About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps up to 16)

Private oceanfront house located on Oahu's West (Waianae) Coast near Makaha Surfing Beach. Enjoy the deep-blue ocean and great sunsets from the lanai and large grass lawn. Nap to the sound of the waves. The property fronts coral reefs and is five houses to a sandy cove where green turtles come to shore and bask in the sand.

This estate consists of 2200 sq. ft of living space -- 1400 sq. ft 3BR 2BA on the second level (main house) and an additional 800 sq. ft 2BR 1.5 BA on the first level (ohana unit or in-law suite with separate entrance).

The main house is upstairs and consists of three bedrooms, two full baths, and is great for two families. Has a well stocked kitchen, living room, and is fully-furnished with 100% cotton sheets, towels, and beach towels. Comfortably sleeps up to 10. Three king size beds-one in each bedroom, two full size sofa beds with 3" memory foam toppers in the family room. We also a single futon mattress and 2 pack-n-plays. Updated in November 2016 with new living room, dining room, and family room furniture.

The ohana unit (in-law suite) downstairs consists of two bedrooms and 1.5 baths (comfortably sleeps up to 6). Full wet bar (a kitchen without a stove or oven), living room, fully-furnished with cotton sheets, towels and beach towels. One bedroom has 1 full size bed, the other bedroom has 2 full size beds. There is also a full-size pull-out couch in the living room. Great for teens and for those with limited mobility (no stairs). Includes Smart TV w/ basic cable and Amazon TV.

Please note: there is no interior access between the ohana/in-law suite and the main house. You must use the exterior stairs to go from one unit to the other. Also, as a disclaimer, I should note the ceilings between the upper floor and ground floor are thin. Not too bad for adults, but children tend to stomp, and those little footsteps can be heard clearly from downstairs.

For smaller groups, please ask about special pricing for only the main upstairs dwelling (3BR / 2 BA), sleeps up to 10 comfortably.

There is high speed internet access for your laptop/tablet/phone throughout, and cell phone reception is good.

Out of respect for my neighbors, I do not allow large functions, parties, or weddings. Only registered guests may stay at the property.

The beach cove (2 minute walk away) is one of the few places were sea turtles frequent most days, you can snorkel with them and tropical fish like Humu'humu'nuku'nuku'apua'a

Makaha is on the west coast of Oahu about 20 min past Ko-Olina and the Disney Aulani resort. The road ends five miles further up at beautiful Yokohama Beach. The west side (Waianae Coast) is a slice of local culture, a great place to go slow and enjoy the beauty. The house sits two blocks from the main road in a quiet neighborhood, with an automatic gate and lots of parking. Restaurants and shopping are three miles away in the town of Waianae (why-an-eye). It is about 45 minutes from the Honolulu Airport and an hour from Waikiki.

This is a non-smoking house, but outside and on the lanai is fine.

Great house with beautiful sunsets

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a house that was ocean-front but close enough to the beach. I got exactly what I wanted. The best way to describe the house is to list pros and cons from my stay.

- Large house which can sleep 16 comfortably if doubling up

- Ocean front view with amazing sunsets

- About 45 mins from airport and a little longer from the city center

- Ashley the caretaker was very friendly and helpful

- Well-equipped kitchen upstairs and extra kitchen (without stove/oven) downstairs. So great for cooking, serving and feeding the group

- West side of the island had near perfect weather while the other parts were under clouds and some rain. My understanding that this is often the case especially in the winter.

- The beautiful yard was well-maintained

- There is a small neighborhood beach cove where the sea turtles rest in the afternoon. Not great for swimming by the beach but better further out in the ocean.

- It's a ten to fifteen minute walk north to the closest public beach and the water temperature, color and waves were perfect for swimming

- Don't stay out there if you want to be close to the action. There isn't any nightlife and only a handful of restaurants.

- The neighborhood and the surrounding areas are what people would describe as "transitional". It didn't bother me as I have lived in many urban areas all over the world. But if you're not used to it then I can see how it can be a culture shock. The house has a secure gate with parking so I never really felt scared or worried.

- The internet went out for a day and we had difficulty fixing it.

- The decor in the kitchen, dining and family area was much nicer than the living room.

Quite and beautiful.

  • 5 of 5

This place was wonderful. It felt more like home than my house. The view of rhe turtles eating and swimming every morning was amazing. We saw dolphins swim by in a distance from the deck as well. We went down to Turtle Cove 5 houses down and saw the turtles lying on the beach. Two turtles even swam right by us in the water. The natural environment was amazing. The owner and manager was awsome. Anything we needed they helped us out. They gave us somethings we didn't have to buy for the wedding. There was enough beds for all of us. The ocean breeze coming thru the windows at night was great for sleeping and our sinuses cleared up while we were there. I would not want to stay in some fancy hotel. The security here was better. The kids played in the yard daily. The wall protected them from getting in the ocean without us knowing. I did not mind the hour drive to the statium for the swap meet. It is a very good place to get anything you want. I loved the Japanese culture here. I could go on and on. This place is good for groups and anyone that wants peace and see the beautiful island.

Great views. OK accommodations

  • 3 of 5

The backyard and deck are good. The views are fantastic!!! The unfortunate part is the house itself. It is rundown, in desperate need of new mattresses and bedding (bring your own pillows!), floor and bathroom upgrades. NO AC! Several overhead fans were not working. Yes, it is 5br, but 3 br and 2 baths are up a huge outdoor flight of stairs. The downstairs is NOT accessible any way other than outdoors. Very long drive from Honolulu and tourist attractions so plan a 1 hr drive to go anywhere. Although in sort of a "mixed" neighborhood of nicely remodeled homes and others, the neighbors are sweet as can be.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your 3 night stay in my home. I do encourage people to read my listing in full prior to booking. The house may be simple, but it is not "rundown". The house is kept clean and is well maintained. Problems are fixed promptly once reported, and linens are replaced on a regular basis with 100% cotton 400+ thread count sheets. Many believe the firm mattresses are comfy (including myself). It is unfortunate we could not fix the one ceiling fan that wasn't working while you were there. It was fixed shortly thereafter, and 2 ceiling fans are scheduled to be replaced later this month as part of our preemptive maintenance program. Your visit was during low season (September)....perhaps the weather had adverse effects on your review.

Fabulous home!!!!

  • 5 of 5

I would like to start by saying that Ashley the property manager was super nice and wonderful to deal with. Our stay at this home was more then I could have ever hoped for. We stayed with 13 adults and 5 kids including 2 toddlers under the age of 2 and had plenty of room to spare. They provided pack-n-plays and beach toys that the little ones enjoyed very much. The balcony gate locked to keep little ones from stairs, that was wonderful however: the slates around the balcony were spaced far enough apart that they could slip through so it kept us on our toes. (not a problem but would be convenient it they were closer together to ease the parents minds.) We had our wedding on the back lawn and were soooo happy with our water view. We swam everyday at Aki's cove and snorkeled, several of those swims included sea turtles (that was a bucket list item for me). It got a little too hot or us so we purchased some cheap box fans from Walmart and all was right again. LOL we just left them for the next guest in the hopes of easing the heat a little for them.

All the neighbors that we encountered were very friendly and helpful when looking for things such as fishing pole rentals and bait. We all enjoyed our stay very much and look forward to staying again. I would recommend this property to anyone looking to stay in Oahu. Its close enough to all the tourist attractions but far enough to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. enjoying the sunset from the balcony every night with a glass of wine and friends is something we will never forget. Thank you for allowing us to have a wedding to remember on your property.

Until next time

Makaha paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We had our family group of 7 adults. The space was perfect for us. The house was clean and well appointed. Ashley the caretaker was friendly, efficient and met all our needs. The lanai and garden was perfect, and we loved watching the waves crash into the rock wall in front while the turtles floated by. It was paradise with beautiful sunsets and our family getting along with eachother and happy all the time. The water toys, cooler, and beach umbrella were used all the time, thanks! It rained only on our last night of 10 and the upstairs lanai got wet, but otherwise the lanai was a fabulous place to hang out, mostly shaded by the fabric overhang. The cove nearby was good for a quick dip or snorkelling and it was amazing to see the turtles sunning themselves on the beach! Nearby shopping in Wai'anae was very convenient- everything we needed we didn't get at Costco. Makaha beach was our favourite, which was only a 3 min drive away. We did go to Pokai beach for Granny as it was calmer for swimming. Further down that beach was good snorkelling on the man made breakwater. It was a mixed neighbourhood, which we liked, and we felt safe there. There is no airconditioning, but the overhead fans and the trade winds made the house feel comfortable. Loved the trees around the house providing shade for the garden area. Very pleasant. Private, quiet place. The charcoal BBQ excellent! Quiet area, except for all the native birds in the morning (not a problem)!

We would definitely come back to this VRBO as it was really perfect for us! We loved the local vibe of the area, not touristy at all. Low key - Hawaii! Thanks Sinclaire for sharing your wonderful home in paradise with us!

Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time! We rented the entire house for a family reunion. The house was exactly how it was described. The oceanfront lot offered endless beautiful views. We spent hours relaxing on the lanai each day.

We were there in July. The house got a little warm during the day. We purchased an extra fan (and left it there), and this took care of the problem.

There were 2 beaches within walking distance. We saw lots of turtles in the ocean and on the beach.

Our overall experience was a 5!
