Kentigern - Beach House with Penthouse views of Chesapeake Bay

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 9-11)

Savor dramatic penthouse views in your own private beach house. This light-filled four-story house offers the best in outdoor luxury living. Surrounded by glass and balconies on every level, Kentigern provides bedrooms with private balconies and great gathering spaces, all in one home. Enjoy the fun of your group and then retreat to your own space. Fall asleep to the sound of waves in the background. Wake up to fabulous sunrises over the Chesapeake Bay. This is a house you won’t want to leave.

Kentigern is sited on its own 2 acre sandy lot with a beach at the south end. For the adventurer, 2 kayaks on premise are provided for guest use. Kayak directly on the Chesapeake Bay or in the quiet solitude of one of the creeks where you and the herons may be the only guests. This house is an away destination: Herons are joined by osprey, bald eagles, pelicans and the occasional dolphin or two.

Scotland is steeped in history, too. St. Mary’s City, 10 miles away, is the original capital of Maryland. The area dates back to the 1600s and was one of the early colonies. Only 80 miles away is the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – if you can drag yourself away from the beautiful beach setting. Point Lookout Park, a Civil War POW camp and now a large park and campground, is only a short bike ride away. Nestled between the Bay and the Potomac River, the Park is worth an expedition.

Return to Kentigern again and again.

Great property; just needs some love

  • 4 of 5

Really liked the building and site. Nice sandy beach and great campfire. Our only concern was that the property needs a bit of love to refurnish it back to the quality that it probably was when first built. The outside needs a good power washing to get rid of the spiders and webs along with a coat of paint on all surfaces. The elevator was good, but would be better if the light bulbs were not burnt out so we rode in the dark. The soft furnishings need replacement as they are aged and worn generally. The dish sets would be best if all matched and the pots and pans in better condition. Wifi was good along with the flat screens. The place can be brought up to speed at limited cost and be the best on the beach! I'm sure the Owner will address these issues ASAP as the property is worth the effort. Have a great time at the property.

Unparalleled view.

  • 4 of 5

The house is awesome with a view that can't be beat. When standing on the balcony looking out over the Bay, it is like standing on the bridge of a ship. Four floors with an elevator. The house is very nicely laid out but could use a better cleaning and an upgrade of appliances and outside furniture. The "private" beach for the various rentals was very nice but had a LOT of jellyfish this year.

Owner's Response: We love to have returning guests. But, we're not sure what is meant about upgraded appliances since the kitchen appliances are very high end, including a Bosch oven and microwave and a large Italian gas range. The house is cleaned by professional cleaners between each group of guests and inspected. It's always good to get a deep cleaning of things like baseboards but that can be difficult during high season. Still, we try our best and assure guests that this house is clean. Sometimes the outdoor furniture needs a rinse off - no matter how often we do so with windy beach conditions, but we'll make an effort to concentrate more on the outdoor furniture. As for the jellyfish, we hardly had any this year. Unfortunately, his week was not lucky. Jellyfish love high salinity, so when it's been hot and dry, they show up in the Bay. Most of this summer, we had sufficient rain to keep them away. Unfortunately, when and where jellyfish will show up is unpredictable. June is almost always safe. July and early August depend on the amount of rain. I route for summer thunderstorms! They are amazing to watch over the Bay and they send the jellyfish packing.

Always a 5 STAR stay in Scotland

  • 5 of 5

It is ALWAYS a 5 STAR stay when we stay at any of Peggy's properties in Scotland. We go back year after year--multiple times in a year. We absolutely love everything about Scotland.

The Kentigern is one of out favorites! This year we got to experience some pretty memorable new things during our stay. We enjoyed viewing the "Strawberry Moon" over the Bay each night. Our other very memorable experience occurred when we were kayaking around 8 PM at night. We were headed back to the Kentigern from the Inlet. As we paddled toward the beach of the Kentigern we noticed multiple fins in the water. On first glance we were sure they we shark...but as we watched we realized the fins were porpoising thru the water---straight towards us! It was a entire pod of dolphins!! We counted about 10-12 of them. Out of respect for the magnificant creatures we paddled straight to shore and observed them from the beach. It was a fabulous and frightening experience.

Our visit was in mid June and the jellyfish have already started making their appearance. Their number will most likely be greater for our return in July. I'm sure if Peggy could control the Jellyfish for her guests, she would--but unfortunately it's Mother Nature's problem. We did notice last year that when we went to Point Lookout Park there were no jellyfish in the water there. So that might be out solution to cooling off our dog and ourselves if the Jellyfish are too great in number. Although--I think a Scotland Yards Community Pool would be a fabulous attraction...wink, wink. :)

Owner's Response: Great minds think alike. We are considering a community pool and trying to figure out what land we would need to acquire to build one. In the meantime, the jellyfish are impossible to predict. Because we've had a lot of rain they have stayed away for the most part, even though it's mid-July.
