About Julie Beer

We are a family that has hospitality in our blood. I was raised in a family resort setting in Northern Minnesota and fully understand and desire to give a great guest expierinece here in Custer. We fell in love with South Dakota and the Black Hills 8 years ago while on a family road trip. We had stayed on this property and the rest, as they say is history.

Julie Beer purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Julie Beer chose Custer

We love the convenience that Custer has to offer. We originally vacationed in more remote settings but really loved the proximity to all the must see/must do's the Hills has to offer. On a short stay this location makes more of them possible....oh, and the ability to get items that we forgot at the store etc..

Great location

  • 4 of 5

could not have asked for a better location. So close to everything we wanted to see while on vacation. Gas station, super market, pizza place... all within blocks. Having 2 bathrooms worked out great for our small family.

exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

Some of the prior reviews said this home was tiny so I was expecting a cramped, but nice space. I was pleasantly surprised - I would not categorize it as tiny at all. It had plenty of room for two couples and was warm, cozy and had all the comforts of home! Perfect location for spending days in different areas of the hills, we were able to eat meals at the house using the provided pans, utensils, etc... and walk into Custer to enjoy restaurants for meals out. The parking was perfect - we had two trucks, a motorcycle and a motorcycle trailer so I was a bit nervous about the parking as the house was in town. There was ample parking and we still had space to eat at the outside table. The home owners were so nice and very easy to work with - they responded quickly to my few texted questions and we just can't say enough about our wonderful stay. We would stay here again for sure.

Great stay but there are some negatives

  • 3 of 5

Overall, our stay was very nice. Here are the pros and cons:

Great location. You can walk to nearby restaurants in Custer.

Very clean house.

Well stocked pantry (oil, spices, even condiments in the refrigerator)

Beds were comfortable.

Laundry detergent and dryer sheets were provided.

Nice propane gas grill.

Very small living room. The TV felt too big for the space.

No space in kitchen cabinets for groceries.

Bedrooms were also very small.

Water pressure in showers not so great.

Shower would not get hot...just warm water.

Owner's Response: We are glad you had a very nice stay in our clean cottage and new comfortable beds...that is super important to us. The location too is awesome so thank you for that, it is close to all the big sites and to the local downtown flavor and quaint mountain town experience as well. We do advertise the space as a cottage and the price reflects that. We also have every room pictured as we try very hard to represent everything as it actually is, big tv and all. We did not notice any water pressure issues and if the new hot water heater was lower than your desired temp a simple call could have cured that for you. You may have noticed we are responsive to the needs of our guests. Thanks for coming and for your feedback!

Stay in Custer

  • 5 of 5

Custer was the perfect location to stay in. Very centrally located. The home was very clean and had all the amenities as advertised. I would highly recommend the Skogen Café - worth every penny!

It's tiny but a great place to wind down and relax after a full day of visiting South Dakota.

  • 4 of 5

Owner was very friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay that's close to lots of attractions this is a great place. Only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is it's tiny for 5 folks and it doesn't have a decent view to enjoy in evenings.

Perfect for weekend stay! Close to All!

  • 5 of 5

Walked in and absolutely loved it! As pictured too! Loved having the patio out front for drinks and coffee.. loved the brightness of it all.. and loved that we could walk to town (One block off main street). Quiet peaceful neighborhood too. Fully stocked kitchen and the beds were very comfortable. Def recommend this to families or couples. Will keep in my favorites for hopefully future visits. Thanks Winston Cottage! Oh and Julie was always quick with replies to any inquiries. Spent the Memorial Weekend in the Black Hills.
