Welcome to our cozy, isolated cottage nestled amongst the lettuce fields of the Salinas Valley. Our cottage is located on our property 4.5 miles down River Road, just at the start of the Monterey County Wine Trail. On our half acre we have several outbuildings, our home and the owners cabinet shop. Weekends are quiet and peaceful when the shop is not operating, but during the week the cabinet shop starts up at 7 am with the noise being barely audible inside the cottage. The cottage has an open floor plan, with the 'bedroom,' living room, and kitchen connected to one another and the open sleeping loft. The cottage is located just off River Road, with a view of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range and endless produce fields. We are located 20 miles from Monterey and Pebble Beach, 7 miles to Salinas, 15 miles to Laguna Seca Raceway, and 45 miles from Santa Cruz. The agricultural setting of our property provides a unique experience of seeing where the lettuce, broccoli, or strawberries that you buy at home originated. There is little traffic, only the occasional tractor or the rare crop dusting helicopter, which only add to the experience. Enjoy the views and unbeatable hospitality during your stay, making this an ideal setting for a private and fun getaway weekend.

We are Paul & Rori Jensen and have been married for 30+ years. When we purchased this property in 2004, our dream was realized and we were able to locate our custom cabinet shop, Jensen Co. Specialty Woodwork, right on our property. Rori also has a business, RoJenDesigns, teaching quilting and craft classes. When looking at the Google Map, the marker is in the wrong place...continue down the road , to the right, to the next house with the shop and all the out-buildings. In addition to having the shop right here, we also really enjoy entertaining and often have family and friends out to enjoy our beautiful slice of heaven. We and our two sons, two dogs, five cats and six chickens have been working really hard for the last several years to make our place into something really special. We invite you to come and share a bit of what we have done! Creative use of space, reclaimed materials and custom woodwork have all been used to make this cottage into something truly magical. Come and see!! We look forward to meeting you.
Rori Jensen purchased this cottage in 2004
We live in a beautiful area and are close to many famous landmarks, Carmel by the sea, Laguna Seca Raceway, Big Sur, Monterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the River Road Wine Trail. By converting a detached two car garage into a charming cottage, we can increase our income in these troubling times, and give you the opportunity to share in our joy!
As we have mentioned already, our cottage is unique, our use of space and materials have created a wonderful and relaxing place for your weekend getaway. Many of our guests have indicated that they just don't want to leave! But, our proximity to so many truly unique locations make day trips to the Monterey Peninsula, the Big Sur coast and the wide open vistas of the Salinas Valley easily obtainable. You can relax each night in the quiet of the lettuce fields in front of a roaring fire, or enjoy the patio and the spectacular view of the Santa Lucia mountain range (really just big hills, but very beautiful anyway.)
You will never meet nicer hosts than Rori and Paul Jensen. From the moment we stepped into this little cottage of enchantment, they made sure we felt welcomed and had everything we needed. Don't miss time with them, if you can; each is a craftsman in their own right. The cottage feels spacious and cozy at the same time, filled with Rori's beautiful quilts and wall hangings. Check the calendar, if your vacation dates aren't already taken, book it. You won't regret it.
Rori and Paul are great hosts, very friendly.
When we arrived there were delicious cookies And later we got fresh eggs. Their property is amazing And very childfriendly. Our three year old daughter had the time of her life. And what a view when your having breakfast!
This place is just delightful. I stayed here for two nights with my 14 YO son and 11 YO daughter while we explored the Monterey Bay Aquarium and downtown Monterey. It's located a short and pleasant drive from Monterey and provided a great retreat from the traffic and bustle. The loft was perfect for the kids! The Jensens have clearly put great care into this place and have managed to think of everything one might need in a home away from home. I only wish that we had more time to explore the property and check out the neat shop and craft workshop.
Myself and my family had a fantastic stay at the Jensen's wonderfully and artfully created cottage. Communication and personal attention was superb and Accommodations were clean, well maintained, everything well laid out, and very comfortable. The scenic views of farm land and mountain range were wonderful outside the window of the breakfast nook.
The Jensen's cottage proved the perfectly located quite HQ to explore the Salinas area and Monterey, Monterey Bay Aquarium scene. Rori provided wonderful and thoughtful extras like toys for our toddler, fresh baked wonderful cookies, and farm fresh eggs from their own hens. Would definitely return if back in the area and would recommend to friends.
During the planting season you might hear the rumble of tractors driving by on the rural front road in the morning but as I said to Rori its actually no different than hearing the rumble of the garbage/recycling trucks on our street and the sight of real live tractors was actually a huge attraction for my tractor and train obsessed 2 year old daughter. Many thanks to the Jensens.
If I could give more stars I would!
I want to start with LOCATION :
The country roads to get to this adorable cottage were so enjoyable, with many types of produce being grown (local food sources) on all sides of the road, it was great to see FARMING at its best, real manual labor going on in order to provide for families. I LOVED THE Location!
Next the arrival:
We were greeted by a young gentleman (son of Rori) greeted with a firm handshake and a warm welcome. He had just picked some fresh peaches and shared them with us. We had the opportunity to share the BBQ grill with them also, and shared lunch (most importantly to know that they also gave us our time alone as well, just timing was perfect to share lunch and conversation with these generous host) I knew we were in for a great stay.
Perfect, just perfect. The decor is perfect for the surroundings, country chic, with all the modern amenities.. The owners thought of all the little things, personalized soaps, organic eggs, fresh cookies. Very clean, and so cozy. Felt like home instantly. Well lit entrance, felt very safe and secure, very relaxing. Truly an opportunity to get away from city life and relax.
I was very sorry that I didn't book for more days and will be coming back for another stay next year.
Thank you for sharing your very special part of the world with me, our two might stay was the best part of our two week vacation.
This cottage is super fun and the owners have an amazing piece of property! Rori and Paul live across the yard with their dogs Maggie and Bree. We missed meeting Rori but the other three were great to meet! We had such a busy weekend planned meeting old friends, seeing whales, feeding elephants, (meeting old friends), we didn't have time to have coffee and explore the property until the day we were leaving. They have a beautiful yard with flowers and chickens in a chicken coop that we never heard once and a look out terrace that has a 280 degree view of the Salinas Valley. Some of the small touches in the home were great. The hand hammered hardware on the windows, old tub turned into an enclosed shower, the distressed cabinets and doors throughout make this a very special spot in the middle of a very special place.
The Salinas River can be seen out the back of the property. Beyond the rolling lettuce fields in the front of the property are the hills of Toro Park. The house is 1.5 miles from the Monterey Zoo. It's worth the stop by to see what Charlie Sammut and friends are doing to give some amazing creatures a comfortable, loving and thriving environment to live. Less than a mile down the street is the River Road Grill that serves up some good burgers! If you haven't been to the Aquarium, why not? If you haven't been whale watching (and you don't easily get motion sickness), this is one of the most amazing things you can do on the bay! And if you have an Aquarium membership, you get a discount. The 'must do' list of other things to do in the area are vast and accessible in a box of goodies that Paul and Rori have made for their guests. On our next trip, I'm planning a little more down time at the cottage!!
Farm tours, wine tasting on the Highlands Wine Trail, we have 2 passes available for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Laguna Seca Raceway is about 10 miles away.
