Dave and I live in Holmen, WI where Dave is the Executive Pastor at First Free Church in Onalaska. We are both from Black River Falls but have lived throughout the US and England. My dad gave me the cabin property 38 years ago. We used the cabin as our main residence for 2 6-month stretches in the past couple years until we found a house to buy. I actually loved living there. It slows you down. Something really needed in today's world.
Peg Konkol purchased this cabin in 2007
My dad purchased the property about 50 years ago. He had a Christmas tree farm nearby and built a beautiful home that you see pictured in the cabin. We hope to keep the property in our family as we all love vacationing there because it is so private.
Privacy! Comfort and quiet with a tiny sense of roughing it as the nearest convenience store is still a 4-mile drive. The pond is this great big natural swimming pool that cools you off and is always fun to watch as you rest or eat on the front porch. The night skies, because there are no city lights or other residences nearby, are fantastic.
Our recent stay at Two Camps was a truly wonderful experience. Although we were enticed by the photos and write up on the website, we agree with some previous reviewers that the actual experience was even better. We loved the spacious accommodations, particularly the living room area, which is really hard to capture in photos. It was so relaxing to sit and read with the natural light coming in through all of the windows. We enjoyed sitting on the screened porch and spent many hours watching the hummingbirds feed and listening to the quiet. The location is ideal for anyone who enjoys a remote location, but with access to shopping and other conveniences. Peg & Dave are terrific hosts! We highly recommend Two Camps and plan to return.
Dave & Peg's "little cabin in the woods" was the perfect place to spend our summer vacation. Being "Sunbirds", we escape the AL heat and humidity and spend July through September in WI where we have family and friends. This was our first time to use VRBO and we were fortunate to find this cabin, which is only 45 min from La Crosse and gave us a quiet, relaxing place to rest our heads at the end of a busy day or just kick back and enjoy the pond and solitude of the woods.
Although it is only 950 sq ft, with the open floor plan, the cabin felt spacious and not cluttered. The cabin was clean and furnished with comfortable and adequate seating, a well-supplied kitchen and plenty of movies to watch if one so desired or cd's to play on the stereo system. The open loft provided additional sleeping as well as a desk and chair that became a perfect place for writing, reading or just napping. An added plus was the washing machine and outside clothesline, saving time and money by not having to use a laundermat. Plenty of storage and hanging space for clothes and personal items, which was all we needed to bring for our 2 month stay. Extra paper products and misc supplies were also provided.
Perhaps our favorite place would be sitting on the screened in porch looking out at the pond. Depending on the time of day, you were sure to see some visitors; a young buck, a gray heron, a mallard and the daily visit by the Kingfisher. And then there were the hummingbirds, as many as 8 sometimes, who visited the feeder under the eaves next to the porch entertaining us for hours.
The pond was perfect for when the grandchildren came to visit or on hot days when you just wanted to float on the water rafts provided with the cabin. And when evening came, the beach was a perfect place to sit and "star gaze". With no city lights, it was like sitting in an observatory.
I cannot say enough good things about this cabin or the Konkels, the perfect hosts, it truly felt like our home away from home. Thank you Dave and Peg for letting us enjoy your "little piece of heaven" up in the woods if Cataract, we hope our travels will bring us back to visit you again.
We enjoyed a quiet retreat at your cabin. It was well-stocked with everything we needed, down to muffin tins. We ate all meals in the enclosed porch--enjoying the view and temps. Our dogs loved the pond. We had a lot of fun watching them swim for hours. We also took them for walks down the road & did some hiking at Black River Falls. Thanks for the nice getaway.
We were looking for a place we could get away from everything and recharge our batteries. We lived on the screened porch most of the time. Ate breakfast, lunch and dinner out there. Had a deer checking up on us every night.Took the dogs swimming in the pond. The living room was comfortable for reading and watched a couple movies at night. Great kitchen for home cooked meals. The personal touches made us feel at home. Not a better place for a camp fire. We will definitely go back.
This cabin is so cool and Peg is a wonderful host. Whenever I tell people that we were able to honeymoon at an Amish cabin on 40 acres with a private, aerated swimming pond they are blown away and can't believe we found this gem. The cabin is far more than you'd ever expect it to be - extremely clean, updated yet still rustic, and totally private. We had a fantastic time swimming, lounging by the water, letting our dog run himself silly, and basking in the glow of a campfire at night. I'm not sure how, but we didn't get a single mosquito bite the four days that we were there which is nothing short of magic. Peg gave us directions on how to let ourselves in and was available to help by request but didn't impede our stay or privacy at all. If you have the chance to rent this cabin, do it! It has everything you would ever want, we really appreciated the microwave and coffeemaker, and is the perfect getaway for a couple or a decent sized group. Everything is sized just right.
Located on 40 acres of private land across the road from 3500 acres of state and county forest.
