We weren't expecting anything fancy, but this place was worse than we expected - it was a total dump. None of the furniture matched and it was all incredibly uncomfortable. It was dark and bleak. I can't imagine it would pass any kind of inspection if there was such a thing. The room I used was like a cell - the bed took up the whole room and there was one tiny window. The best any of my friends could say about the place was that the shower was clean. That said, the location was great - we walked to the end of the road to enjoy the water - there was a small park there. We walked into town, which is cute.
Pros: Good location if Sackets Harbor is your destination with too many people for a hotel room. This house can easily handle 8 people (possibly a bit easier if some are kids), so if you are doing a family (or close friend thing), this definitely works to save money. The A/C (and heat, if needed) are NEW and work well; the toilet and shower are also new. The old stove and frig also work fairly well. There are two king rooms and a full room with a single just outside the full room (in the old laundry room off the kitchen). While there is real parking for three cars, any extra visitors can still park a bit down the street as it is a dead end and a full two lanes wide. TV is nice too with lots of channels but no DVD Player; but since the TV is brand new (the box was still there), you could bring one and hook it up easily. The outdoor fireplace is a little metal fire pit, which is probably fine for kids that need this (there was some wood available to use) and four outdoor chairs too, though the backyard is only semi-useful.
Cons: The house was not built by a professional and is really a camp that, and this you must accept, has uneven floors and walls and appears to be about to fall down, but, of course, that is not the case. The important systems have been done, but little of the inside, outside, the kitchen, bathroom or the furniture, which is all late 1950s era. Of course, since we don't own it and we know they ARE working on it, it is really not that big a deal. However, the real problem with old stuff is that cleaning up the house before we arrive is harder and needs to be better so it does not look dingy and dirty. Also, bugs are attracted to the windows, but we did not care as we closed them and use the A/C which was a real pleasure. However, this is the kind of thing that makes my wife unhappy.
Overall: Worth it as it is priced right. However, the real trick here is to keep the price the same once the renovation is complete and the lighting and seating is better organized with modern furniture. Then you could get 5 stars.
