“$200 fee! Overzealous parking enforcement! Scam!

  • 1 of 5

$200 tow fee!!!! Terrible customer service... no hospitality!!!! Unapologetic, unsympathethic, shady scam to take advantage of tourists!

Our car was towed by the Grande Caribbean condo association because the parking tag wasn't filled out correctly. We hung the tag that was left for us as soon as we arrived, which was already filled out by our rental company, itrip. The condo association and the itrip supervisor first blamed each other, then blamed me for putting it in the car without completing it properly despite having no instructions to do so.

The day we were towed, we found a warning on the car that the tag info was wrong, but we rented close to the beach so we wouldn't need to drive and hadn't been to our car in a day. The note said nothing about the timeline for being towed, or even that we would be towed. We corrected the other tag that was on the counter and were literally walking to the car to hang it when the tow truck was pulling off with our car. We stopped him, but he refused to unhook the car. This was on our last night, and we were told we couldn't get the car back until the next day after 8:30am. We had to cancel our last day plans to get the car because we had to be out of the rental by 10am.

I took a taxi to a fenced in grass lot across town behind some commercial businesses where I handed $200 (cash only) to a woman that met me there to retrieve my car. The process took about 2 hours and felt very shady and like a trap to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists.

There were many scenarios that could have avoided this situation, but none of them seemed to be on the radar of itrip or the condo association. It was obvious we were guests at the condos, and a traveling family (car seats for the little ones!!!). The rental unit number (407) and itrip were clearly written on the tag. The security guard admitted that she knew this, but had us towed anyway. Both the security guard that had us towed and the condo association president that I spoke with made reference to their dislike of itrip, and it felt like we were caught in the middle of a power play between them. Unfortunately, we had to pay the cost for their battle.

After we returned home, I called the the itrip supervisor again to discuss what happened. She told me that it was my fault the car was towed and hung up on me. At no point did anyone in the process apologize, except the lady from the towing company because she saw that we had a parking tag hanging in the car window.

Owner's Response: We appreciate all feedback but as clearly outlined in our check in instructions, this association is very strict about parking passes being filled out correctly. In fact, this is in red in our check in instructions: "Some units require parking passes. If, upon your arrival, there are passes left on the counter, you must complete these correctly and place in your vehicle! This will prevent you from receiving a citation or having the vehicle towed." We did speak with this guest after her car was towed and she felt that we should pay the fee for her not following directions. When we pointed out what her check in instructions said, which she admitted to reading, she said that wasn't explained well enough and we should have done more to prevent her from being towed.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Grande Caribbean 407 for a bachelor party trip. We had 9 grown adult men and had more than enough room for everyone to sleep comfortably, shower, and dine. Vaulted ceilings and a lofted upstairs sleep area make the condo feel very spacious. Easy beach access to a section of the beach that provides public restrooms and next to a lifeguard stand. Walking distance to Rite Aid next door and a 2 minute drive to Publix. Flora-Bama shuttle picks up from Grande Caribbean for just $5 a person. 10/10 would stay at this condo again.

Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

Nice place, I read the reviews before I booked this place, seemed the review were about the same. The place is nice, definitely could use some work/ updates ( broken tile, wallpaper peeling), the couch definitely needs replaced! The floors were dirty, my children's feet were black, yes we could have called the cleaning service, but didn't want to waste time dealing with that as well as having sand at all times on the floor from coming in and out of the beach, I just swept every morning and night, not a big deal! There is not a lot of great light in the place especially upstairs, if you have little ones ( I brought the light from one of the rooms downstairs, upstairs and that was suitable) the spare bedroom does not have cable only a DVD so if you have someone staying in that room bring DVDs or the can watch in living room. The wifi there is terrible, so that could be a good thing or a bad thing! I will have to say that the Grand Caribbean is located in a great place right across from the beach with great views and is generally located from grocery stores, gas stations, and food! The street that is in front of the place can be a very busy street, I suggest you drive across the street, you do not have to pay for parking and there are plenty of spots available. All in all the place was a great place for the price and location, we will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your recent stay! I am happy to report some new furniture has been purchased and we are working to have cable added to the spare bedroom. No one has ever mentioned poor lighting upstairs that is something we will have evaluated. We are at the time in our season when the units are in need of a good deep cleaning that will greatly help with the floor issues. Thankfully that did not interrupt your stay. Unfortunately the wifi on the island is not always efficient and it is not something that can be guaranteed. The unit is certainly located by some of the local favorites. We value your input and appreciate your feedback!
