About Tara Merlo

Peggy Kleinert and Tara Merlo are the mother / daughter co-owners of Bailey Sands and Savannah Sands Beach Cottages. The twin beach cottages are named after Peggy's 2 grand-daughters. Tara does the booking online and peggy lives in town and helps manage them.

Tara Merlo purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Tara Merlo chose Muskegon

These cottages were built in 1930's as a collective of 5 cottages with a bathhouse in the middle...much has changed since then. What has not changed is the absolute beauty of this area...a very large, extremely clean beach with wooded areas too. One beach restaurant and ice cream shop, but otherwise quiet and spacious area. A place to decompress.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a true getaway, yet everything you may want or need is just a short drive away....

Great Lake cottage

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is very clean and well furnished. Fans, blankets, coffee pot and other small appliances and items are provided by a very thoughtful owner. View to lake is great. Walking distance to many great businesses.

The cottage was very nice & comfortable. Had everything you needed for a beach side vacation. We enjoyed the beach and the kids loved body surfing in the waves. Great location and easy to get to different attractions easily.

Perfect location but more dirty than I would like

  • 3 of 5

My family stayed at Bailey Sands for a few nights while we were in town visiting family. The location was perfect! It was so nice to have the beach only a few steps away. The owner was good to do business with. She answered emails in a timely fashion and seemed friendly.

The cottage is old (which we knew when renting). I wish it was cleaned better. A deep cleaning once a month is necessary. Light fixtures, upper shelves, top of fridge and ceiling fans should be cleaned. The shower curtain was cloth without a liner. The curtain was stained and looked quite dirty. The wall next to the toilet had what looked like urine splattered on it. (Boys!). This sort of detail to cleaning is necessary when renting a home out.

The wifi shut off half way through our stay. Thus, the TV would not work either. One might say "who cares, you're on the beach!" I would agree except for at night time when my husband has insomnia and can't sleep. He depends on TV to keep him company.

The furniture and beds are old and not comfortable. One of the rocking chairs has the seat bottom broken out and a piece of vinyl siding there for support. I know this because I'm a little chubby and heard a little 'crack' when I sat down.

The oven and stove were dirty. Luckily, I didn't need to cook while there.

Overall, it was ok. My suggestion is to upgrade a bit, keep it cleaner and provide more shower towels. You probably could charge a little more if you did these things.

Close to beach

Good place to stay near the beach. The kids loved it. Well kept and comfortable. Had everything we needed for the beach, so we didn't have to bring anything. We had a great time.

Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5

The location was perfect for us having two younger children we could walk right out to the beach every day. The cottage had everything we needed for our vacation, including chairs, toys and blankets for the beach. It was nice to have the BBQ in the back too. Was also close to spend a day at Michigan's Adventure.

Great location close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a few nights with my daughter and then the rest of the family come in later during the week. We loved the location and visited the beach nightly for the sunsets and enjoyed the fire pit. We had 3 adults and 3 children so it was a little tight, however, much time wasn't spent at the cottage as we went to MI Adventure and Grand Haven and Silver Lake and Ludington State Park for day trips. Lots of hooks in the rooms to hang things. (I always bring my own power strip as 3 kids with 3 electronic devices makes it hard to charge things, and thankful I brought one!) Parking at cottage was a little tight for two vehicles but manageable. The Deck Restaurant across the street was awesome! Communication with the owner was easy and I didn't wait long for replies. Overall the location and price and charm of this cottage was worth it and I would recommend it!
