This house is fantastic! Even more beautiful than the pictures. We loved our stay here and we will definetely come back.
Our family of six spent a long Labor Day weekend at the house, enjoying the pool and the peace and quiet and exploring the surrounding area. The house was spacious, clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for hassle-free relaxation. We highly recommend and look forward to going back!
Beautifully maintained home, spotlessly clean and immaculately stocked. The attention to detail is really amazing. The owner is a real pleasure to deal with, always accommodating and helpful. We had a great few days lounging round the well kept pool and patio. We hope to return to the Blue Jay sometime!
This was a beautiful house for us to do a quick weekend away from NYC. The pool and BBQ were great features that let us relax and enjoy ourselves.
Taina was extremely helpful throughout the whole process as this was the first time I rented a house. They had a cute little binder which helped provide clear directions for how to get around the house and also included some fun trips and recommendations for what to do nearby.
Overall the property was very clean and well-maintained and I would definitely recommend this house for someone who is looking to get away.
BlueJay was the perfect summer vacation spot. The property feels completely secluded, yet is close enough to Ghent to pop into town for groceries and supplies. The house and grounds are immaculately maintained and the owners have stocked everything you might need—from a fully equipped kitchen to yard and pool games. The photos don't do the property justice! The house is large, with plenty of room to spread out if you want some space to read or watch TV. We practically lived on the back patio, where there is an amazing grill (both propane and charcoal), plenty of excellent furniture and umbrellas to keep out of the hot sun. The pool is wonderful. Great wildlife, too, as we saw deer, wild turkeys, a guinea hen and plenty of rabbits. We enjoyed the nightly light show, when the trees are lit up with fireflies. The bikes, like everything else, are in terrific shape for a ride. Wireless was never spotty, for the occasions we did have to work, and the owners texted a couple of times to make sure all was well. Great house. Great owners. Great Vacation. Thanks, Taina!!
The Blue Jay provided an ideal place for my children and thier cousins to swim, play board games and watch a few movies together while the adults relaxed. It was roomy, clean and comfortable, as well as close to all shopping in Chatham, Ghent, Greenport and Hudson. We all had a very nice time, and the owner was very helpful throughout our stay.
Nestled on 6 acres, partly wooded, and set among the rolling hills in bucolic Columbia County east of the Hudson River, the "Blue Jay" is only 2 hours from the George Washington Bridge. Only three minutes away from the world-renowned OMI International Arts Center sculpture fields, the "Blue Jay" offers a relaxing retreat in a rural setting but only a 10-mile drive to artsy Hudson (AMTRAK stop), with fine dining, antique shops and premiere art galleries.
Guests have plenty to do throughout the four seasons, from swimming, hiking and boating in the summer to skiing at nearby Catamount (25 miles), Jiminy Peak (30 miles) and Ski Butternut (30 miles). OMI also offers free cross-country skiing during the snowy months on their 300 acres of rolling farmland and inspiring art.
Great touring of wineries and distilleries in Hudson, Ghent and surrounding hamlets. The quaint town of Chatham, a few miles away, offers charming storefronts and family restaurants. A short 7-mile drive will bring you to Valatie, with its two waterfalls and family-owned antique shops framing the former Dutch village.
We usually cook meals at home where the dining room table seats 12 comfortably or barbecue in the summer by the pool. For meals outside of home, Hudson and Philmont are renowned for their gourmet restaurants and celebrated chefs, so the selection is high if you enjoy fine dining. There is a plethora of meal choices, for everyone from the consummate foodie to the lover of organic burgers and everything in between.
ACTIVITIES: Families can enjoy the children's arts programs at OMI, swimming, boating & hiking at Lake Taghkanic State Park (20 miles) and numerous other local hikes maintained by the Columbia Land Conservancy offering trails for all levels. Or just play in our large yard for hours of fun!
MEDITATION: For guests who enjoy meditation and yoga, the Won Dharma Meditation Center (11 miles) and Kripalu Center for Yoga and Meditation (35 miles) are perfect spots for zen relaxation and yoga practice.
PERFECT FOR COLLEGE VISITS: Do you have a college-bound high schooler? The "Blue Jay" is a convenient base for visits to top colleges of the Northeast. In 40, 60, 90, 120 minutes, respectively, you can visit Amherst, Bard, Hampshire, Marist, Mount Holyoke, Skidmore, Siena, Smith, Union, Vassar, Williams, in addition to SUNY Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Massachusetts/Amherst, and be back in time for a nice evening in a spacious home.
We have a number of lawn games (in the summer) and board games for a great time together at "The Blue Jay."
