My wife and I are Virginia natives who started coming to SML on weekends and then purchased our Fox Lakation home as a great place to build memories and get away.
Purchased in 1998, we have remodeled and upgraded with hopes of someday retiring here. We live on a farm within one half hour away and regularly visit the lake.
Michael Fox and Betty Lou Fox purchased this house in 1998
High Point Subdivision 8 is one of the lake's best kept properties. There is no better
location to own if convenience to area attractions are important to you. By water or car, you have access to SML marinas, bars, food, worship, shopping, or outdoor activities. Our Property Owners section just completed a total remake of tennis and basketball courts. Locked but with access code, you can walk , bicycle, or drive to these grounds.
Our rental home is comfortable, spacious, and has lots of sitting areas to view the wide water views. Easy approach slope to dock. Whether you are old or young, most
vacationers want easy access to the water and dock activities. Party dock comes with upper deck for sunning, dining, or jumping. Lower left and right decks plus floater offer easy entry into the water. Wade over to our other shaded deck with steps to waters edge. Little ones can get in and experience wading with supervision.
This house had everything we needed and more. There was no detail forgotten to make renters comfortable. It is in a convenient location by both land and water. We enjoyed spending all day and evening on the big dock. We would definitely come back and recommend to friends!

The house is beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the lake. Everything was clean upon arrival and the property is really amazing. Having linens and towels provided was a real plus. The owner is really friendly and very accessible if you have any questions. Bridgewater Marina is 5 minutes by boat. We rented a boat, tube and wakeboard and had a great week on the lake. Had a wonderful meal at The Landing restaurant.
We have rented houses at SML for years and this one is our favorite. The house is older, but so well maintained that it's a non issue. The dock, easy water access and yard would make up for it even if it was a shack. We will definitely be back.
Lots of positives:
-- Location--10 minute drive to Food Lion and Bridgewater Plaza. 5 min drive to public boat ramp. 5 min boat ride to Bridgewater Plaza
-- Owner--very receptive and easy to access during our stay. We had some issues with the TV and the power went out. Mr. Fox was kind and helpful-did not seem at all bothered that we called him 3x! Takes very good care of the property.
-- House--not a luxury listing but very comfortable. Furniture and beds were in good shape and comfortable. Had a great deck on main level and a patio on ground level. It is pet friendly but doesn't look like it or smell like it.
--yard--very well kept. had lots of green space for our 2 dogs.
--dock--by far the best feature of the place. Our kids loved jumping from the 2nd story dock and we had lots of room for our boat and jet ski without taking away swimming space. The full size fridge was awesome for storing drinks and snacks at the dock. the TV was a great respite when the kids needed a break--the kids never came into the house until dinner.
Just a few suggestions:
--Cabinet space. This was the biggest drawback. The house sleeps 8 and serves 40. There was zero space to store food. I can't imagine any family needing an entire cabinet (3 full shelves) of coffee cups. And I counted 7 ladles. There is no way any family of 8 could use all that stuff. We ended up removing some larger items and storing them in the hallway so we could have a cabinet for food. I recommend pairing down and leaving a couple cabinets for the renters.
--The deck on the main level really needs a power washing as there is mildew growing on it.
--The TVs could definitely use an upgrade.
--It would be awesome if the deck on the main level was set up so the patio under it could be used while it's raining. We had quite a few rain showers and sat outside with umbrellas just because we didn't want to go inside.
These are just my family's suggestions. In no way would any of these deter us from coming back to this house but wanted to include them in the review. We had a great stay and can't wait until next year!
My family and I had a wonderful time at this charming home on the water. The location of this property is absolutely fantastic and very near to Bridgewater Plaza! The home was very clean upon arrival and everything was neat and in good working order. The two level dock was fantastic as well!!!!
We had a wonderful stay at the fox home Having the beds made and ready when we arrived was truly a blessing. While we didn't spen a lot of time at the house as we were visiting family most of the weekend. It was very relaxing to come back to and we could surely see ourself spending a summer on the lake at there wonderful home. The only small detail we would add is an iron. While most people may not need one while on vacation we all attended Mass Saturday evening and would have like to press some of things we were wearing. The setting is beautiful and would make anyone relax sitting on the porch swings. Thank you for opening your home to us.
Our family of four - two adults, two tween/teen boys and one dog - absolutely loved this house. We felt immediately at home. The house is small enough to feel cozy and encourage family togetherness, but large enough that we could spread out and have extended family visit without feeling crowded in the least. The multiple decks on the house and large dock gave us lots of room. We loved sunrises on the deck, sunsets at the boat ramp, swimming and diving off the dock, wading from the dock to the "auxiliary deck/firepit area", fishing off the dock, and having a fire in the firepit. The yard is wonderful, and the gently sloping lot was perfect. The wide water views were fantastic. The owners have thought of everything and we had all we needed while we were there. The house was clean and well maintained and the owners were extremely friendly and accomodating. We visited two nearby wineries and the Sunken City Brewery while we were here, and all of them were great. Our only comments to renters who have never been to SML: we discovered that most restaurants are CLOSED on Mondays, and if you plan to do the Virginia Dare tour - make reservations early! :) We would definitely recommend this house to anyone wanting a relaxing vacation on the lake.
We were welcomed into this vacation property as if we were friends of the family instead of vacation renters. The Foxes have provided a wonderfully comfortable lake house with all the comforts of home. They were incredibly accommodating to our family, including our family dog without whom our vacation would have been as complete. From the first day of our arrival, we walked into a sparkling clean house with ALL the beds already made (a huge extra beyond many other properties) and more than adequate supplies of bath towels neatly folded in each of the three bathrooms and just waiting for us. After dropping our bags in each of the comfortable four bedrooms-three of the four bedrooms have beautiful views of the lake)-we walked a ridiculously short distance from the house to the fantastic dock. From that moment on the dock became our main family hangout. The Foxes have created a dock setting that accommodates sunbathing, fishing, a boat should you have one or choose to rent one from one of the local marinas, family meals (with a full size refrigerator and microwave on the dock!), entertainment from a really nice TV with premium sound, quiet reading, wildlife watching, soul searching, hammock sleeping...you get the picture. From early morning until late at night, the dock (there are actually two!) was the hub of our wonderful vacation. The Foxes communicated with us throughout our stay, responding to questions about boat and fishing requirements, tips on where to find things in the house that our children might enjoy (like a card table for game playing) and the best place to find fresh vegetables and fruit. I couldn't have asked for a warmer, more gracious family to "borrow" a lake home from. We will be back - to this home - if next summer's activities allow it.
