it's well worth it. Our transportation, bar bill, and dinner bill was about the same as a two hour snorkel charter would have been.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Robert! So glad you enjoyed your stay. It's too bad you didn't try our on-site restaurant. Gem has really delicious food! If you come back to see us, ask Tony to deliver your dinner to our cabana so you can sit on the front porch and have dinner with a sea view. All the best to you! Jenel and Larry

Nice property and staff.

This property is out of town, golf cart a must. Everything cost more, snorkeling trip $ 70.00us. Beautiful pools. Beaches in this area not great, still trash and damage from Aug. Hurricane. I would not go back.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. It's true, all excursions on the island of Ambergris Caye cost money, no matter where you stay. Please be sure to include snorkeling or scuba diving in your budget, though, because that is definitely the best way to enjoy the island! Our on-site dive shop's prices are lower than many other options on the island, and they pick you up right at our dock. Sadly, Hurricane Earl damaged or destroyed 90% of the docks on Ambergris Caye, so we were thrilled that our dock was repaired as quickly as it was. It is taking longer than we'd like for all the debris to be removed, though, because there was just so much of it. Fortunately, our all concrete constructed condos didn't suffer any damage at all, other than some ruffling to the thatched roofs. We were very fortunate! Some of the wood structures didn't fare as well. We do recommend that our guests rent a golf cart during their stay, as it's the best way to explore the island on your own schedule. However, you can also get a Coastal Xpress water taxi weekly pass, which is quite affordable. Coastal Xpress has about eight runs per day, so you still have a lot of flexibility.

Our unit is at a resort about nine miles north of San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize. This is an ideal vacation spot for travelers who want to relax, kick back, and enjoy the most beautiful beach on the island. With a full kitchen in your unit and a spectacular restaurant and tiki bar on site, you don't need to leave at all if you don't want to. However, it's an easy and beautiful boat ride or golf cart ride away from shops, more restaurants, and local tours. In addition to our resort's restaurant, there are three others within walking distance, plus Bar El Norte, a little beach-shack kind of bar that will appeal to lovers of all things quirky. Adventure travelers will enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, exploring the Mayan ruins of Belize, and more. There's a dive shop on site that can book all your excursions for you, whether in the water or on land. Belize boasts the second largest barrier reef in the world, and the world-famous Blue Hole, which should be on every scuba diver's bucket list. Bird watchers, too, will enjoy the stay, to see as many of the 587+ bird species as possible. Since our resort is away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, you can hear the birds calling to each other from the trees. It's quite pleasant to walk along the beach and through the surrounding trees, then stop at a nearby resort for a drink before meandering back home. Our home has concrete construction and a decorative thatch roof, so it looks right at home in the jungle but feels solid, cozy, and well insulated. Fully air conditioned!
