About the property

Cottage, 1 studio/open area + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Welcome to our cozy, isolated cottage nestled amongst the lettuce fields of the Salinas Valley. Our cottage is located on our property 4.5 miles down River Road, just at the start of the Monterey County Wine Trail. On our half acre we have several outbuildings, our home and the owners cabinet shop. Weekends are quiet and peaceful when the shop is not operating, but during the week the cabinet shop starts up at 7 am with the noise being barely audible inside the cottage. The cottage has an open floor plan, with the 'bedroom,' living room, and kitchen connected to one another and the open sleeping loft. The cottage is located just off River Road, with a view of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range and endless produce fields. We are located 20 miles from Monterey and Pebble Beach, 7 miles to Salinas, 15 miles to Laguna Seca Raceway, and 45 miles from Santa Cruz. The agricultural setting of our property provides a unique experience of seeing where the lettuce, broccoli, or strawberries that you buy at home originated. There is little traffic, only the occasional tractor or the rare crop dusting helicopter, which only add to the experience. Enjoy the views and unbeatable hospitality during your stay, making this an ideal setting for a private and fun getaway weekend.

About Rori Jensen

We are Paul & Rori Jensen and have been married for 30+ years. When we purchased this property in 2004, our dream was realized and we were able to locate our custom cabinet shop, Jensen Co. Specialty Woodwork, right on our property. Rori also has a business, RoJenDesigns, teaching quilting and craft classes. When looking at the Google Map, the marker is in the wrong place...continue down the road , to the right, to the next house with the shop and all the out-buildings. In addition to having the shop right here, we also really enjoy entertaining and often have family and friends out to enjoy our beautiful slice of heaven. We and our two sons, two dogs, five cats and six chickens have been working really hard for the last several years to make our place into something really special. We invite you to come and share a bit of what we have done! Creative use of space, reclaimed materials and custom woodwork have all been used to make this cottage into something truly magical. Come and see!! We look forward to meeting you.

Why Rori Jensen chose Salinas

We live in a beautiful area and are close to many famous landmarks, Carmel by the sea, Laguna Seca Raceway, Big Sur, Monterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the River Road Wine Trail. By converting a detached two car garage into a charming cottage, we can increase our income in these troubling times, and give you the opportunity to share in our joy!

What makes this cottage unique

As we have mentioned already, our cottage is unique, our use of space and materials have created a wonderful and relaxing place for your weekend getaway. Many of our guests have indicated that they just don't want to leave! But, our proximity to so many truly unique locations make day trips to the Monterey Peninsula, the Big Sur coast and the wide open vistas of the Salinas Valley easily obtainable. You can relax each night in the quiet of the lettuce fields in front of a roaring fire, or enjoy the patio and the spectacular view of the Santa Lucia mountain range (really just big hills, but very beautiful anyway.)

Bathroom carries the theme of the rest of The Cottage. Custom walk in shower pan is made from an old claw foot bath tub with the side cut out. Shower surround is constructed from reclaimed redwood which creates in the shower the feeling that you are showering in an old carriage! Truly unique. The vanity is constructed from bead board that was original to our house and was torn out when we remodeled. The floor is acid washed concrete. Lots of natural light from the skylight and window. There is an elliptical trainer, in my quilting studio, which is available for your use 24/7 AQUARIUM PASSES: We also have two complimentary aquarium passes available for you to use. An $80 savings!!!

Spacious, child-friendly, well-designed, a warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The property exceeded expectations - so beautifully designed inside, cleverly incorporating lots of cupboards and shelves, as well, of course, as the sleeping accommodation at the top of the ladder. This and the trampoline and fort made this a special stay for all of the family. You've clearly put a lot of effort into this holiday home and we're grateful for the opportunity to have enjoyed it. You, Maggie, Bree and the cats made our stay very memorable. The location is remote but only a short drive from Monterey and the Interstate and it's a treat to have the views of fields and the hills/mountains, Apart from the occasional lorry whizzing past, peace and quiet, abound.

Perfect location, hosts and lodging

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I had a wonderful visit this weekend. At first the location seems very remote but it's actually not far from Monterey, Salinas and access to highways. Very friendly hosts and sweet pets as well. The house seems much larger than pictures. Feels like a great writers retreat, very reasonable pricing, comfortable furniture and beds.

Wonderful country retreat easily accessible to Monterey

  • 5 of 5

I was visiting from the Philadelphia area and stayed at the cottage with my daughter and 2 grandsons (ages 2 & 4) for 2 nights. We were warmly welcomed by Rori, Paul, and their 2 sons. The cottage is spacious, thoughtfully and creatively designed, and features skilled handcrafted cabinetry by Paul and beautiful quilts by Rori. We especially loved the clever shower design and bathroom cabinetry. The kitchen was well equipped and we were delighted to find homemade cookies and coffee which we had forgotten to pack. The beds were comfortable and my grandchildren loved having story time in the loft, which they were too young to safely use without adult supervision. Rori offered to bring the mattresses down from the loft so that the kids could "camp out" next to their mother on the queen sized Murphy bed. The 4 year old spent all of his waking time outside in the enclosed backyard jumping on the trampoline, playing with the dogs, checking in on the chickens, and exploring the fort that Rori and Paul's sons are creating. We especially appreciated access to the Monterey Aquarium passes, a savings of $130 which made it easy to enjoy the aquarium with a 2 & 4 year old in tow without worrying about getting the full experience if toddler behavior necessitated an earlier than planned exit. The cottage offers an affordable and comfortable opportunity to enjoy the many activities available in the beautiful Monterey area which is just 20 minutes away. My daughter plans to come again with her family for a weekend getaway and will recommend this wonderful cottage to the families in her Sacramento mom's group.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words and thorough review. Maggie and Bree (the dogs) always go through withdrawals when the children leave. No one to play ball with or to rub their bellies. It was a joy having you stay!

Impressive Cottage - Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We just got back a few days ago from staying in this cottage. The pictures do not do it justice. It is much larger then it appears in the pictures. When we walked in, my husband said to me that I had made the perfect choice. It was very roomy on the inside. It is out in the country. We found it quiet and peaceful. The craftsmanship on the inside makes you want to bring Paul home to your house to redo everything. Paul uses reclaimed items and turns them into new. The outcome is just beautiful and unique. Rori is quiet talented herself. We purchased a wallet from her for our daughter that she made. Paul and Rori made us feel at home. The cottage is adjacent to their back yard which we were able to use. My son loved jumping on the trampoline. We ended up staying an extra two days. We didn't really want to leave. We hope to return again in the future. It was the perfect home base while we explored the California Coast and spent a day up in San Francisco.

Rori and Paul were the best. Staying at the cottage was like a tranquil, secure little piece of heaven that was a perfect home to me while on an extended stay to the Monterey area. I highly... Highly recommend this property and this lovely family for consideration when visiting the area! Thank you Rori and Paul... from the bottom of my heart.

Awesome stay at the Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We came to Monterey for my son to propose to his girlfriend. This was an excellent choice for our little group to mingle, spend some time getting to know each other better, cook some delicious meals (okay, it was just breakfast) and relax. The Cottage is well appointed and so comfortable. The beds are comfy with choices of pillows. The couches invite you in and make you their friend. The quilts Rori makes are beautiful. The little touches are delightful. We loved all the decorations and antiques used to furnish the house. We wanted to take some of them home, but not to worry Rori, we left all of them behind. Accommodating and friendly owners, we wish we could have stayed longer. A quick and easy 25 minute drive into Monterey, it was nice to come back here after a day of tourism to relax. I would love to come back for a longer stay! Thank you Rori and Paul for your hospitality.
