Our home is a beautiful 2 bedroom, 1.75 bath cathedral-ceiling, pine interior house, located in Hulls Cove. It is located on the main road to Bar Harbor, but set well back from the road on a huge meadow, so although there is no fenced yard, it is perfect for friendly and well-behaved pups! (There is a detached garage/apartment next to the house, which houses our awesome property managers and their wonderful beagle/Australian cattle dog pup, Kebo, who's always happy to welcome you to the property!) The master bedroom has a king bed, and is up a spiral staircase in a loft, with a 1.75 bath. The second bedroom is downstairs located off the kitchen/living room/dining room, and has a queen bed. The full bath is also downstairs. The house has an open floor plan, with a fully-stocked kitchen (and of course, a lobster pot and lobster-eating essentials!), washer/dryer, TV (DVR and HBO), BBQ grill, wrap around deck, and outdoor seating on the deck and the lawn. We have a hammock to lounge in while you enjoy the Maine afternoon breeze. During late-July and August, we have blueberries in the meadow that you can eat off the bush, and small wild strawberries, if you look for them! If you want to wander around Acadia, there is a park entrance with carriage trails a mile away, and if you prefer to catch a boat ride or a whale watch, town and the pier are ~4 miles away. There is only one sand beach on the Island, and it's about 15 minutes from us, but there is a beautiful pebble beach about 1/2 mile away, which is a spectacular place to watch the sun or the moon rise.
We hope we get the opportunity to share our home with you!
Matt and I met in college while we were both enrolled at University of Colorado, but we were on a study abroad in Iceland. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and he grew up right on Cottage St. in downtown Bar Harbor. We decided to move to Maine together in 2003 and haven't looked back! We have three dogs right now, an Australian kelpie and two Australian cattle dogs. In 2013, we began fostering Australian cattle dogs through the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association. We've fostered 16 dogs since we started, including a mom and her 9 3.5-week-old pups, one of which being our resident property-greeter, Kebo (named after Bar Harbor's historic golf course). We got married in 2006, and in 2007, I started working as a marine mammal biologist in Alaska. Last year, in 2014, Matt also started working in Alaska as a boat captain. This year, we decided to give it a shot living in Anchorage for the summer, so our home is available for rent. We love our home, and hope you will too!
Sasha and Matt McFarland purchased this house in 2005
Matt grew up in Bar Harbor, and quickly showed me everything there is to love about the area. We lived there for two years before we decided we wanted to settle there. The bustle of the town during the summer, followed by the quietude of the winter make it a perfect little haven.
We lucked out with the location of our home. We are located close to town, the ocean, and Acadia National Park, and less than a mile from Pirate's Cove Mini Golf, but are also off the main road enough that it is a quiet and peaceful location. Our back yard is a huge meadow full of wildflowers and blueberries, sunrises and sunsets, lightening bugs, birds (including some resident barred owls that tend to roost on our trees and call throughout the summer, hummingbirds, and lots of songbirds), and deer, and a perfect shaded area to relax in the hammock or BBQ on the deck.
We bought our house because we walked in and instantly fell in love. It's a very easy place to fall in love with. The floor plan and the beautiful pine interior, plus the vast meadow in the back, complete with blueberries, wildflowers, painted sunsets and starry skies made the place our little piece of heaven.
This summer, both of us are working on a boat in Alaska, so our home is vacant and we have the opportunity to share it with vacationers. We hope you love it as much as we do!
The place was well maintained, roomy, quiet and had everything we needed for our home away from home. It is a short drive from everything we wanted to see on Mount Desert Island. We spent a lot of time in Acadia National Park, exploring Bar Harbor, the backroads of the island and small towns on the quiet side of the island. We enjoyed eating breakfast there and several evening meals.
This was a great base from which to visit all Mt. Desert has to offer. Open floor plan with large windows facing a beautiful meadow where we saw deer in the mornings while drinking our coffee. Very comfortable home, outfitted with lots of movies and games (not that we needed them because the weather was great and we were outside most of the time). Kitchen was well-equipped, and the place was super clean and comfortable. It is down a long driveway from Route 3, not far from the Acadia entrance, but while inside or walking in the meadow, you'd never know you were in a busy tourist area. Thanks Sasha and Matt for sharing your very cool place!
This was a very nice place. Very well kept in a beautiful area located several miles out of Bar Harbor and close to the Hulls Cove entrance to Acadia National Park. The property itself backs up to a big field if you want to take a walk. We used it as a home base to do things all over the island. The owners are quick to respond to questions and were very helpful. I can't say enough good things about this property other than you won't be disappointed.
We enjoyed a 4 night stay in this clean, well maintained house. The location was very convenient as we were about a mile from Acadia National park and a couple of miles from Bar Harbor. The house is set back from Route 3 some distance so that it was very quiet. The kitchen was well stocked and the washer and dryer came in very handy as we got caught in a rain shower. The wifi worked well and we really enjoyed the hot tub after a day of hiking or biking the carriage roads. Our dog had fun playing in the huge meadow behind the house and we also enjoyed visits from the neighbors' friendly dog, Kebo. The owners were very responsive (the internet went out briefly after a lightning storm) and left a welcome basket of goodies (the maple syrup was great when we made blueberry pancakes).
Our favorite activity was biking the carriage roads. We rented bikes from the Bar Harbor Bike shop including a bike rack for our car. We aren't regular riders, but we had a great time riding from Duck Brook Road (get directions from the Bar Harbor Bike staff) to Jordan Pond, having popovers at the Jordan Pond House and then riding home.
We couldn't have asked for a better vacation. This home was perfect with everything you could need. The view of the meadow was amazing and the hammock & hot tub an added plus. Location was great and we were able to go back & forth easily to Acadia National Park daily for hikes and biking. Would love to go back!
My family had a wonderful time at the Red House in Bar Harbor. The house is prettier, if possible than the photos. The location is perfect for visiting Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and Pirate Cove Mini golf. The Acadia park bus can be picked up right in front of the house. The house was very clean with a kitchen that had everything we needed. Upon our arrival we were welcomed by Kebo , Neal and Cher (the property managers and their dog). Managers were very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this house to my friends and family.
A perfect spot to enjoy leisurely down time or vigorous physical activity, Bar Harbor is home to natural peaceful retreats, quiet, oceanside restaurants, hiking, kayaking, biking, and walking/running places for all ability levels, including the miles of carriage roads through and around Acadia National Park. Also enjoy golfing, whale watching, fishing and other boat trips, movies in our historic cinema or local "Reel Pizza" cinema and pizza parlor, fine and casual dining (must-haves are Jordan's, 2 Cats, and Café This Way for breakfast, an Emmy or Nomad at Side Street Café, and a blackened fish sandwich or salad at the Thirsty Whale!), and a round of mini-golf at Pirate's Cove, just up the street from our house!
