|Minimum Stay||3 - 6 nights|
Hamragil is a big cottage, sleeping up to 12 guests in 6 bedrooms with 6 double beds, 4 queen size and 2 junior size. Please notice, there's an extra charge per person per night exceeding 6 guests.
For the best and fastest email- and other computer and TV transmission the lodge has a fiber glass cable connection.
The location is a selected one, up in the hillside with a great view on the whole valley, the river below and the mountains facing you. Here you are the Queen and the King! Hamragil offers lots of privacy, being though only 25 km away from the town Akureyri and 50 km from the nature's Paradise Lake Myvatn. Access to geothermal water gives you the possibility to gaze at the northern lights in the winter time, while sitting in the hot pot outside, with the vivid mountain creek flowing by in the gully below.
This unique cottage Hamragil was built in the years 1990 - 1992 by four families living in town Akureyri, all being sisters and brothers. It was constructed to accommodate all the couples and the parents of the siplings.
By that time I happened to be working at the same company as one of the owners (by the MOT -car inspection). Since the Icelandic tourism became my fate shortly after Hamragil was built and I ended up as a tourism entrepreneur and tour guide, I got this property rented several times on my small group tours. It easily accommodated 10+ people, and offered a nice kitchen and great living room for convivial moments.
Now 15 - 20 years later, as time goes by, there was time for these families to sell. Knowing about my affection for this house and its location, they offered me to buy -and, as it fits perfectly in my concept of www.nordiclodges.com, I just said like the Nobel-ed Bob Dylan: Don't think twice, it's all right!
Jon Baldur purchased this lodge in 2015
Location, location, location -and a superb craftmanship.
Combination of total privacy and a good access to everything you need: Services, cultural events and nature gems. Far enough but yet so close.
Central located close to Akureyri. Perfect for day trips to the great attractions of North Iceland . Great hot top to relax after a day of exploring. Awesome views. Well stocked with dishes for bigger groups. Out for the way but still centrally located. Feels like home away from home.
John was extreme helpful and answered all questions we had in the fastest possible way (and we had a lot).
Definitely will stay here again
Hamragil provided a perfect base to explore the coast of Northern Iceland. Scenery? Spectacular. Space in the lodge-like setting: Just right. The living room offered views of glacier-covered mountains. The kitchen is well-appointed. Access (key etc.) was easy. We looked forward each day to returning to the solitude of Hamragil, an easy 15- or 20-minute drive from Akureyri. And don't miss the creek that runs along the property, just beyond the birch grove.
As for the basics: The description is indeed accurate. The house was clean. Jon couldn't have been more helpful in making sure we found the house, the key and everything we needed. I'd recommend this to friends, family, colleagues: Anyone who wants a quiet, cheerful and spacious holiday home. Attractions: Lake Myvatyn, of course, and all the waterfalls. But also the scenery right there surrounding Hamragil.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Hamragil. The view is spectacular.
The bedrooms were comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked. The hot pot was a nice relaxing end to the day. We made all our dinners there and enjoyed the lovely view as we ate. Jon was helpful as we had not brought all the directions we needed and he was quick to respond with all the information when we contacted him on his cell phone. The second bathroom was not completed yet and we did fine with the one bathroom. It is about 15-20 mins from town. We got our food from the local grocery store and that worked out well. Easy trip to go whale watching. Overall, it was a great experience and great location.
From the cottage Hamragil, in the rural area of valley Fnjoskadalur, you can easily hike to the historical arch bridge across the river Fnjoska, to the second biggest (birch)wood in the country.
The town Akureyri -also the the second biggest in Iceland- only 20 minutes away, has (almost) all services needed, plus activities, like golfing, sailing, diving, skiing, apart from cultural events. To the north-east you have the picturesque waterfall Godafoss, and the whale watching town Husavik only 45 minutes away. And the unique area around the lake Myvatn, covered with nature sights, is only 40 min to the east. NB!: in the wintertime the ring road can become closed for a while due to snow storms, and the 400 m long home run for Lodge Hamragil can become inaccessible because of snow, even for 4x4 vehicles. Contact the 4x4 rental isak.is for to rent a vehicle to get there during winter.
