Short distances to the cable car to main ski areas
The non-smoking apartment (667 square feet) is situated a little outside the center of Zermatt in a very peaceful and quiet part of town next to a small stream, the Findelbach. The apartment is part of a Chalet Building with 5 apartments.
The flat has one bedroom (with a big double bed, a small desk and a big wardrobe), one living room (with two single wall beds, comfy sofa and armchair, TV and seating area), one completely renovated bathroom with bath tub and a small, but well-equipped kitchen in a separate room. The whole apartment faces south-west and there is a big balcony with deckchairs and a table from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Matterhorn.
The price does not include linens or towels, you can either bring your own, or you can pay an additional fee of 25 Euros per person for the provision of linens and towels.
The cable car to the main skiing areas (Kleinmatterhorn Bahn) is at a distance of about 5-10 minutes on foot. The center of Zermatt can be reached by bus in about 10-15 minutes, the bus stop is about 200 meters away from the apartment.
This is a privately owned apartment which is also regularly used by the owners.
The skiing domain is exceptional, culminating at 3800 m. The Alps ski area with miles of ski trails spreads between Italy and Switzerland, with a maximum vertical drop of 2300 meters, it is open all year as high mountain summer ski is always available. You can rent a complete sports equipment in local sports shops.
Hundreds of kilometers of hiking, of every difficulty level, are open in the summer, many routes are available for mountain biking. One can practice paragliding in good weather, summer and winter. Two rinks, one of which turns into tennis courts in summer, allow recreational skating or ice hockey. Several indoor pools are open all year.
Numerous summer and winter activities are described on the site: http://wwww.zermatt.ch
How to get to Zermatt:
Zermatt is a car-free resort. It can only be accessed by means of public transport or taxi / minibus.
By plane: Arrival at Zurich or Geneva, then by train (main lines depart every hour from both airports) to Zermatt.
By train: This is the easiest way to access Zermatt. From Zurich or Geneva, it takes about 3:40.
Zermatt Train Station is at the center of Zermatt, you can then take the bus or a taxi to the apartment. (about 10-15 minutes)
By car, take the motorway: Follow the A9 / E62 to Sierre, then N9/E62 and follow the signs to Zermatt before entering Visp. Leave the car in Täsch (garages) and take the shuttle train to Zermatt Täsch. You can also charter a minibus in Täsch.
Within Zermatt, you will walk, or hire an electric taxi for long distances or if you have luggage; Electric shuttle busses provide a regular service throughout the town. The shuttles are free for ski pass holders.

Lovely spot overlooking a stream and excellent location for hiking. But with some complications.
The apartment was well equipped for cooking, but no microwave or dishwasher. The listing said 'simple soaps' provided, but no soap for the shower which brings up one of the complications - the convenient store in Winkelmatten is now closed. So that meant another trip down to Zermatt just for soap. (We had already completed our shopping!). The furnishings were comfortable and lots of closets. But there are 63 steps in and out of the unit!! Connecting to the Internet was also very complicated. We had to make two visits to the Swisscom outlet (Electro Imboden) in Zermatt before it would work - the staff had to call a Swisscom hotline to connect. Last issue - could not find a hair dryer and it's often very cold to go out with wet hair in Zermatt! This was our 6th trip to Winkelmatten and we absolutely love this village!! All the hiking trails pass through the village. The bus system does work well, but on a limited schedule in summer. The washer/dryer in the building took a lot of persistence to figure out its operation - even with Google translate. One step not listed on the instructions is to pull out the settings knob to start the dryer. The owner is always responsive, but not always able to assist. Overall we had a wonderful journey, but it's now more difficult without the convenience store.
I am very sorry for these difficulties you have had.
A hair dryer is in the bathroom in the drawer under the washbasin.
Perhaps we should have a look for a microwave, but the kitchen is not that big for lots of equipment.
We hope, that the little shop will open again soon.
We stayed here a week and found we enjoyed staying slightly out from the centre of Zermatt. Winkelmatten has a secluded feel, like a small village and no distance to your first hill! We loved the apartment and were grateful for one wet day as that meant we could enjoy a "read and relaxation" day. The apartment is very nicely furnished and with all the cooking utensils one could ask for.

Perfect apartment to escape the fray.
My wife and I stayed four nights in Zermatt on our second visit. We come to walk and ride the lifts/cog trains to enjoy what we feel is some of the most magnificent scenery on earth. We were looking for an apartment where we could nest, cook, and relax away from the more touristed aspects of the busy town. We could not have been happier.
The flat backs up to the Findelbach, a stream whose sounds of rushing water fills the apartment. Tree flank the stream, and although they block the mountain, they give a feeing of isolation hard to find in crowded Zermatt. Located in Winkelmatten, we had a 20+ minute walk uphill from the train or grocery store, but a bus stop is near, and the cable car to Klein Matterhorn is just ten minutes down a steep lane.
The apartment is spotless, roomy, well equipped, and well laid out. A large balcony wraps around, and windows fill the bedroom and living area walls--opening up to trees and stream.
Next time, well stay a week.
Thank you for your detailed description of our apartment and for the amazing review!
We are happy, that you enjoyed your short stay.
The view to the mountain is only possible from November to end of may when the trees are without leaves.
Could not have been happier.
My wife and I stayed in this apartment in February/March 2011, and could not have been happier. The apartment is located in a lovely position, very peaceful and with beautiful views, yet an easy walk to the Klein Matterhorn lift (provided you leave your skis and boots locked in the facilities provided at that station – there is a modest daily charge – and walk up and down in snow boots). There is a ski bus, but it is sometimes full in the mornings, and in any event we found the walk, with the stunning views, refreshing both morning and evening.
The apartment is spacious, comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean; two particularly appealing features for us were the bath and the balcony. There is a good TV, with over 100 cable stations in a variety of languages – including Sky News. The heating is excellent and the beds (and pillows – often a disappointment elsewhere!) and the sofa/armchair were all very comfortable, and the kitchen & associated equipment top class.
There is a very good Mini Market shop nearby (their bread, especially the brown sunflower loaf, is delicious), and the 2 main supermarkets in the centre of Zermatt (easily accessible by ski bus) are extremely well stocked and surprisingly (for Zermatt!) reasonably priced.
All in all, we would give this apartment a rating of 5 out of 5, and have already booked to return next year. Our dealings with the owner Doerte were particularly pleasant, as no request for information was too much trouble, and the arrangements re collection of key, access to and departure from the apartment were exactly as advised and trouble free. Highly recommended.
Many thanks for this very friendly review!
I always feel happy knowing that our visitors feel welcome and comfortable in our apartment. my goal is the entire satisfaction of every visitor and I will do everything within my reach to fulfill this task.
Super Zeit in herrlich gemütlicher Wohnung
