The Gem is a newly renovated 3 bedroom, 3 bath vacation rental. It is situated on 4 acres, which also contains my home (a separate building, built in the 1840's), a barn, pond, stream, marshland, and woods. There is also a brand new bluestone patio with charcoal grill, fire pit, and plenty of outdoor furniture. The house comfortably sleeps 6 people, but for special short term situations, it can accommodate up to 10 people. Please note that I do charge an extra $25 per person per night, for parties over 6.
Separate bedrooms can also be rented out to smaller parties for a lower rate. Please ask, as I am flexible.
Pets are considered on a case by case basis. Please don't hesitate to inquire.
The house is situated 10 minutes drive from the village of Saugerties and HITS, and 14 and 22 miles from Hunter and Windham Mountains, respectively.
It is a 20 minute drive from Woodstock, about 30 minutes to Kingston and a 2 hour drive from NYC.
Each of the 3 bedrooms has an en suite bath, king-sized bed, flat screen TV (basic cable + HBO), DVD player, high speed WiFi internet, and air conditioning (separate thermostats). There are views of the pond, woods and Catskill Mountains from each room, including the common areas. The downstairs features a large open plan kitchen/living/dining space. Additionally, there is a large capacity LG washer and dryer in the upstairs hallway for your convenience.
My name is Thistle. I'm a freelance interior designer, landlady, and musician. I love nature, music, art, food, films, and peace. I like to travel and I like to nest. I live part time between Manhattan and Saugerties, having lived in Brooklyn for 11 years prior to purchasing this property. My own home is located adjacent to the guest house on the same property, however it is positioned in such a way that guests still enjoy their privacy.
My hosting style is relaxed and casual. I want you to have a calm and easy experience while you luxuriate in the spaces I have designed just for you.
Thistle purchased this house in 2013
Through some weekend exploration of the Hudson River Valley, I came across Woodstock and Saugerties and immediately fell in love with the area. It is truly a magical place, with so many things to do, so many unique characteristics to appreciate, and amazing people to enjoy. The property I bought is very unique, with hills, wetland, woods, old stone walls and a pond and stream. Although it is only four acres, there is much visual interest. It is quiet and peaceful, with views of the Catskills. I love it here! Be sure to take notice of all the little waterfalls that line the country roads here...they are stunning.
The main house on the property was built in the 1840's by country folk who probably raised livestock and worked at one of the local quarries. The Gem was built in the 1990's using a kit barn, and was originally used as a textile arts studio. In the spring of 2014, I renovated the art studio, turning it into a 3 bedroom, 3 bath home to be used exclusively for vacation rentals. I employed eco-friendly construction materials and methods in the renovation of this building--ask me about them! Not only is the house newly renovated, it's been done in a rustic modern style; I wanted the home to appeal to modern sensibilities--clean lines, minimalism, neutral color palettes, while using both natural and rustic themes. I am an interior designer by trade, and I serve both this area and NYC.
Pictures don't do the property justice. Beautifully and thoughtfully designed. All the conveniences we could ask for. The house was immaculate and felt brand new. Thistle is very accommodating and helpful. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others. Proximity to Woodstock and Saugerties is a huge bonus.
Everything about the home was perfect and comfortable except for the kitchen equipment. Just a few added larger cooking pans and oven pans would make a huge difference since the home is wonderful for 6 grown ups. The other area of concern is the cooktop as it needs thorough cleaning after every use (Good news is that it does clean up--Bad news is that no matter how careful one is, there is always residue on the cooktop after use). Other than this "complaint" I would give the home 5 stars as it was so well thought out in every other way and Thistle was completely responsive to any and every question. We would definitely recommend it and would stay there again!
Green, secluded but still easy access. So quiet & idyllic. The home is beautiful & comfortable.
Very clean and well kept property. Had everything we needed for a long weekend stay before we attended a wedding in the area. We stayed as a group of 6 adults and had more than enough space. The property was easy to find and conveniently located. Thistle was not around that weekend, but she was very easy to reach during our stay and was very accommodating. No delay at all in processing the return of the security deposit. The backyard was undergoing some improvements that look like they will be very nice once completed. Would recommend.
This property is very well done with beautiful bathrooms, comfortable beds, large open kitchen and good air conditioning. We stayed here with family when our daughter got married at the Kaaterskill, about 3 miles away. It worked out fine, except note that this place is very hard to find unless you have built-in guidance in your car. In addition, there is no sign for the house from the road, so there is no way to find it the first time! We brought our own coffee maker because it only comes with a French press which we don't care for! Finally, Internet was sporadic, but Thistle worked with us to get it working each time. We'd definitely stay here again.
I stayed at the property with a group of friends for a ski weekend at Hunter Mountain. The property was great, with 3 big bedrooms and a nice size living room/kitchen. Just as shown in the pictures. The location was about 14 miles to the mountain (about 25min drive). The house seemed brand new and had everything we needed. Thistle was very nice, and although she was away that weekend, she was very accommodating and responsive. Overall a great experience, I would recommend.
Saugerties is a Hudson River Valley town bordered by the Hudson River on the East and the Catskill Mountain Range on the West. There is much to do here, including hiking, historical sight seeing, antiquing, golfing, tennis, skiing, shopping, fine dining, as well as just relaxing. The area has a rich century-old tradition of providing temporary relief from city life for travelers from NYC.
The Village of Saugerties has often been described as quaint; it was the first town to appear on the National Historic Register in the early 1900's. There are many hip shops and restaurants (Lucky Chocolates, Miss Lucy's Kitchen and Love Bites are my favorite). Saugerties is home to the famed historical Saugerties Lighthouse, as well as Opus 40, a wonderful sculpture garden, and Catskill Animal Sanctuary. There is much to see and do here.
