A freshly cleaned and updated charming deep water rustic cottage, with a nice sandy beach, and a 100ft. deep water dock. So, bring your sailboat or powerboat, or simply use one of our kayaks! Sit on the dock with a cocktail as the sun disappears into the ocean directly in front of you. Located next to a lobster wharf, where you can pick up fresh Maine lobster directly from the boats!! It really doesn't get any better than this!!
My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Jeff’s cottage very much. We felt dropped down into an active real-life, working, lobsterman’s bay. We enjoyed the view of the water and the gentle rumble of boats coming and going. I loved the smell of the ocean and the sounds of the seagulls. We enjoyed some of the freshest lobster possible from “our” neighbors! We kayaked all over the place!
The cottage is rustic but very quaint and adequate! We used the fireplace every morning and evening. We walked the pier out over the water a couple times every day. We used the big pot available to cook the lobsters. The only drawback is the heated well-water smells strongly of sulfur as mentioned in another review so although unpleasant, we were not surprised. The affordable price to be in this beautiful spot was worth it to us! We would love to come back! In fact, we dreamed of moving to Maine!
When we first arrived- it was very cold. This cottage is not insulated, and the heat had not been turned on- and there was not any firewood for the fireplace. So we had to build a small fire with just paper to knock off the chill. However, after that night- we bought some firewood- and it was perfect. The cottage is small, and cozy- but the view is worth a million dollars! The water in the bathroom- sink and shower- smelled of sulfur, so it took a little while to get used to, but it was not horrible. The neighbors had a dog- an Irish setter, who we fell in love with!! I would go back in a heart beat! Just make sure to buy firewood before going to cabin for night if it is chilly! I would love to buy the place. I could live there year round!!
We came to Maine with Charlie, our dog, to go hiking and geocaching for the long weekend. The New England coast use to be covered with these rustic summer cottages, and they are so few remaining for those of us who remember vacation rentals as simple cabins without cable TV, temperpedic mattresses and granite counter tops. It is well stocked with kitchen stuff, nice linens, plenty of towels and blankets... Jeff dropped off firewood and turned the lights on for our arrival and we picked up fried clams at the take-out fish shack on the way in since we got there too late to shop. (So good!). The hot water does smell like sulfur, but I didn't mind since hard water leaves skin and hair really soft. Charlie made lots of dog friends from the neighborhood, one showing up to play in the yard with a fish hanging out of his mouth. The TV seemed to work fine, but the only thing we wanted to watch was the Pats game, which was not covered by the DISH service. It didn't matter to us, we sat by the fireplace listening to in on the radio while logging in all the geocaches we got that day (14). And the Pat's won. This was a very quiet peninsula compared to touristy ones like Boothbay, there are no crowed streets lined with shops and restaurant. But if you like quiet, nature, great views of boats and sunsets from the long pier, the sounds of the harbor and seagulls, and friendly neighbors who will sell you lobster caught that day, this spot is quiet and beautiful. This place is, in our opinion, perfect just the way it is.
This house is perfect if you just want to relax and listen to the seagulls. Comfortable furniture, clean all around, everything working but the television, great neighbors, all the apples, pears and plums you could ever want right off the trees. Cottage is absolutely as advertised
Friendship, Maine is what is says in the name...a quiet little town with awesome neighbors who help you get lobster right off the boat. The yard out front is wonderful and the view is great. We did have numerous issues that would cause us to not book this property again and suggest others to be weary. The first issue was booking this place with a queen sized bed that is listed. After the lackluster review before me, I contacted the owner to confirm. He stated it was "either a full or a queen." When we arrived, it was indeed a full (and horrible mattress). We ended up sleeping separately on the twin sized beds on our vacation. Major issue #2 was that we confirmed multiple times that there would be kayaks available for use. We have a tandem kayak of our own we could have brought, but was assured there would be kayaks (plural). When we arrived we saw one kayak on the lawn and to the left multiple kayaks with a sign that said they belonged to the dock. We confirmed with the dock that they were indeed not ours and we were unable to kayak together unless we rented another one. So much for paying for an amenity that was listed yet not there. While I understand the cottage is next to the ocean and runs on well water, the water in the shower smelled of so much sulfur that it engulfed the home when turned on. We tried running the water to see if it would go away and it never did. We felt dirty taking a shower and could not even enjoy a nice warm shower on vacation. The television listed goes in and out, and multiple lights were not in working order. Beware if you have children, because the front of the home on the interior is all exposed nails. We have stayed in little homey cottages and a little dust, exposed wire or not the best of mattresses would have been fine for the cost. However, the deep lying about what would be at the cottage made the stay less than desirable for us. Finally, to top this all off, good luck trying to get in touch with the property owner. Took us 3 e-mail requests, multiple phone calls to a number with a full mailbox and a case number with VRBO to finally get our check in information the week of the trip. The property is currently for sale and they must just not want to put any money or effort into it while we are paying to rent it.
Very nice neighborhood and awesome neighbors. Cottage does not meet safety codes. Outdated wiring, old electrical wiring, no smoke alarms near bedrooms, fire extinguishers last tested in 2001. Owner is deceitful. No queen size bed, gas grill has no propane and there were no kayaks. Cottage was cleaned, however we needed to use the pull out couch for an extra bed and it had not been cleaned after the winter...covered in mice droppings. The owner is very lax about getting in touch with.
