About the property

Located about 2.5 hours from the city of Guayaquil, the property is located in the secure, private development of “Altos de Olón”, in the coastal town of Olón.

Olón is a small and quiet town a few minutes’ drive away from Montañita which can be accessed by driving on the acclaimed Spondylus Route (coastal highway).

Altos de Olón is part of a residential real estate development complex called Hacienda Olónche. The complex includes 5 separate developments which are mostly used as second/vacation homes. The complex also includes an ecological shopping center, a fishing lagoon, bamboo forest and horses for horseback riding. The architecture of the homes in the development boasts true elements from native materials such as straw, stone, bamboo among others.

The house is very spacious and open with the master bedroom on the second floor with a queen size bed, twin sofa bed with private terrace, fire place, bathroom with shower stall and bathtub. There are also two additional bedrooms on the first floor each with their own full bathroom with a twin bed and bunk bed in each one. A third small bedroom with bathroom and a bunk bed can accommodate two more guests. There is a large and fully equipped kitchen with all the amenities right off the dining room where a beautiful square solid teak table comfortably seats 8 people. For added convenience there is also a laundry room off of the kitchen. All three bedrooms are fitted with ceiling fans and split AC units.

The living room is equipped with satellite TV, a wet bar, ceiling fan, and a wood burning fireplace. The large terrace which is right off the living room has three hammocks and it has a perfect view of the pool area, the landscape and of course the ocean. The pool area’s gazebo includes a built-in charcoal grill and a separate wood burning oven, a sink and a half-bathroom as well as. The gazebo and pool area can easily accommodate seating or lounging for a large group of people. The pool has a separate Jacuzzi as well as a kiddie pool.

If you prefer privacy, then bring your beach chair, a book and walk or drive to the development’s private beach which is only a 5 minute walk or 2 minute ride by car or bike. However if you drive a couple of miles into the town of Olón you can enjoy the beach and also have the convenience of bathrooms and renting lounge chairs inexpensively, as well as buying seafood (fresh ceviche!), beverages, etc. Most of the restaurants are right on the beach therefore you can enjoy a ceviche in your bathing suit while listening to Latin music.

Along the town of Olón you will easily find mini-markets, drugstores and restaurants but if you want to try some of the best local gastronomy you won’t have to go far. Plaza del Valle, the shopping center of the Hacienda Olónche development, hosts an internationally renowned seafood restaurant named La Calderada which was featured by Anthony Bordain in his show “No Reservations”.

Although the house and the town of Olón can offer all the entertaining that you might want, Montañita is just a stone’s throw away. Internationally known for its beautiful beaches and perfect surf, Montañita can offer you quaint restaurants and shops during the day and a very vibrant night life after sundown. During the day you can also organize trips to go fishing, whale watching, and bird watching, among others.

The land where the house is located is almost 2,000 square meters and includes: parking area, pool, covered BBQ gazebo and social area and an extensive garden with flowers, vegetables and fruit bearing trees and plants.

Pleasant Property but lacking essentials

The property is pleasant enough. Large enough for our party of eight. quiet location, nice pool and BBQ area. Secure complex with mini mart. Around 10-15 minute walk to the beach. Good dinning area suitable for 8 and a nice living room . The main issue was lack of essential items. The kitchen was in desperate need of simple items such as a can opener, a cork screw, a coffee maker, no kettle (nothing to boil water in), new cutlery ( the existing cutlery was rusty), no toaster( we could not get the toaster oven to work). The fridge also leaked constantly so we just had to put one of our two tea cloths underneath it all the time to keep the floor dry. There was also a lack of towels, for our party of 8 we had only 7 towels, beach towels were non existent. Not much fun to be washing towels constantly when you are on vacation. Hot water was also an issue, we had hot water on day one and by the time we realized that it was a gas run heating system and the carafe was empty we had one day left of our vacation, Danny the young man who seems to be the contact said he could buy us a new one but we would have to pay as the owner had not left him any money to deal with these types of problems. It was only $3.00 but we lacked information. A guide to the running of the house with contact numbers especially in case of emergency, local info, doctors phone numbers etc (Danny did not have a contact and showed up when he could), garbage pick up days and some info on the area would have been great but was not available. Another major hitch was the owner said he would set up a tablet for us with some basic internet. He did this but the tablet did not work so we had no internet for the whole duration of our stay. Bugs and lizards were also a problem. I feel the whole house needs to be bug sprayed. We are well seasoned travelers and have traveled all over the world and are accustomed to third world living but the ants in this house were unstoppable! They ultimately ended up in our coffee, fruit bowl and anywhere a crumb might have been missed. The ants were also a problem in one of the main floor bedrooms where there also seemed to be a lizards nest possibly in the air conditioner that did not work in that one room, so lizards were abundant in the room. Fortunately our party was all Spanish speaking so we were able to problem solve, however I do feel for the non Spanish speaker the owner needs to provide more on site support and information.

Paradise!

My family has stayed at this house a few times in the past years since the house was built. We have 3 kids and we were very comfortable even thought there was another family staying with us. The house is clean and although built and decorated to look rustic it has all the modern conveniences of a city home.

The kids loved the pool and venturing out around the Community to go "exploring". The view is spectacular, I loved having coffee in the mornings before anyone was up on the hammocks that they have on the terrace. It is a very peaceful and relaxing place. The BBQ area is also very nice and you can enjoy beautiful sunsets right there without leaving the house. Montanita is only a few minutes away and has a very busy night life. During the day is nice to go there to eat and shop from the many street vendors. It's very quaint. The beach is amazing, big, clean and not at all crowded. If you go to the beach near the town of Olon or Montanita you can rent lounge Chris for cheap and buy pretty much anything to eat or drink from your lounge chair. The drive from Guayaquil is pleasant and not too long, approx 2 hours. The owner of the house David can arrange for pick up at the airport and a housekeeper during your stay. You really don't have to lift a finger! My kind of vacation!
