About Michele Derwin

I have enjoyed this area since the late 70's. The beauty and the stars are magnificent year round. I love the waterfalls and out of the way swimming holes. Water here is abundant and truly a blessing - especially when so many areas do not have it. I am a musician and love to travel. I enjoy summers here with my grandson adventuring and finding new things to do.

Michele Derwin purchased this farmhouse in 1993

Why Michele Derwin chose Wells

This property boarders state on two sides and while you can walk for hours on the many trails to lovely locations, it is also quiet and peaceful. The many windows in the house make even the cold and rainy days enjoyable. The deer will romp and play out back, the wild turkey wander through and even the occasional Blue Heron and Bald Eagles make an appearance. Everyone who visits loves the house and the atmosphere.

What makes this farmhouse unique

To me - the best thing about the house is the location. Close enough many activities and sites...but out of the way enough to feel the peace and quiet of the mountains. I love sleeping here with the windows open and waking to the sound of deer walking outside or the rain falling on the roof - even the sound of snow falling. The house has lots of natural wood and sitting areas. The Screened in porch is wonderful in the summer you can bring the fold out bed down and sleep there. It is worth getting up early and walking up the trails to look back on the sunrise as it makes its way over the house.

Super comfortable beds, quiet with lots of wildlife sights, and great walking and running trails!

  • 5 of 5

In two weeks, we hiked two High Peaks plus several local trails, ate tasty local food, read our books and slept well every night.

We highly recommend staying here!! We even had a massage on our last day, so we re-enter our jobs refreshed and relaxed.

We were looking for a getaway cabin in the snow for Christmas time. This house fit the bill!

  • 5 of 5

This home was warm and cozy with the added bonus of the "deer show" every morning and evening! Snow was on the ground when we got here and snowed for two of the three days we stayed. My husband and our dogs and I got the perfect quiet getaway we were looking for. The owner was easy to contact when needed which was not at all since the house was well stocked and instructions simple. Thank you Michele and Robin!!

Do not rent if you have a dog

  • 2 of 5

The property was beautiful, the seclusion was great, the vacation overall was a good experience.

The owner was the problem. She showed up twice to "pick up things she forgot." It was not until we arrived that she indicated the dog was not allowed in certain parts of the house. We left the house exactly as we found it only to get our deposit 2 weeks late with a absurd 2 page letter about dog hair, in which she included the sheet from her lint roller!! Overall, do not rent if you have a dog and are young. She will give excuses to "drop by" - despite what these other reviews my say. There will be 4 pages of rules when you arrive (not part of the signed contract) and she will talk to you about the area for an hour. When all I wanted was to rent a house for a week with no issues and no intrusions and yet I left more stressed Thani did when I got there.

Owner's Response: Sadly, this the first "sour grapes" review that I have received. I have welcomed many pets in the past without issue. My rental agreement states that pets "must stay down stairs", and that there is a queen bedroom downstairs so owners can sleep close to their pets. Upstairs is a "clean space" so that guests with allergies are comfortable. I do leave a four page "welcome letter" on the table for guests. It provides the wifi passcode and "how to's" concerning the woodstove, televisions, location of extra pillows, blankets, trash bags etc. It then repeats the list of house rules exactly as they appear in the agreement. These guests did not leave things "as they found them". This is a housekeeping home which these guests agreed to in writing. I sent the majority of the damage deposit back to these guests within a came back undeliverable and I had to resend it - in the same envelope so they could see the initial postmark. I also explained that a number of things were left broken and included a couple of lint roller sheets with excessive dog hair from one of the two upstairs beds the dog occupied. Pet hair was found under the covers of two beds not slept in! If I was overly wordy about area hikes and things to do - the guests never said a word. I leave written area information but am often asked for additional information - which I happily provide. In regard to stopping by, I did - once - I called to ask the guests permission. I did not even go into the home - but the barn. This was a rare occurance. I do not check up on guests! This was obviously a poor fit for both host and guest. There are many places in the area to rent and I would prefer a "good fit" - instead of both parties feeling as if they have been ill treated. I take hosting very seriously! I provide high quality 100% cotton linens, fresh local eggs, in season produce, and a sampling of coffees and teas. I take pride in leaving a very clean and welcoming home. If you are reading both of these reviews, I hope you will read others as well before making a judgement or decision for you holiday. I encourage guests to ask questions before renting and after they receive my simple rental agreement. With the many choices when renting a holiday home, please research and find a fit that is good for you! Vacation time is precious. Good luck! Enjoy your Holiday! Best regards, Michele & Adirondack Mountain Getaway - Wells NY.

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

The only sounds you can hear are nature. A wonderful escape. We had daily visits from a hummingbird. Enjoyed s'mores by the campfire and walked the trails behind the property. Found the house to be cozy and delightful. The owner Michele was very thoughtful and accommodating by supplying treats of a dozen farm fresh eggs and locally grown apples. It is a nicely secluded property away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Everything inside the home was very accessible in case you forget anything. One of our favorite places to stay by far. Highly recommended!
