|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
Halcyon guest cottage is centrally located, on a hill with spectacular views of Elizabeth Harbour. It is half-mile from Georgetown, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, banks, shops, straw market, boat rentals, water taxi dock. There is a beach at the foot of the hill, a minute away, and others nearby.
While it is near everything, the unit is completely private, in the detached guest wing of Halcyon, the owner's home. It comprises 1000 square feet of airy indoor/outdoor living space, fully equipped and furnished. It has its own parking area, entrance and its own private 300 sq ft covered porch where you can enjoy meals, the views and colorful surrounding garden.
Although fully air conditioned, the unit is cooled by breezes from the ocean and may be comfortable without using air conditioning. Provided are a queen-size bed, flat screen cable TV, internet, towels, beach towels, bed linens, kitchen linens, all pots, pans, dishes, eating and cooking implements, barbecue, washer and dryer.
Newly constructed in 2015 with open concept floor plan and comfortable tropical interiors, this is a perfect, secluded place to retreat after busy days in the boat, on the beach, sightseeing and water sports. Kick back with a cold Kalik, the local beer, or cook a barbecue dinner and eat on the porch. Let the gentle breezes soothe your spirit in beautiful surroundings. Your own home never felt this good!
There are chairs in the garden if all you want to do is relax in the shade with a book. There is an open upper deck if you want to laze in the sun. Without being in any way intrusive, your hostess is next door and readily available to help, explain things or tell you the history of the islands.
I was born in George Town into an old Bahamian family which has been connected with Exuma for over 200 years. I've travelled all over the world and lived in Nassau, London, and Monterey, CA, returning to design and build my dream home on our family estate in 2009. I love Bahamian history, so if you're interested, I'd be delighted to tell you about it over afternoon tea or a cool drink on my porch.
Rosemary Minns purchased this cottage in 2015
After checking out several of my favorite Bahamian islands, I decided there was no place more beautiful than Exuma, and no site more delightful or convenient than the one I already owned. Planning, building and designing interiors of houses has been my lifelong hobby and I put everything I know about homes into this one, which totally pleases me. This 215 acre property has been handed down through my father for generations, and Halcyon sits on a prime location with spectacular views of the harbor, nearby Stocking Island, and acres of green bush. Exuma is 300 miles SE from Miami, 150 miles from the Bahamas capital, Nassau; it is still undeveloped, underpopulated, and is surrounded by clear, aquamarine waters. There are breathtaking beaches just waiting for your footprints in the sand! Rent a boat and you can find reefs full of fish for snorkeling; go bonefishing, or picnic on your own little Cay. Kayaking, kite boarding, sailing, eco tours, bird watching, exploring the Exuma Cays, visiting those crazy Exuma swimming pigs - there are so many fun things for you to do. And those velvety dark Exuma nights when the sky is so crammed with bright stars? You look up and realize you're only a pinprick in eternity. There's almost no ambient light to get in the way.
While it feels remote, Exuma is regularly served by major airlines from the US, Canada and Nassau, and frequent ships bring fresh produce and materials from the States and Nassau, so most things are easily available. The pace is slow and relaxing; it might take a day to wind yourself down but that's what you came for, right? At the end of your stay you won't want to leave.
Half mile from George Town, half mile to local restaurants and an easy stroll to the beach. Swim to several coral heads offshore for interesting snorkeling.
This unit is fresh and new, built in 2015, and is completely self-contained in the guest wing, detached from the main house and surrounded by tropical landscaping, has its own parking area, private entrance, private porch and garden. There's a great feeling of peace, space and solitude - all with hilltop breezes and amazing views.
If you enjoy elegant living but like to be within walking distance of everything, this location is perfect for you.
We chose to spend our honeymoon at Halcyon & Exuma and we couldn't have picked a better place. The garden cottage is just perfect, plenty of space, light, clean and the views are amazing. We loved spending time relaxing on the outdoor porch, it's nicely sheltered and a great spot to watch the changing blues of the sea with views across to Stocking island. The gardens are beautiful, full of tropical flowers, colours and a great place to spot the tiny hummingbirds! There is a small beach just at the bottom of the hill which we had to ourselves each time we went. Rosemary was a wonderful host, she gave us a little tour of the island and helped us get our heavy shopping on our first day, very friendly and welcoming and we knew she would always be there to help us if we needed. We even had fresh baked cake which went down really well! Exuma is such a beautiful and friendly island, the sea is so clear and blue it barely seems real! We had some great local food during our stay, we would recommend a visit to the fish fry just a few minutes down the road. The house is just outside George town itself so very peaceful but was walking distance- although we seemed to be the only people walking anywhere- we kept getting offered lifts from passing traffic (as I said, very friendly people!). Make a visit to stocking island, we had a great afternoon there, chat n chill was fun. We enjoyed the wildlife, it was amazing seeing turtles swimming around! We also made a visit to the famous swimming pigs which was great trip and was great to see the cays.
Overall our trip was amazing, it was the perfect place to relax, the cottage had everything we could of needed, Rosemary is lovely and I would highly recommend a stay at Halcyon to anyone, we really hope that we can come back soon.
I can't say enough about the Garden Cottage at Halcyon. Rosemary is the best hostess you could ask for and the pride she has in her home, her island, and her guests radiate through her smiling face. The cottage is simply perfect for a couple. The location to Georgetown is ideal and just a five minute walk. The beach across the street is gorgeous at low tide and you'll be the only one there. She's already thought about everything you will need (beach towels, chairs, bug spray, etc). Worried about privacy? Don't be. You likely won't ever see her or the other guests, however, I WOULD recommend sipping on some tea and chatting with her. She has a lot to say and it will stick with you for a lifetime. Did I mention the view from the porch? Unreal.
I stayed in the sky cottage on my last trip and had just as wonderful an experience. I miss the Exumas and Rosemary already but know I will back in short time.
Our stay at the Halcyon guest cottage was absolutely wonderful. I wish I was able to give more stars because 5 isn't enough. We arrived to a stunning home, breathtaking view, and warm greeting from Rosemary.
The cottage was exactly as we expected from browsing the photos and reading the description. It was very clean and fully stocked with everything we needed for the whole trip, felt like home. She even left us some Kalik's, Bahamian beer, and Rum & Coke in the fridge. The cottage is in a great location and it's very close to the beach and to town. I would still recommend getting a rental car so that you can explore the island with ease.
The only thing better than the cottage was Rosemary, she is phenomenal and was 'over the top' accommodating. Rosemary took us on a great tour around the island, while telling us about all the hot spots and a bit of the history as well. We even went into the bush, things got a little bumpy, and she showed us many beautiful beaches. One of which was a secluded gem and it happen to be one of her favorites. After the extensive tour Rosemary invited us up for drinks and snacks on her porch where the conversation continued into the night. We parted ways with lots of information about the island, which included many activities to be done and plenty of spots to visit. We also left with some bread and honey from her very own bees!
Overall this was a fantastic trip and we'll definitely be back again. If you're reading this review, then don't waste another moment and book this cottage before it's gone. You won't regret anything about your stay at Halcyon in Exuma or having Rosemary as your host. Thank you so much Rosemary!
Halcyon Garden Apartment is awesome indeed. Rosemary, the owner, lives right next door and did everything she could to make our stay pleasant. Suggestions for beaches, restaurants, or activities? Questions about Great Exuma or Bahamian history? Needing to borrow an obscure kitchen tool? Rosemary helped!
Of course, there was very little that we needed to borrow from Rosemary, because the kitchen is well-stocked. The large windows, fans, and air conditioner kept us as cool as we wanted despite a few extremely hot and muggy days. We did laundry in the adjacent laundry room, and when it was time for a picnic we grabbed coolers, towels, beach chairs, a straw bag, and a vibrant beach umbrella from our own closet.
The unit, in my opinion, is ideally located. The view from the porch is indescribably lovely. We took in Stocking Island, Elizabeth Harbor, and Rosemary’s colorful garden in one glance. Butterflies and hummingbirds flitted or zipped past, and we saw gulls, terns, an osprey, and a pelican at a slightly greater distance. Watching a rainbow-edged squall advance on our porch was magical.
We walked (in order of increasing distance) down a short hill to a beach that has a small reef just offshore, to Georgetown for shopping (Sandpiper has lots of local art) and restaurants (Peace and Plenty has a reasonably-priced Thursday-night BBQ featuring local music), to the Georgetown Government Dock to take the water taxi to Stocking Island (including Chat ‘n Chill), to the Fish Fry (a collection of small restaurant/bar shacks), and to the calm and sparsely populated Jolly Hall Beach. In the spirit of full disclosure I must add that all but the pleasant walk down the hill are along the Queen’s Highway, the main island road that has no shoulder in some spots. Remember to walk on the right!
I would recommend renting a car so that you can visit, as we did, Little Exuma (including Tropic Breeze Restaurant and Tropic of Cancer Beach) and Rolleville (eating at Big D’s Conch Grill and swimming/wading at Coco Plum Beach). We also stopped at Bahamian Heritage sites such as the Rolle Town tombs and the statues of Pompey in Steventon. If there is no breeze, be sure to take some DEET for that sightseeing. We rented a little car from Berlie’s for $63.00 a day ($60.00 if you pay in cash) and it was fine. We went very, very slowly on the Tropic of Cancer and Coco Plum Beach access roads…they were rugged. Remember to drive on the left!
My daughter and I stayed at Halcyon in late April. Rosemary, our lovely hostess, has thought of everything and then some. Rosemary greeted us and personally drove us around and gave us a tour of Georgetown and the surrounding areas pointing out everything we might need. We were also given a phone to use during our visit full of minutes and phone numbers we might need.
The apartment is beautiful, full of light and breezes and stocked with everthing you could possibly need. The view of the turquoise waters from our expansive porch was just beautiful. The gardens and singing birds added to the peacefulness. Our trip was full of both serenity and adventure thanks to Rosemary's gentle attentiveness. Halcyon is perfection and I highly recommend this lovely home away from home! Thank you Rosemary, we look forward to another visit soon.
We traveled to Exuma to stay at Halcyon Garden for a belated honeymoon. Rosemary was immediately welcoming as well as her family members who live close by. We had a wonderful time exploring the area and there are so many intriguing places of interest to find. We also spent a day and went on a tour to see the swimming pigs, thunder ball gratto, swam with sharks and enjoyed local cuisine. Rosemary also gave us great tips and we were able to enjoy some amazing lobster poppers and fish tacos on our last day before leaving the island. We also rented a boat from Minn's Boat Rental which was a "must do" in our opinion. We were able to boat over to Stocking Island and spent some time snorkeling before getting sucked in and staying way too long at the "chat and chill." There is an abundance of sea life, the people are welcoming and warm and we would consider returning in the future. We would also suggest renting a car for a couple of days, as it is easier to explore and find out what you would like to see. Also, don't forget to try Rosemary's rum punch... can't visit Exuma without it. Thank you for a wonderful holiday. Hopefully we will meet again someday soon.
On a hill with spectacular views of the harbour, Halcyon is an elegant country house on a private estate but within walking distance of almost everything. It is off the main highway and a short walk to the town, the local food shacks, and one minute walk to the nearest beach. It is centrally located on the island and equal distance from the outlying beaches, towns and restaurants. Car rental is suggested for personal sightseeing and exploring isolated beaches, but is not necessary for daily living if you like to walk.
