Lots of tranquility and open space very close to New York City.
We went to the New Dawn with a few friends for a quiet weekend getaway from NYC. It was easy to get to on the Metro-Northfrom Grand Central Station to New Rochelle, plus 5 min. taxi ride. We brought our own food and had a wonderful quiet dinner with our friends on the back patio. On Saturday my wife attended one of their Saturday programs while I worked on my laptop, looking out at the water through the lovely leaded glass windows. The evening was rainy and the mist off the water was moody and calming. It was so incredibly beautiful to watch the changing light on the water, and the moon rising, and during the day, sailboats and kayaks passing by. The downstairs furnishings were grand, and the old-fashioned lights at night lent a wonderful old-world atmosphere. I think the most pleasant part was having brought with us everything we needed so that we did not have to deal with cars, grocery stores, restaurants, or any other people. It was restful and replenishing. On Sunday afternoon we called a taxi and got to the train station in less than 10 mins. It was an easy trip that felt great.
We stayed here to celebrate my daughter's 60th birthday. It was a great location for family members from the East Coast to gather and the property was stunning and spacious -- we loved feeling so relaxed and at peace. We had a low-key BBQ picnic. Weather was picture perfect blue skies and sweet breeze off the water all weekend. There were plenty of pots & pans, cleaning supplies, etc. Spent one whole day laying around in the lounge chairs reading and watching boats & kayaks pass by. Each tree had it's own unique view of the islands and water. Did not feel the need to go anywhere. We ate dinner at the Marina Grille one night which is also on the water, and food was good. Some friends came up from the city by train and that was easy. We hope to come back for a bigger reunion because it felt so magical and there was plenty of space.
My friend and I were going to a healing ceremony at the New Dawn Foundation and decided to take advantage of their special offer for people attending one of their events. We spent the weekend in the Sunrise Room on the third floor. It was very cozy feeling with the beds tucked in between slanted roof ceilings and old-fashioned bathtub. Reminded me of my grandmother's house. Plenty of hot water in that big tub. We had a balcony that faced both East and West. We could see the sun rise and set without having to leave the third floor. The morning sunrises were just stunning, and hearing the sea gulls and other birds cry out over the water was just fantastic. On Sat. morning I just watched the sunrise from the balcony and went back to bed. On Sun. it was so gorgeous I went downstairs and walked along the sea wall. We live in the City and took the Metro North train, and then a quick taxi. We brought our own food since we didn't have a car. It turns out we were the only overnight guests so we had the place to ourselves on Sunday. It was great to get away from City Noise and everything else. You would never think of New Rochelle as a getaway destination but this old estate house on the Sound was amazing. Also loved the views from the Sunroom, and all the rooms.
