Home away from Home on the South Toe River! Everything you need to enjoy the view and relax. Our home is accessible no matter what the weather. County maintained asphalt roads all the way to the driveway. Indoor Jacuzzi in the walk out basement along with a gaming table and bar all done in tasteful log cabin decor. Enjoy a movie on the big screen tv on the comfy sectional couch in the basement or have a game of cards or monopoly on the large game table. Upstairs enjoy the gas fireplace and turn the music up or watch your favorite tv show. Read a book at the outdoor table on upper deck under the umbrella as the birds eat at the feeders down below. Hummingbirds abound in the spring and you can see the trout swimming in the shallow waters in the South Toe River. Enjoy a fire down by the river at the fire pit; gather fallen branches or bring your own wood. In the summer, you can rent inner tubes and drop the kids off upstream for them to get out right at your back yard. Trout fishermen are a common sight as well as other families floating downstream. Sleep at night with your windows open and let the sounds of the river lull you off to sleep! Wake up refreshed with a great cup of tea or coffee at the kitchen table which looks right out at the South Toe River.

Dogs are considered and require a $100 non refundable fee.

No Matter what time of the year it is, the view is astoundingly peaceful!

About Robin Fowler

Live in Atlanta, have 2 adult sons, retired Army with one son commissioning into the Army in December. Love to Travel, looking forward to retirement; not quite there yet.

Robin Fowler purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Robin Fowler chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Mike went to college at Western Carolina University and his parents bought a home in the general area many years ago. We spent many years looking for just the right home and it HAD to be on the river. Mike really enjoys fly fishing and Robin just likes the serenity of being close to the water. Both of us actually grew up in South Florida so having a home in the mountains has always been a dream for us.

What makes this cabin unique

When we get there it isn't unusual for Robin to just settle in, read books and relax. We enjoy going to the square to eat and visit our favorite clothing and gift shops. For lunch, there is the Garden Deli where you can eat inside or out and it's right on the square. In the spring, summer and fall, there is a craft fair featuring all kinds of local ware right on the square. There is a quaint little ONE SCREEN old-time theater that some of our guests have gone to see whatever movie is playing and there is even live theater. Mt Mitchell Golf Course is 10 minutes up the road and Carolina Hemlocks is a state park/camp site where you can rent inner tubes and play in the river. There is also a horse ranch up the road called Clear Creek and if they aren't booked up you might be able to squeeze in a trail ride if that's up your alley. Grandfather Mountain is about 45 minutes away and has great view and places to picnic. Crabtree Falls is a campground that allows you to follow the trail down to view a very cool waterfall, just remember you have to hike back up. You can do a lot or nothing at all and still have a wonderful time.

Always check with the Yancy county Chamber of Commerce to see what's coming up!

Comfortable and Cozy, Ammenities Abound!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a splendid anniversary weekend at this lovely cabin. We were thrilled with how comfortable and well stocked it was! The hot tub is fabulous, huge and perfect for soaking. The river is right out the back door and although we didn't catch any trout, we enjoyed the view and the wildlife it attracted. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals and enjoy them at the breakfast table looking out over the river. We will be back!

Had another great stay, tubing, fishing, site seeing around Asheville and local area. This such a

peaceful, relaxing, enjoyable house I can't wait to return. So much to do we are constantly finding new and exciting places to visit. Lindville Falls, Mt Mitchell, Grandfather Mt, Asheville are all day trips. I just can't say enough about this great place.

Wonderful vacation in beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed staying in this beautiful home on the South Toe River! The photos on the website reflect an accurate picture of the rooms and views. Some of my other family members stayed in different homes on this river the same week, and so we enjoyed watching family float by in kayaks and tubes as we relaxed on the deck. It was such a treat to have breakfast on the deck & enjoy cool morning temperatures. I miss it already! My family also enjoyed hiking, kayaking, biking, & horseback riding. We will definitely plan to rent here again. Thank you, Mike & Robin.

Had a great time here

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as a family of 2 adults, 4 kids and our dog. The property was wonderful with the South Toe River right in the back yard. We had a great time playing in and exploring the river, which can easily be walked in about knee deep for as far as you would like to go.(water shoes recommended). The house was well stocked and very clean. There is tons of space in the house to spread out which our family enjoyed being able to not be all on top of each other after our ten hour trip up from Florida. We explored some of the waterfalls nearby such as upper creek and elk river falls, both less than an hour drive from the cabin. Both areas had fun and free swimming and exploring areas. We would highly recommend this property and rental experience.

Secluded, peaceful, scenic mountain retreat right on a river.

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is well stocked and comfortable with all the amenities. The Jacuzzi is wonderful. The location is private being about 15-20 minutes to Burnsville or Spruce Pine in either direction. Those are the nearest locations for food, shopping or anything else. The cabin itself is well appointed and comfortable for the most part. The only cons that dropped it from five to four stars is that the cabin was a bit dusty with cobwebs and dead insects trapped between the window panes and the screen, the sofa in the family room is ripped with the stuffing coming out and the master bedroom bed is small (Queen) and a little uncomfortable. There is also no TV in the master bedroom as an FYI. Not a big deal. The outside porch and deck were also dusty with leaves and cobwebs but all of this nothing that can't be easily fixed. The pros on the other hand are the river right outside the back door. Fishing, tubing, or just relaxing listening to the sound of the river and a variety of birds. The entire property is surrounded but thick brush and huge trees giving a lot of privacy and the air is so fresh and scented from all the flowers and plants. Just incredible. We saw hummingbirds and a variety of birds right outside the windows and otter in the river. There isn't much of a front yard or property in front of the house as it is directly on a quiet road so we didn't let our dog off leash as we had hoped but we did take him for daily walks along the road which doesn't have much traffic at all. It would have been nice if there were some wooded trails on the property but since it is on the river most trails we tried were very short and led straight down to the water. Not a huge problem as the location is very close to a national forest and a variety of state parks so we took our dog hiking with us at least three of the six days we were there. The cabin is better stocked, with more helpful items than most that we have been to. They have everything you can think of and all the comforts of home. Internet and TV worked great. Cellphone reception was spotty at best but the landline phone worked just fine. The owners Robin and Mike are very friendly, helpful and efficient. The response time was excellent and the booking process was quick and easy. All in all a wonderful experience and a pleasant stay. The kids, dog wife and I all had a great time. If eat, sleep fish, relax and get your dose of nature and fresh air is what you are looking for this place can't be beat.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay! Thank you for all of the positive points to your review. I just wanted to address some of the "cons" you mentioned. The "dusty cabin" must have referred to the cobwebs and dead insects that require hiring someone to clean the outside windows (which we are in the process of). There are no bugs on the sill when you open the windows as my housekeeper pays attention to detail. I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, the cabin is very clean, but it IS in the mountains. The Sectional in the basement does need to be fixed or replaced, but the stuffing is coming out of the arm (not the cushions you sit on) because someone tried to move it by lifting from there. It is very comfortable and will be replaced when we can get up there to shop. I'm assuming the master bed is uncomfortable because of its size (which can't be helped) as there is a foam topper on it. It is a small lot and the beauty is definitely out the back. There are many hiking trails nearby and we keep our dogs on a leash as well. Thank you for your attention to detail, I just wanted to put it into context. My housekeeper has a great propensity for detail as well.

Lots of home owned pottery galleries, churches nearby if you care to go on Sunday, day trip to Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad for little ones, waterfalls close by to hike to and a horse ranch which sometimes (when not full) will allow you to take trail rides with a guide. I found a link for bike routes, but you would need to bring your own bikes...
