About Steve Young

I grew up in Southern Illinois, and could not wait to 'Get Out,' 'Escape,' and go to the big city. I went to school in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and left Southern Illinois far behind. I thought this was great.

I had a very successful career in the online advertising, marketing, and market research world catering to big pharma. In a normal year I would fly 125,000 miles and see many places, countries and sites.

As I grew older and my 'success' continued I felt more and more that something was missing. I began to yearn for the hills of Southern Illinois, the slower pace of life, and the people I left behind more and more.

I 2013, I came home for a few weeks to help my mother move my father into a nursing home. After this was completed I flew to Milan for business, and on my way back I received a call that my mother had had a stroke. This was a life changing event for me, and I never really went home.

My father spent the year getting worse, and my Mother spent the year getting better. When my father died in December of 2013, I decided to 'officially' move to Southern Illinois in order to spend more time with my mother and be closer with family. I also made the decision to leave the company I worked for and do something simpler, and local to Southern Illinois.

June 1st, 2014 I started my company with the goal to create vacation rental homes in Southern Illinois and help the area grow tourism. Southern Illinois is a beautiful and special place, and I would like to share it with as many people as possible.

Steve Young purchased this house in 2014

Why Steve Young chose Alto Pass

This property was a a two unit rental property located in the quaint town of Alto Pass. The price was right to allow me to completely gut and remodel the back unit. A more organized upstairs with two lovely bedrooms and an amazing bathroom.

The front unit is still rented long term to the couple that was there when i purchased the property. Should they ever decide to leave I will fully refurbish the front unite in order to make two adjacent guesthouses for people coming to Southern Illinois to enjoy the outdoors and wineries.

The proximity to wineries, and area attractions is also great for this property.

Girls weekend in Southern Illinois

  • 5 of 5

This home rental was perfect! We truly enjoyed this two bedroom home. The owner has provided a rental with comfortable furnishings & beds, & a beautiful large shower. The provided snacks & coffee items were much appreciated after the late arrival! Despite the rainy weather this weekend, we really enjoyed the local restaurants & winery. The owner was even helpful & quick to respond to our questions about local restaurants. Would definitely recommend this rental & look forward to staying again in the future!

Nice place for a weekend stay while visiting my daughter at SIU. Good base for exploring nearby sites like the Little Grand Canyon. The fall colors were amazing!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

A very nice place to stay. So quiet and that is exactly what we needed. We explored around town and the different hiking spots. This was our first time there so we at least know the lay of the land the next time we come back. The amenities were perfect!

Highly Recommended - Ready to Return Already!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over Labor Day weekend and were blown away by this property. The inside is beautiful and bright, the beds are comfortable and the shower is fantastic! I wasn't sure if it would be connected to the front house, but there are no conjoining walls, which is nice. I loved that it is steps from the Quetil Trail and the Alto Pass overlook. Do not miss out on this view! After finding a house this beautiful in a quiet location, centrally located to the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail(two wineries within walking distance), close to hiking trails, and dog friendly (VERY important), we will DEFINITELY be back! Steve was so easy to work with and responded within minutes. For anyone who is not familiar with this area of Southern Illinois, there are not a lot of nearby restaurants. You will likely have to trek 25 mins into Carbondale if you want a huge variety(I had no problem with this since I wanted to check out my alma mater anyways.) Also, the restaurants that are nearby close pretty early on Sundays.
