Owls Head Island sits on a bluff that overlooks a serene cove that opens up into the Atlantic Ocean. With three floors of glass, roof top skylights, four decks and stairs down to the water front - there is no better location to experience the true Nova Scotian sea shore. Built as a year round home with all of the modern amenities, the house can accommodate up to 10 people. With its three floors of living, the house has been designed to accommodate an intimate week-end for a couple, a small family - as well as a gathering of 10.
A 3 minute walk takes you to a small private beach while 15 minutes in a car can get you to three of Nova Scotia's most prized beaches. . Halifax (a city of 400,000) is 50 minutes by car, and Lunenburg (a great seaside town) is a 4o minute drive. Fishing, whale watching, and golf, are located within a 15 minute drive, as are all the necessary shops for groceries, hardware, gift shops , liquor store, and a Saturday Farmer's market.
An additional house is located across the road on the other shoreline facing the open house. This is a fully operational home with all of the amenities and is listed on HomeAway as the Sail Loft. Both houses can be rented together for larger groups. Please contact us to discuss the arrangements.
My late husband and I built this house as a family retreat. With 5 children we needed a great deal of space! We spent 16 years experiencing memorable and beautiful times together. Due to its proximity to our house in the city (Halifax) we were able to slip down for week-ends as well as for extended Christmas and summer holidays.
In 2008, with the death of my husband, my life forever changed. Our children continued to vacation with me; however, they all ended up leaving Nova Scotia to pursue their lives and careers in Western Canada. (Although my younger son was married on the property with 120 guests!). My own life has taken me to Portugal. While walking the Camino de Santiago through Portugal, I discovered a ruin on a farm, that I have turned into a hostel and cafe for pilgrims making their walk along the "way". This has caused me to open up Owls Head to other families to share and create the wonderful memories that we as a family so much enjoyed.
Lesley E Southwick Trask purchased this house in 1992
Owls Head Island is a magical place. It holds amazing energy that is so difficult to explain - but is felt the moment you walk on. We had looked for an oceanfront property for three years, going down every nook and cranny imaginable. As we were dropping off our eldest daughter at a friend's house, we were told that a property was privately on sale on the island. As we approached the forest where the house is now located, we felt an incredible energy - as if we had finally found our "home". Within 48 hours we owned this beautiful part of Nova Scotia and have never looked back.
We built the house floor by floor - walking the space to imagine where every window should be placed. We saw each vista as its own "canvas". We even created a window that we could see the opening of the cove into the Atlantic Ocean lying in bed. We found ourselves mesmerized by the fishing boats that would pull up every morning and evening to tend their lobster traps. Life on a island is a true treasure.
Owls Head Retreat offers the best of all worlds. While located on a relatively isolated island, the location offers a quiet and serene environment, its proximity (45 minutes) to Halifax (Nova Scotia's largest city) quests can also enjoy all of the attractions, amenities and shopping of a major city.
Halifax boasts an amazing night life as well as renowned theatre. The historic nature of the city showcases fabulous museums, world class dining - and even ghost tours.
The property is 15 minutes from four of Nova Scotia's best and world famous beaches - Hubbards, Queensland, Bayswater, and Cleveland Beach Provincial Park.
10 minutes away is Freewheeling, a company that specializes in cycle tours, as well as sailing excursions, and kayaking.
The fishing is amazing. A local marina (750 metres from the house) and safe cove mooring provides docking of sail and motor boats.
The Lighthouse Route, on which the property is located hosts some of the best antique and craft shops. Lunenburg, the birthplace of the Bluenose and one of Nova Scotia's most beautiful seaports is 30 minutes by car, and Chester, a world renowned sailing haven is 20 minutes away.
Hubbards offers a Saturday Farmer's Market to which people come from all over the county.
Northwest Cove ( located minute from the property) is the shooting location of two TV series - Haven and the Trailer Park Boys.
