About Jean or Kim
A retired Fortune 50 executive, now cattle farmer and visiting professor. I've done more than my fair share of travel, and continue to do so, but more than the places I visited, it's the people I've met that remain in my memories. Staying in everything from a turret room in an olive oil processing mill to an ultra modern Paris flat to a rustic sand floor hut on the beach, each door I opened came with an individual behind it, not a desk clerk ... not that I haven't been greeted by hotel employees that did everything they could to make me feel welcome and a valued guest. It's the personal touch of each property I've rented that made the difference of staying at place to really visiting it and taking home a part of it in my heart. The local insight my hosts shared with me ... their favorite shops, restaurants, and haunts ... allowed me to see their community through native eyes. This is what I seek to offer my guests ... a warm welcome to my community, not just a house. With luck, a visitor today is tomorrow's neighbor. These days you're more likely to find me on my farm near Tappahannock where I breed and raise 100% grass fed Miniature Herefords and Aberdeen Angus cattle. No worries though. My Guests are my primary focus, so when you are at UpYonda know I or my caretaker are available to you 24/7 to answer questions or assist in anyway you may need. Come! Explore my Virginia. Like me, you may never want to leave.
Jean or Kim purchased this House in 2015
Why Jean or Kim chose Reedville
From the time the lot was first seen by water by the couple that constructed UpYonda to the day I was given its keys, I have been a part of the property's history. And, when the couple no longer used the house for its intended purpose, I snapped it up without hesitation. UpYonda and it's furnishings, fixtures, and ammenities are what designers might call "curated" eccentricity. In other words, stylish comfort, always changing to reflect guest wants and needs. Constants include items that will always offer a welcoming, warm and relaxing home away from home for all whom we are honored to welcome as guests. UpYonda is, truly, a glimpse of life on the Chesapeake.

Great house on the river
Great place to stay. Easy check in and very clean. House has kayaks, a canoe and bikes for plenty of activities for the kids. Our teens had a great time in the river.
We feel honored UpYonda was your family's choice for your daughter's celebratory birthday weekend. Glad to learn a great
time was had by all. Returning Guests always receive an Apreciation Rate Discount when booking privately, so come on back, soon.
Had a great stay at Upyonder over Labor Day weekend. Great location, was able to dock both our boats and kids could swim right off the dock. Jean gave us so much information before our stay about the are. Looking forward to our next stay 😊
Wonderful to know you had fun at UpYonda and that the dock was put to such great use. Looking forward to welcoming you and your family when next you head to the Northern Neck.
The cabin, located in a wooded neighborhood on the water, is remote and beautiful. I loved walking around the neighborhood every morning – so peaceful. We brought our boat and tied it up at the dock. We had easy access to the Chesapeake Bay following the directions provided by the host. The cabin is clean, spacious, and beautifully furnished. We had more than we needed as far as furnishings and amenities go. The kitchen was nice, and the grill worked great! The host is very friendly and provided thorough responses to my questions. She also had good suggestions on things to do in the area. We really enjoyed our stay!
I smile whenever you've referred to our vacation rental as a "cabin".
In many ways, it IS a cabin ... open, cozy, inviting, wood trimmed ..., but your reference as such is a first. I cannot help but wonder if this year's exterior painting of the house, and the color choices we made, make it more "woods" than "water" ... 😁
No matter how our Guests perceive the house ... cabin, cottage, or other ... it's the experiences they have enjoyed that matter.
Thank you for sharing yours.
Wonderful vacation days
We had great time kayaking, canoeing, playing games and relaxing! Would totally recommend this vacation home.
Perfect Place to Get Away from it All
I can't express how truly perfect this place is. It is totally removed from "society"... in a good way. After dealing with a loss in our family the week prior it helped us start the healing process. The sunsets on the water were breath taking. We felt our loved one with us constantly. The place had everything and anything you could want in a vacation home. Jean went above and beyond. We plan on returning!
This house was amazing! Most rentals leave you always longing for more, but not this one! When we walked in the pictures absolutely did not do the house justice, this house was much better than any of us girls expected! From the view, to The Kayaks, to the hot tub, and even the amazing fire pit! All of it was thoroughly enjoyed! If you are looking for a place to get away with a group of friends, this is it! We cannot wait to book our stay for next year and enjoy the relaxation along the river that this house offers!
Thank you for your generous review. You were AMAZING guests and I look forward to welcoming you, back, to UpYonda at anytime. Remember, Summer is not the only time of the year to enjoy the outdoors along the Chesapeake. Late Spring (mid-April, on), and the Fall, through mid-November can be awesome ... and, our rental rates are reduced to both reflect the "shoulder seasons" and to make it very affordable to take multiple, quick weekend getaways. See you, soon.
Virginia offers something for everyone. From touring its battlefields to enjoying a day on the water, you will find yourself within an hour's radius of everything you could wish for while on vacation at the Northern Neck's UpYonda.
Paddle our kayaks or canoe and tour the river and its many inlets. Head to the beaches just minutes away, one via the Sunnybank Ferry, the last of Virginia's car ferries and it's free. Be sure to bring your camera for those memories and a picnic lunch to enjoy. Alternatively, there's plenty of room to dock your own boat, with Smith Point Marina launch facilities close by.
Fish for your supper off the dock or, with the appropriate licensing the river or bay. Drop our crab pots into the water to see what you'll be able to offer your family and friends later in the day. Oysters can be as inexoensive as 100 for $30.00.
Soak away your aches and pains in the hot tub, complete with view of the river, or enjoy the privacy of the jetted tub in the master suite. Alternatively, hit the local beaches or plan a day, south at Virginia Beach ... miles, upon miles of white sand and surf.
History buffs will appreciate the many Revolutionary and Civil War sites, or walk in the footsteps of some of Virginia's most famous politians as you wander the streets and shops of Williamsburg ... don't miss the town's nightly "Ghost Tour" or book a ticket to a "Witch Trial." Both are sure to put a chill in your timber. Be sure to monitor the many re-enactments that are planned throughout the season for those who truly want to step back in time.
Take the ferry to Tangier Island across the open Chesapeake Bay and discover Virginia's sinking island. Isolated for many years, this island is famous for its crabbing, beaches, period houses, and quaint non-vehicular traffic patterns. Sit a spell on the docks, enjoy a scrumptious crabcake sandwich for lunch, and just try to translate the local dialect. If you do, you'll be let in on all the island goings on and gossip.
Wine Tours. You could, if you wanted to do so, spend your entire time with us touring and tasting the delights of the many wineries in the immediate and extended region. If you are staying Friday evening, Kilmarnock's wine shop hosts FREE tastings 5 to 7pm. Knowledgeable owners. Never any pressure. More a gathering and sharing.
Shop the outlets in Williamsburg, the many thrift and consignment shops, or attend an auction to find treasures old and new, large and small to take home. Shipping services available.
Did you know virginia has an Oyster Trail? Why not visit Oyster farmer Tommy Leggett and learn how oysters are cultivated in Virginia? You will have a chance to get out onto the water and "farming" beds, and if you want, get into the water to help harvest. Get to taste some of the fruit's of your labor, too. Book your tour online through Virginia Oyster Trail.
Or, grab a bag of fresh oysters or a bushel of crabs, start a fire in the firepit and spend the evening picking your supper while enjoying that wine or beer you scooped up at the very well stocked wine shop in Kilmarnock ... free Friday evening tastings.
Speaking of "scooping up" ... don't miss the ice cream shops in nearby Burgess and in Reedville ... at the end of the road near the docks ... or the "trolley" shop in Kilmarnock. Seasonal hours.
Grab one of our bicycles and catch a glimpse of the local byways as you head towards Ophelia's hidden gem ... a two vehicle cable ferry (free) that crosses the river (M-F, Sat 'til noon), taking you into Reedville. Just one of the many quaint and unusual secrets that you won't find just anywhere.
A licensed massage therapist is available to come to the home upon request ... mylasource.com ... as is a reliable babysitter should you require these services. Availability subject to prior appointments.
