The cottage is cozy and has everything you would need.

The cottage has a spacious bathroom with a washer and dryer, a wonderful tiled, walk in shower. A door from the bathroom leads to your private hot tub for 2ppl. open all year, facing the woods.

The kitchen is rustic and modern with everything you need to prepare a wonderful meal. Radiant heated floors for the colder months, a commercial gas stove, granite counter top and a built in banquette with a french door leading out to the patio and BBQ area. The chicken coop can be seen from the kitchen and you can watch our wonderful chickens as they emerge when the automatic door opens from the coop to their enclosed area.

The living room has plank wood floors and a wonderful cozy, twin sized window seat with a reading light and a view of the woods. This can also be used as a twin size bed. There is a desk, and plenty of seating options .

For those of you who would prefer not to climb a ladder , there is a sofa that pulls out to a queen size bed, new and very comfortable. The loft does not enable you to stand up.

For those staying at the cottage in the spring, summer or fall, there is a delightful screened in porch to relax and read a good book.

Your own private lake front awaits after you take a quick stroll down a path through the woods and walk down a staircase to the dock and pergola area. 2 kayaks are attached to the dock for your use. There are life jackets and a couple of floats. A perfect place to spend an afternoon swimming or kayaking or an evening with a glass of wine, watching the sunset on the lounge chairs.

If you'd like to venture out, the small villages of Tivoli, Red Hook , Rhinebeck and Hudson are all 10 - 25 minutes away. They all have great choices for restaurants, shops, antique stores and more. The historical mansions along the Hudson River - Clermont, Montgomery Place, Olana, Mills Mansion ,Wilderstein all offer wonderful walking paths , gardens and views of the Hudson River. Most offer tours of the mansions.

A little further away in Millbrook is Deanna's personal favorite, along with Olana, has really wonderful gardens at Innisfree. The spring and summer are perfect for viewing the gardens.

Poets Walk and Ferncliff Fire Tower are great walks nearby.

About Bruce or Deanna Gardom

Deanna and I came from the West Coast in 1999 and thought we would be here in the Hudson Valley a year or 2 and go back. It didn't happen. We fell in love with the area and all it has to offer. The lake is a special place. Bruce came from a background of Hotel Management and Deanna's family had a Bed and Breakfast in Napa Valley. She has been a flight attendant for many years and with both of our backgrounds, having vacation rentals is a good fit for us, enabling us to share our love of the Hudson Valley. We travel quite a bit and try to offer all of the amenities in our vacation rental that we enjoy having when we travel. We started the Painted Turtle Cottage in 2002 and just recently started our second vacation rental, Goose Landing Lake Cottage. Hope you enjoy it, as it is a magical place.

Bruce or Deanna Gardom purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Bruce or Deanna Gardom chose Hudson Valley

The cottage is down a private road on the back side of a spring fed lake, filled with trout, turtles and Canadian geese flying over it. Swim or kayak in the lake from your own private dock. The cottage is nestled back in the woods with your own private hot tub. A great place to get away, see wildlife such as deer, turkey, Canadian geese, an occasional fox. Best for a couple or a single person. Our property is in a wonderful location in the Hudson Valley, situated on a beautiful spring fed lake with 160 ft of private lake front.

Valley and enables you to experience so many different things. Restaurants, Historic Mansions, charming villages, antiquing, gardens, and more. It is only 2 hours from New York City and an hour flight from Albany Airport if you are coming from out of state.

What makes this cottage unique

The lake is small and inviting. Floating on the lake, kayaking in the spring and seeing baby turtles swim by is magical. There are no motor boats allowed, so you can enjoy nature at its finest. You will see a large variety of birds as we provide bird feeders. The lake area is a quiet, peaceful environment. The cottage is on the back side of the lake, down a private road with a few small cottages. Most times, our guests will be the only ones enjoying the lake.

Red Hook is a wonderful area to explore and has great restaurants in Red Hook and surrounding villages along with historical mansions to explore along the Hudson River. We do provide a list of things to do and see around the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My friends and I just experienced the most delightful and relaxing weekend getaway! The house is immaculately clean with a kitchen that is fully equipped for delicious meal-making. The living room and kitchen area are perfect gathering places for social time together and the bedrooms screened in porch and beautiful sitting areas in the gardens are perfect for quiet time. Relaxing in the Hot Tub after a refreshing swim in the lake was my favorite. We loved every minute and are already trying to plan our return visit!

Bruce and Deanna are wonderful hosts and extremely accommodating. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet retreat and time with your favorite people.

Small but homey! Perfect place for romance

  • 4 of 5

Didn't expect the property to be that small. But the decor made it seemed bigger than it really was. Every little square feet inside was decorated with class and comfort. Definitely will be returning.

*Bruce scared us when he came out of nowhere to show us in, but we were thankful he did! (we checked in at 10:30PM and it was pitch dark outside). I will list the Pros and Cons below.

State of the Art appliances.- I was blown away by the high-end stove, fridge,washer/dryer...even the toaster!

Organic Products- I love that Bruce and Deanna went green on all their products. Good job!

Shower- OMG the shower was amazing, it was like stepping into a spa

Home decor- Stunning home decor, every little spot within the cottage had a story to tell.

Hospitality- Bruce and Deanna made sure our stay was enjoyable, gave us 2 bottles of wine, set up the table before our arrival and helped us park our car.

Small interior- This place is perfect for a couple or 3 people. It was 4 of us and we were there always on each other's face. I was with my god-brother and his wife so the "closeness" didn't affect me too much. But if is two not so close couples, it may be a problem.

Hot Tub- The property has a 2 person hot tub. Only 2 people can be in it at a time, so that was a bummer. One of the main reasons I chose this place was for the hot tub, and to find out is a small hot tub when we got there it was disappointing. We still made it work though.

Relaxing and wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights and we had an excellent and relaxing getaway. The cottage was clean, the beds are extremely comfortable and the AC worked great which is very welcome in the summer heat. I loved sitting on the patio with the chickens and chipmunks running around and many different types of birds happily feeding themselves from the bird feeder. I saw deer and fawns twice! As others have said , it is a short walk to the private dock (make sure to look out for the sign with Goose Landing Lake path) I loved having my morning coffee out there and we enjoyed the use of the kayaks to explore the lake.

Red Hook and Rhinebeck are close enough and offer great restaurants to dine at.

We appreciated all of the extra touches ... area recommendations, eggs, milk, juice, coffee, pancake mix, organic chocolate, the use of natural products (hand soap, shower gel etc) and leaving the AC on to welcome us as we arrived on a hot day.

Would love to return.

Perfect in nearly every way

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely incredible stay at the cottage. First impression was that the cottage looked exactly like the pictures we saw on the site. The whole place was very clean, had enough of everything we needed (linens, blankets, towels, etc.). Beds and couch were quite comfy.

The walk to the lake was easy (less than 90 seconds, really) and the private dock was great to watch the sunset on. Kayaking, swimming and just floating on the raft were our favorite things to do all day. The lake was very clean and quiet, and the few people that we did cross paths with were friendly.

We picked up groceries in town (<15 minute drive) and cooked all of our meals in the cottage. We had everything we needed to make the meals. However, be sure you bring enough butter/oil (was tough to clean the non-non-stick pans at times)!

Time of year was great - never too hot and we got to watch some rain from inside. It never got too warm in the cottage (but the porch got a little toasty without a breeze). Set up with internet (WiFi) and satellite TV which all worked very well.

We didn't do much else in the town besides grabbing groceries because we didn't want to leave the cottage/lake! Would highly recommend the whole experience.

Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect setting for our family getaway. My husband and I wanted to take the kids away for a long weekend. Our criteria included ; comfortable accommodations, walking distance to a lake, close proximity to good hiking and bike trails and be within a 20 minute drive of a town that offered good restaurants and fun shops to explore for some down time.

The cottage exceeded our expectations. We were pleasantly surprised when it looked even more appealing in person than the photos on VRBO. It was recently renovated and we found the décor to be warm and inviting as well as very comfortable. The cottage itself was absolutely spotless.

The equipment provided with the cottage rental made the trip that much easier for us. The kayaks were great fun on the lake and the adult bikes provided were perfect for our outings. The pergola was furnished with lounge chairs so we could relax by the water and read a good book.

We highly recommend this cottage rental and our family is looking forward to our next visit.
