About Kyle Cunningham
Aloha and welcome to the 'Hale Honu House' (The Turtle House). This unit it truly lovely with many upgrades and well appointed decorations. My husband fell in love with the view and the beautiful sunsets as well as the beautiful decor including custom 'hand' inlaid tile with fish, turtles (honu) and a beautiful colorful oval tile floor mosaic artwork with fish, coral, turtles and the ocean. It was a must buy for him due to the wonderful location and the uniqueness of the unit TOTALLY UPGRADED. We hope you come stay with us! The rental property is conveniently located for you to enjoy fantastic sunsets views. Enjoy dinner on the lanai and with the best Sunset dinning view available!
This is our second time staying at Hale Honu and we enjoyed it thoroughly once again. Even though the weather was not the best we still got to enjoy 6 out of 9 sunsets on the lanai. This condos alignment for the sunsets is perfect. We watched the sunset outrigger canoes going out and returning most nights. In the mornings we would get a breakfast sandwich and coffee from the green flash (on site in Sea Village sandwich shop) and sit on the lanai watching dolphins play and listening to the waves coming ashore. Truly relaxing. It's an excellent location to explore the whole island from. We drove N, S and east on quite a few day trips and even if we got home late there was still something open close by in town to grab a bite to eat. Great stay! Waikoloa Beach is one of the prettiest we have visited even compared to some of the caribbean beaches. And the Lava Lava beach club restaurant was excellent too.
Wonderfull All Around
This was my family's first visit to Hawaii (both the state and the island) and this place couldn't have been better. I left a pretty lengthy review but overall, this was a great rental and I would love to stay here again one day.
The patio faces not only the ocean, but the sunset as well. So gorgeous. There was an added bonus of being able to see spinner dolphins and sea turtles right outside the window, along with some birds unique to the island. I do recommend bringing your own binoculars if you have some that are easy to transport. There are some provided, but the ones we own seem to be clearer with stronger magnification.
There is direct beach access and snorkeling gear available (along with the added bonus of a beach towels, cooler and ice packs.) The beach outside of the condo is rocky so if that is not your cup of tea, there is a sandy beach an easy 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive away.
The decor in the condo is fitting of a Hawaiian rental and made for a fun environment. I agree with some other reviews that it is slightly outdated but in my opinion, it is all part of the charm. I have no complaints aside from we seemed to visit during an unusually hot and humid year according to a local so some nights it took quite a while to cool down with the fans. Thankfully the air conditioner was in the bedroom so sleeping temperature was no problem at all.
Target and Walmart were the only grocery stores we went to and neither had disposable bags available. I recommend bringing a couple reusable bags since they travel easily.
ITINERARY 4 DAY
I'm adding this little note in case anyone is looking for an equal parts busy and relaxing vacation. Times given are approximate travel times from the condo.
1 - Pu’uhonua National Park - 30 min
2 - Volcanoes National Park - 2 hr
3 - Punalu’u Black Sand Beach (Sea Turtles) - 1.5 hr
4 - Kings Shops (Farmer's Market) - 30 min
Good location and nice view
We appreciated the proximity to shops and restaurants and got to see spinner dolphins and a couple of turtles while sitting on the lanai. However, we found the finishings not so "totally updated". The patio furniture seemed of good quality and must have been recently refinished. But we had to drape the beach towels over the chairs to keep our clothing and skin from sticking to it. As well, the furniture seemed too heavy for the tile on the lanai. Several tiles were cracked outside and a couple of tiles inside seemed loose as well. The cabinets seemed old and the shelf in the base cabinet below the kitchen sink was cracked and caved in. The fridge had no handles and several broken or cracked shelves. The screen door was ill fitting (had a one inch gap at the top). Overall, we felt the condo had potential but required some attention.
An old condo that needs updating
The binoculars were worthless. The rack in dishwasher is pieces. It woulf have been nice to have chairs for the beach. The first floor is a bonus as is the ocean in front of me for five weeks.
Imagine our surprise when we opened the door to our reserved VRBO condo a few days before Christmas to find it already occupied! We lugged our belongings back through the early evening rainstorm and began making phone calls. Fortunately, we were assigned to another unit, but one that had not yet been cleaned since the prior occupant. We stripped the dirty sheets and remade the bed, removed the dirty towels from the bathroom, and noted the concerns left by the prior renters: 1/2 of the double kitchen sink plugged and no pool keys. The weather turned brighter the next day, as did our spirits. We appreciated the little cooler that was available for our use as we headed out for our snorkeling adventures. We wished there had been a BBQ, or access to one in the facility (we were told there were none).
Many extras like binoculars for whale and dolphin viewing, snorkel equipment, beach towels, boogie boards, beach gear, flashlights for Volcano National Park and much more....
2 LCD HDTVs and over 150 DVDs!
