I grew up in San Juan but spent all of my Summers, X-mas breaks, Easter vacations, and holiday weekends living in Culebra with my grandparents and family. Joined the USNavy for 5 years at the age of 19. I graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and after 12 years of living in the US mainland returned to PR. I have three beautiful children.
Tulio Ortiz purchased this cottage in 1886
My family has lived in Culebra since 1886. Back then, Culebra was pretty much developed as an agricultural project by the Spanish Crown. My great great grandfather came over from Spain and became owner of some land, bought some more, and the rest is history. Sardinera beach II (Melones we call it!) has been owned and loved by my family and friends forever. Come share it with us for a while!
From the moment you disembark or fly into the island you will fall in love with it. It's hard to describe but, if you ask anyone that has been to Culebra and they will tell you. The moment you get off the main road into the access road you will feel transported into a different world. Pass the tunnel of acacia trees and at the end you will see the yellow house sitting in the sunshine. A nice open area downstairs filled with brightly colored hammocks invites you in! But what really catches you eye and ears is the view and the sound of the ocean right in front of you. Lots of trees run along the beachfront. They provide a nice shade for when the Caribbean sun gets a little too frisky. Pass the trees and on the edge of the water, you'll see the island of Vieques in the distance. The small waves that run along the top of the reef in front of the house come towards you to die at your feet! If it's late in the afternoon you can just have a seat on the sand and enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever see! Make sure you have a 'sundowner' in hand. Want to eat out? Town is just a 8 min walk away. Want to snorkel in the Biological Reserve? Walk 20 steps into the water,
swim to the right, and you are there! Want to go to world famous Flamenco beach, Soni beach, Tamarindo, Carlos Rosario? Take the public transport or better yet, rent a golf cart or 4x4 and go exploring. Want to go to Tortuga beach in the island of Culebrita, or Luis Peña? Want to go diving? We'll arranged it for you! Come on down and enjoy!
We had the best time at Tulio's house and could not overstate how gracious he was to our family of 4. We kayaked and snorkeled every single day at the end of December. The water was fantastic! The sweetest, clearest, calmest water was right around the corner from his house and that was my favorite area. Perfect for a baby! Go 10 more feet across the parking lot and snorkel to your hearts content. We really could have stayed in that little area the whole week and would have been content. We had cheap water shoes but decently priced snorkel gear and we were set the whole week. Definitely bring beach towels. A golf cart worked just fine for my husband, myself and our two teenage daughters. We went EVERYWHERE on the Island and make it up and down every hill on that little go-getter. Our favorite beach for snorkeling was Tamarindo. Our favorite pretty water beach was Brava Beach which included a hike to get there. Zacos Tacos was our favorite eat spot. Beds were all very comfortable and linens were very clean. My youngest daughter and I were on the stairs daily hoping for 4G on our phones but my husband and oldest could have cared less. We would all gladly go back and stay at Tulio's house again even without our precious internet. It was a perfect week.
This is the perfect beach front house. If you dont mind cooking and enjoying the company you came with. You can snorkle right at the beach. Lots of iguanas to watch and hermit crabs crawl around, so watch your step. I feel very relaxed after spending 5 nights here. I hesitated writing this because I dont want this secret perfect place to get to popular. You can also drive or walk to the closest big beach. Beautiful, just beautiful beach cabin.
We just spent an amazing week at Tulio's yellow house on the beach in Culebra. Having been to Culebra 17+ years ago, it was wonderful to return and to find this home to stay in. We so enjoyed afternoons in the hammock after great days at the beach, watching chickens, huge iguanas and all sizes of hermit crabs, and having the chance to snorkel right outside our door.
The bedrooms are very comfortable and running the AC units at night make it nice and cool. The downstairs is open to the elements and makes it part of the adventure. We had breakfast burritos every morning and then packed up lunch for amazing beach days. Tulio was very helpful in telling us where to go and not given the many people coming to the island for Easter weekend.
I highly recommend this house and visiting Culebra -- both very special places!
We throughly enjoyed our stay. This property is exactly what it says it is. It was a perfect location from town and had everything we needed. It was perfect for the snorkeling we came for. We could snorkel right off the beach located in front of the home as well as down the street at Melones beach. We didn't need to go anywhere nor on any excursion. I would highly recommend this property and wouldn't hesitate to go back again if I return to Culebra. The property owner was very kind and easy to work with.
An awesome home with an island feel, offered by a truly knowledgeable, caring, and helpful host! Tulio made every effort to assist us, as our trip was impacted by New England winter storms.
The Yellow House on Culebra is an inviting, comfortable, clean retreat in a perfect location. It is walking distance to town and some of best snorkeling on the island. We thoroughly enjoyed the open kitchen, centered in the outdoor patio area. The comfortable assortment of seating areas, hammocks, swinging chairs, wrap around porches upstairs and down offered a pleasant change of scenery depending on our mood. After our day’s adventures, we always looked forward returning to this private hide-away, with our own ocean front, to sit on the beach as evening settled in.
Following Tulio’s recommendations and local knowledge, we ventured to areas and beaches that were secluded and breathtaking. Loved the Crusty Crab and watching the sunset over the islands beyond. Having the access to his kayaks was wonderful, allowing us to leave car travel behind and paddle to spectacular snorkeling and flats for fishing.
We are looking forward to returning.
My husband and I just returned from 8 idyllic nights at Melones Yellow House. I can't say enough about the house or its location. The house is just as pictured and has everything you need for a relaxing vacation. We loved the indoor/outdoor living and made good use of the hammocks. There is great snorkeling right in front of the house and nearby at Melones Beach, a short walk or golf cart ride away. The house is close to town and restaurants (10 minute walk or short ride), about a 7 min. golf cart ride to the airport, and less than 15 min. (by golf cart) to Flamenco Beach. Our favorite snorkeling beach was Melones, we also made two trips to Tamarindo and saw several turtles. Flamenco is gorgeous, I recommend going during the week if possible when it is less crowded. The owner, Tulio, was very helpful and always responded quickly to texts. He met us at the airport and led us to the house after a quick tour of the town and stop at Melones Beach. He also helped us find a captain to take us to Culebrita (Gilin) and that is a trip I would also recommend. Culebra is a beautiful, clean, safe island with several uncrowded, pristine beaches. We will definitely return and when we do, we will stay at the yellow house again!
